I'm forking off the generic "Sonic games" thread... Here's a WIP of the first level of Sonic the Hedgehog for SMS. Don't know if anyone else is running this game. Posting mostly to see if my ROM is "cool", also to show off the fact that SMS Sonic games can be just as absurd as the genesis versions ;) Thanks to pcc for showing me the memory tool in dega, and thanks to DeHackEd for letting me post on microstorage.

The ROM works for me. One question, at 573 there is a hill... would it be faster to spin down the hill, or would that wreck the massive hill spin at 933?

Very good work you two. I liked how you went off the screen. This game seem to have big potential to get broken like Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

I watched the WIPs and agree with AngerFist - this game has the potential to be over-the-top broken entertaining like some of the other Sonic games. :-)

Awesome. Thanks for the encouragement all. ermacone's movie inspired me to further optimization with this result, still 18 seconds in game but about 58 frames faster till the first fade out. The greatest enemy as in many games is lag :P not sure how to encode an avi, but if i can figure it out i'll try to upload one at some point.

Nice improvement to your previous WIP. I may be able to encode it (just need to put mencoder on this computer).

A new question that kind of relates to my other post. When the screen is behind sonic, i notice sonic never spins down any other hills... would it be impossible to spin down any other of the hills due to limitations? (say, a boundry/screenwrap) Also, would it make you finish the level any faster if you did spin down those hills? i think i have a spinning hill fetish :3 but to be honest, that is the only thing i noticed XD everything else looked really, really good!

I believe he is actually constantly spinning after the big hill -- he reaches about 5 times normal running speed according to memory watch (by comparison, speed shoes give you twice, and at the bottom of the big hill it's about 1.5) ... but the camera seems to have a limit as to how fast it catches up so it doesn't matter too much :P looking at the rest of the game, this will be one of the few times this sort of speed is possible -- i've read about glitching into walls on one level so maybe it can be done elsewhere. Thanks for watching, keep up the good comments! :)

Ah... can't say i am 1337 at reading memory watchers (hell, they look like numbers to me), so when i didnt hear the spinning sound again, i jumped ot conclusions ;) i look forward to more wips, work faster man! XD

Well done! I'll try to beat in the 00:17 when a have time..... In the 2º stage is possible to use the great jump on the hill, but it spend a lot of time. If someone dyscover how to jump more higer, please, send the tip for me. [16 frames holding is the necessary(actualy, 15 frames are possible)]. []s Ermacone

Thanks! One question; is anybody going to try an all-Chaos-Emeralds run?

I'm not try it, because some Emeralds need spend a lot of time. The same thing for the all-special stages.

I'd love to see an "Aims for Highest Score" superplay video rather than a TAS. Just as long as there is no abuse used to keep playing forever getting more and more points.

The WIPs for the Sonic games here achieve absurdly high scores for their absurdly fast times. I suspect it would be nigh impossible to match the scores from pure speed through more (less?) conventional means.

Have someone making a hexedit specific for .mmv? I don't like to use the conventional tools for this work. I don't want to continue my run without correct some imperfections in the first stage (beat the aldens run in 00:17 :p), and finish the first boos fight in the left side of the screen.

Second zone... Also shaved off a couple more frames on the first zone. ermacone, I will be very impressed if you can do it in 17 seconds! I want to do a pure speed TAS this time, but I would definitely like to see a chaos emerald/high score run ... possibly a 100% 1-up run, since there's one in every level.

I'm convinced that Act 2 can be improved at least a unit, as TSC lists the unassisted record as 00:22 and the timer appears to behave properly in this game. On an unrelated note, this game feels a lot slower paced than does Sonic 2. ;-)

Yeah that was a first try, I'll have to revise it :P And I agree, your wip of sonic 2 is much much zippier...

OK, redid level 2... Minor improvements for the most part, except a total change in strategy on the last hill, obtaining 22 seconds, woo! Hardest part was manipulating the sign at the end not to bounce around as much, which saved over a second of "real" time.

One thing I'd like to mention although there probally won't be any use is that If you use L+R during a roll it will cause Sonic to imeadiatley stand up again while being partially in the ground, doing another roll and cancelling it will cause him to sink further, sadly I haven't found a use for it yet.
