Post subject: R-type 3 (with detached Force)

I tried to record r-type 3 with only one shot (to get Force) and without attaching Force... Everything went well and was quite funny... until that second red wall on second level >___< Is there any way to break through it without charged shot?.. Those who have played R-type 3 should know what am I talking about.. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1169/Rtype_force.smv the problem is that fragile point is on the other side of wall... Is there any glitch to drop Force there? (all 5 settings in snes movie options were turned off when recording)

yea i think some stuff need a charged shot or a lot of shots to break...

zefirs, I think there are cases where you have to utilize the charged shot. Your run is very interesting. it's much more interesting than simply trying kill every enemy on the screen. It's interesting to watch how you avoided all the enemy and try to utilize the "force" to kill the enemies. I enjoy it a lot. Please continue and finish the run. Thanks!

Hey, I got the same idea a couple of years ago, when I was playing "Crying/Bio Hazard" on Genesis. It has a similar feature, and I think it's possible to beat it without a single shot. Anyway, very nice movie you have there. Waiting for more. :)

There is a category for that: Pacifist. You are allowed to kill bosses if it is absolutely necessary to continue, for example.

In R-Type final every boss can be passed by timeout. May be there are similar feature in R-Type 3 but watching 4 minutes of evading boss attack would be very boring...

I think that has been a stock feature since R-Type. Not sure how long the timeout was.

I've become interested in creating a TAS run of this game, seeing as how it has yet to be covered here on Tasvideos. Would anyone else be interested in contributing to this? R-type3 might be somewhat slow paced, which could defeat the purpose of a tas run of it, but seeing as how you can pull of ridiculous stunts that no sane player bent on surviving would pull, it holds a lot of potential to be good. edit: video deleted, no point leaving up.

Actually, I stopped watching it shortly after you stalled on the right side of the screen without doing anything. Seriously, TASing autoscrolling games does not really mean "do what a normal human can't because they're limited", it's more like "do what no human would ever think of doing". adelikat's Gradius run shows it really well. As far as I know R-Type series, they don't allow for such freedom in movement (and movement is, by far, the main aspect of TASing an autoscroller), and thus isn't really suited for a TAS. Anyone can stand in place after they figure out where that place is, you don't need superhuman precision for something like that. If you still want to TAS an autoscroller, I suggest first improving the autoscrollers already existing on the site, mainly Warp's Gradius 3 100% kill rate run. And also, don't post WIPs on YouTube. YouTube sucks for so many reasons. Use Microstorage to upload your SMVs, then post the links here.

I don't think this would be a bad run, though it seems kinda slow. The mode 7 graphics and music seem to do quite well in the game, however, which may make it entertaining regardless. I'm going to agree with Moozooh and request that you not just find a spot and sit there. I'm sure you can find something to do (kill as many enemies as possible? all of them? I've never played this game, so I don't know how versatile and capable the spaceship is). I'm also going to agree and say that Microstorage is the way to go when uploading WIPs, but I disagree with not using YouTube at all. ROMs are insanely difficult to find (or I just suck at it and there's some crazy treasure trove of ROMs out there and I'm just not in on the secret), and spyware infested ROM sites scare me, so finding some game I haven't heard much about sounds daunting. Sure, the quality suffers when you upload to YouTube, but if you hadn't used YouTube, I would never have been able to watch the WIP and comment on it. If you have the time, I say use Microstorage primarily, and YouTube if you have the time / patience.

Blunt is good, but not if it makes you out to be a jerk. You've already made me regret even taking the time start out this. I thank you, seriously. But I'll take the advice and use Microstorage and just upload .smvs instead. I use the NTSC [U] rom. As cool as Gradius is, I'm far more interested in R-Type.

Heh roms are very easy to find.. so long as you know the right places. Yeah watching the video again, I agree that standing in one place is a poor for entertainment value, but that video was just me screwing around learning how to use snes9x.. so yeah.

I have been waiting a long time for someone to TAS R-Type. More specifically, Super R-Type. Would you consider working on it? If you'd like, I could give you some ideas how to avoid lag and making it entertaining. Edit: Sorry if I sounded rude when I suggested I can possibly help you make it entertaining. Because perhaps it indicates that you are unable to make a entertaining run, which, of course I did not meant.

I haven't played much super r-type. I'll play through it a few times before anything else. I didn't take it the wrong way or anything. The first run we try is never perfect, and can usually be improved upon in so many ways.

I also feel Super R-Type is better for a TAS because the game has less upgrades than R-Type III, therefore encouraging more creative ways to entertain.

SDA doesn't accept shoot-em-up runs since most shmups are auto-scrolling and the only way you can affect the speed are the bosses.(someone asked on the SDA forums if they could run R-Type III just yesterday)Try http://super-play.co.uk/. I've been giving some thought to doing a run of R-Type III after watching the published run of Super R-Type. I would play through the first loop to access the Advanced Mission, then start the TAS from there. For the Force Device, I would probably use the Cyclone Force, since it can be used as a battering ram to deal heavy damage. The Standard Force is already seen in the Super R-Type run, and while I like the Shadow Force too, I prefer the Cyclone Force. Typically with the Cyclone Force, I use the Splash Laser (blue) but I can see the Through Laser (red) and Capsule Laser (yellow) having a lot of use for TAS purposes. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have done a (mediocre) pacifista run with the standard force on youtube 2 years ago. The cyclone force would be some variety. I'll welcome it.

Here's the first two stages for my verification run. Hyperlinked to avoid page-breaking. I picked the Cyclone Force and did some experimentation with the weapons, but I think I'll try to switch to the Through Laser before bosses, as (I believe) it has the most striking power.

You should try to find the boss HP in memory to verify that. With other Forces I'd agree with your assessment, but for the Cyclone Force I wouldn't be surprised if Capsule Laser, or just battering the boss with the force while firing hyper shots, would be stronger.

I have no experience with memory searching, so let me see if I'm thinking this through right. 1. Eliminate other variables, like the ships' position. 2. Search for values. 3. Damage the boss. 4. Update the search for values that have decreased. Is that about right?
