There doesn't seem to be any easy-to-use Linux versions of FCEU nor a proper guide how to build one from the source code (It seems that people assume all Linux users are coders of some sort). Therefor I'm looking for people who are willing to help others like me, who are in a need of an easy-to-use Linux FCEU. Easy-to-use version would include: Customizable controller layout and hot keys: Now they are hard coded and require modifying the source. It's not very user friendly. Well, can't think of any other features for now. If someone else has a feature request please post it here. And if building an emulator like that is not possible, a proper guide how to modify the source and how to compile the emulator would be enough.

continuous frame advance would be nice. other than that I'm good.

for most emulators, the whole user interface would need to be rewritten to have the same featureset as the windows version. It's not an easy task and not a small request. Your best bet is probably to use wine, it works ok.

It crashed when I tried to open a ROM. And if coding it difficult, writing a guide how to do it yourself would be enough.

Yes, it seems so and it's sad. I also wanted a user-friendly version of FCEU on Linux or at least, something that is configurable via a .cfg file or something.

game keys can be configured without recompilation, you know. there's a hidden folder in your home directory with such configuration files.

Game keys can be configured with some front ends too, but not hot keys such as frame advance and so forth.

You could always try out Wallace . It's a bit odd to build (make sure you have libgstreamer-plugins-base-dev installed or it won't build). There seems to be an issue with jack under Ubuntu 7.10, and I haven't used it successfully (yet), but it looks promising. Wallace is FCEU 0.98.12 with a GTK frontend, and it looks to have movie support.

My excuse is: I am not a Linux maintainer of any of the emulators, nor do I attest to provide a Linux version of the software for Linux users.* Whatever I have done, I have done the minimum for the product to be usable for myself. After I get it working satisfyingly for me, I may give out copies to people who request it, but those copies are strictly as-is; I don't promise to expend any effort towards tailoring it for their needs, or even making it follow general "usability" pricinples. Those may contain undocumented hitches (that I know and am fine about), or external requirements that are difficult to meet. *) Even less so for Windows, of course.

If you're looking for a fairly easy-to-use emulator in general, you could try Mednafen (the NES portion is a continuation of FCEU, same author) or Nestopia (imo the UI is a bit lacking (and you need to configure gamepads manually, though not too difficult)) Otherwise, you're pretty much stuck for TAS unless you want to make it easier to use yourself.
