• Recorded with FCEU
  • From game reset to 999999, then Game Over
  • Aimed for fastest time to 999999
  • Luck manipulation
To maximize the score, I started at the highest level (19) and did only tetrises (41). I also had to do it all in the top half of the screen to drop the blocks faster, managing to fit them all up there is where most of the challenge came from.
The block sequence is affected slightly by player input (pausing the game for a very short time works best), so I took it to my advantage. I wasn't able to get exactly the blocks I wanted, but it still got me out of many dead-ends and gave a higher proportion of straight bars.
Since the blocks already drop as fast as possible the whole time, the only way I can see this movie being improved is with less pausing and trying to keep the blocks even higher.

Bisqwit: I liked this movie, and I couldn't beat it even though I tried a bit. This will be published. :)
Although, you could have started the game a little faster example adelikat: (Link no longer exists).

Well.. I wasn't too fond of the pause sequence. I think it ruined the flow alot. Until this is fixed I will vote no I'm affraid. Otherwise I liked the run so keep it up!

Now I'm gonna be a cynical person: 1. Some pauses seem longer than other, does this affect the outcome of the blocks? 2. Wouldn't it be possible to end the last row higher in order to get GAME OVER sooner? 3. Well, this hasn't got anything to do with your playing but you could have stoped the recording earlier. The movie is good, no doubt about it. (Though I feel lika total looser after playing Tetris for 10 years and still isn't able to do half of that, feels good it's tool-assisted ;) ) I won't wote untill you have answered.

Is there anything else you can do to manipulate the outcome of the blocks? Hitting buttons or the directional pad when the piece is in place might affect the outcome of the next piece. You did a phenomenal job placing the pieces, but the pausing does take away from the flow. OH - and I love that the puzzle games are getting some attention. Can't wait for someone to make Anticipation interesting.

Nice work, but the pauses killed it for me.

The pauses weren't disturbing to me. Most of the pauses were just 1-2 frames long - you could tell it blinked a bit but you couldn't say what was it. Some of the pauses were clear enough to see that there's a textbox in the middle of the screen, but none of them was clearly long. I liked this movie.

I'm not sure a puzzle movie can entertain me. Until I see one I'll just have to vote no, even though I don't have any complaints about how you played.

It does, although I just found out the frame I pause on also affects it, so there could be some minor improvement there ... but I still can't seem to get exactly the blocks I want. Player input doesn't affect it directly (that's what I tried first), the only other thing I noticed that does is how long it takes for the block to drop ... since that depends entirely on where I place it (on Level 19 and higher), I couldn't get satisfying results.

Yes, but filling up the blocks a little more before the last tetris would have taken longer than the additional drop I had to do for Game Over.

By about 1 second, true, but that can easily be fixed ...

The number of rotations also affects the block after next, but it's hard to manipulate such a thing at level 19 (2 frames per block drop). I made a video like this that didn't manipulate luck because I didn't even consider pausing.. I thought it wasn't good enough so I never submitted it. This one is much better.
someone is out there who will like you. take off your mask so they can find you faster. I support the new Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun.

I didn't mind the pause blips. On the contrary, I thought they were pretty funny. They look like subliminal messages or something, I guess.

I enjoyed this. Very well played. I used to be a Tetris addict back when I got my first Gameboy many many years ago. I feel old.

Heh, nice to see you over here Acmlm. (I used to post on your boards under the name WhooHooD'oh, before the reset.) I remember your old NESticle movie too, where you got all those tetrises...though that wasn't nearly as rockin' as this one. :) I remember some guy in another thread saying that the game actually got faster at level 30...would've been nice to see you go that far, but there wouldn't really be anything to do at that point besides maybe show off a few tetrises for a bit, since you'd already have 999999 points...

I liked this, very entertaining indeed. This also quite easily approachable since most people have played some variant of tetris. Oh, the pauses didn't bother me at all.

Oh, absolutely. I wouldn't have voted otherwise. I'm just thinking out loud here, trying to figure out how to be entertained by a puzzle movie. The pauses didn't bother me at all. The music starting and stopping got a little irritating though.

Not as old as I feel. I got my Gameboy as a present for my Bar Mitzvah.

Last night something struck me; I think you should cancel this poll and submit a new movie where you stop the movie when the second last L block hit its target. According to the rules you have the right to do that since you don't do any more inputs after that, right? That would probably shave of 2 seconds.

Or I could stop it as soon as the last block before 999999 is in place, which would cut off at least 4 seconds ... but then that might be a bit early to stop at ...

The one at zophar.net (from 4 years ago) where I did 16 tetrises in a row? That must be the best I've done with normal play (NESticle only supported slowdowns/frame-by-frame for movie recording anyway), so that was still pretty nice ... The block speed after 19 finally goes up at 29, all the way to 1 frame per tile (I found that out about 3 years ago using slowdowns). That's instant death normally, but still beatable with slowdowns, and it does continue after 29 (with glitched level numbers!) ... but getting the movie that far would mean scoring 19 more tetrises (about 2 more minutes), unless I don't start from Reset and do it just to show off. And yeah, nice to find you here too, hehe.
