My favourite FF is the SNES jap-only one with the crystal shards and the many chooseable job classes. Second favourite one is FFX. And those are the only ones I've completed. I hated FFX2 and FFCC and disliked FFT. The other SNES ones are OK imo. I haven't played the remaining ones at all.

1. FFVI (all versions are pretty good) 2. FFIV (GBA port is excellent but has a couple new bugs - (E) version corrects them) 3. FFX Bonus games: Chrono Trigger and EarthBound are like the two finest games ever made in my opinion.

I think you're talking about FF5.

My favourite FF game (though I never finished it and am not sure if it's really a FF game) was Final Fantasy Legends III for the Gameboy. You only had four permanent characters, but you could change them to robots, monsters, cyborgs... Was great IMO. Ranked below I'd go with... Hmm. Now that I think about it, I've never really beaten a FF game without cheating. I guess I didn't really like them that much. But the only games where I bothered to cheat to finish the game were FF6 and FF4, so I guess I'll put those at 2nd and 3rd place.

Thanks a ton everyone. It's interesting how different everyone thinks about these games, and why they are liked or not. I think this list is the first where I've seen two people vote for X-2 as a favorite, which makes me happy because it'll be the next one I pick up after X. As for VII, I'm making good progress and liking it more now that I have a much better understanding of the materia (I also like the cross-over of the summonings/aeon names between VII and X)

That's fair enough, I did the same, but be prepared for a less captivating game. And annoying characters... :/

Yeah, you'll get that with pretty much all of the FF games. Some people think its tedious (or lack of originality) but I like seeing the continuation of some of them (Bahamut goes from strength to strength). Anyway, my top 3? Hmmm... 1. 7 (Unsuprisingly. Check out the avatar) 2. 10 3. 9 9 sneaks in before 8 because the game is marginally more entertaining overall but its pretty close between the 2. Also I miss out the old-schoolers because I didn't play any of them until after 9, and while I still enjoyed playing them all immensely my standard for interactivity (for the lack of a better word) had already been set. Make sure you play 4, 5 and 6 though, they are still too good to miss.

It plays very differently from X, just so you know. The battle systm is really fun and fast (I've only played it for a few hours - but THIS is the Active Time Battle I've wanted since FF4!) rather than slow and calculating, and it uses the Job system (from FF3, FF5, FFT, etc) instead of the Sphere Grid.

The summoned beasts are actually the gods of the FF worlds and appear in every game since FF3 (more or less). Since the Crystals went away in FF5 the summons and occasional references to the Jobs are the only ties between the FF games.

What about CID, WEDGE, CHOCOBOS & every monster on the field, like CACTUARS... ? I seen them in almost every FF.

For some reason, FFXII did not appeal to me much. It's hard to put my finger on it, but I kinda felt that it didn't happen very much with the game's story. It was more like "go to this gigantic field, explore it, kill all the monsters and take all the treasures, reach the end of the field, see a movie sequence, go to another huge area, etc." I didn't really like the characters in this game either... they felt so... dull. The game wasn't terrible or anything, it was an okay game, it's just that I found it (I know you're gonna throw rocks on me for this, but), in a way, linear. For both good and bad, there were a lot of sidequests, but I don't think that a huge selection of sidequests at the later parts of the game makes it non-linear. Does anyone agree/disagree with me on this?
All Final Fantasies are equally linear. Actually, considering you can sink hundreds of hours into the sidequests, I could be so bold as to say that XII is less linear than other Final Fantasies, seeing as sidequests are the only diversions from the set-in-stone path in every single installment, and XII has them in greater abundance and are more time-consuming than its predecessors. Also, I loved Balthier and Fran. Kick Vaan out of the party and give princess hotpants more personality and you'd have a winner of a cast, I think. As an aside, it would be really cool if they could get Nomura to stop rehashing the brunette in hotpants main girl ad nauseum. And maybe pry him away from zippers and belts. I swear, if he ever puts a zipper on a belt, I'm going to personally shoot him.

1. Final Fantasy X-2 International + Last Mission I know it's kind of girlish where 3 characters giggling around, but it's very large games, several things to do. Several 'super-bosses', new-game+, mini-games like sphere-break, blitzball, sand digging, mastering the dressphere (job system thing). What's included from International version are 2 more dressphere, able to capture monster and let it fight for you, use it in creature create tournament, fight old enemies in creature create as well (lulu, tidus, auron, brother, buddy, etc), more even more harder super-bosses, "Last Mission" bonus game with 100 floors tower and more cutscenes. 2. Final Fantasy 4 Advanced Good old game included with character switch (Cid, Edward, Yang, Polom, and Porom) and 2 new dungeons. I could play it again, again, again and still enjoy it. I'm a little disappointed with buggy / laggy battle but still playable. 3. Final Fantasy XII Tough choice between XII and X. It used to look like large game, mmorpg-style game is my type of game. When I try to replay it the game seem kind of small, but playing it with challenge is pretty fun (122333 challenge). International version is uninteresting for me (zodiac system, damage uncapped, and few minor stuff, bah). Runner-Ups 4. Final Fantasy X I still enjoy it because of unique battle system with character switching and battle order. If I had International version, it might have been 3rd place - what's included in International version are: dark aeons, Penance, different sphere-grid setup from newgame screen. 5. Final Fantasy 5 Advanced I always enjoyed beginning and switch around job. Game gets dull later on thou. Bonus jobs from Advanced was a plus. 6. Final Fantasy 9 I have only played it once, but I'll plan to play it again later. I enjoyed it more than any other series. I even thought about playing it with Level 1 challenge but it involves heavy manipulate at the beginning so I didn't bother starting the challenge (FF12 122333 is much easier, trust me) If you were wondering why I didn't rank others, I did play them before but they're just gets too dull at the second replay, or over hype.

Part of me has wanted to pick up XI for the sake of completeness, but I know I would only play it for a day before shelving it permanently. Horrible music, for one. And how can a game that unimpressive with the visuals still choke up the hardware constantly? If connection lag is the culprit, then they sorely need restructuring and flogging. Oh, and there's also the matter of that you have to play with people on the internet, who are invariably insufferable deranged assholes incapable of comprehending or utilizing intelligent speech. That, by far, is its biggest shortcoming. Murdering language is still murder. We have untold millions of serial killers running rampant on MMOs, and they're a big part of why I can't tolerate the genre. </elitistbitch>

1. 6 2. 5 3. 7 I admit to not being experienced in FF games, though.

1. FF VII (PSX) - The plot is outstanding. It's vague enough for another playthrough right after you have beaten it once, while still being clear enough to follow it. 2. FF V (GBA) - The plot is rather basic/cliché but battles, leveling, skills etc. are just so wonderful. I'd suggest the GBA version because there is a little more to do. 3. FF X (PS2) - I don't really know why I think so highly of this one :P. Probably the new leveling system and all the sidequests where you can get some über items to help you along the way. And I guess the plot is also quite nice. I could probably talk about Final Fantasies hours after hours so I'd better try to stop here before I find myself writing a novel about them in this post :P. I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you have any questions or something regarding FFs, feel free to msg me.

I agree with you. The Digimon part sounds so lame, but if you are at all interested in turn based RPG, you should try it.
Which run should I encode next? :)

I always felt VII was a step backwards from VI. I really liked the Materia system, and it had catchy music, and Midgar has brilliant atmosphere, but otherwise, I still think it's overrated. Square definitely managed a brilliant marketing campaign, though. Without those commercials, your average gamer would still look at you funny if you mentioned Final Fantasy in conversation. ... I'll admit, however, that I've played through it more times than any other game in the series. Mainly because I got into an argument over whether or not you could beat the game in 24 hours, and I produced a North Crater save with 22:53 on the clock. After that, I kept working at it to see how low I could go, but I definitely fell short of the world record, with a pitiful 18 hour time as my best run. I just didn't have it in me to save and reload constantly for the sake of luck manipulation. Maybe if I had savestates...

In regards to the X and X-2 international versions, I read that they were only released in Japan, leading me to believe they would have mostly Japanese text/voices. Is there an English version of the game with all of the extras available?

While they were only released in Japan, they feature English voice dialogue, with a choice between Japanese and English subtitles. Wouldn't make much sense to call it 'International' if it only catered to a Japanese audience, right?

True, but stranger things have happened. Since they were a Japan release, will they work on a USA PS2, or does the region restrictions fuck everything up?

No, the region restrictions are still a cog in the works. But, you could always just pick up a set of Swap Magic disks for PS2. Cheaper than a hardware mod, at least.

Yes they work on USA PS2, it just that device in the tray detects "other region" on the disc then block it. That's where slide-card tool comes in the play. Slide-card tool is used to open disc tray and close disc tray, if you push "eject" button instead, it'll redo region detection. Swap-magic is used to "boot up" the disc.

I believe only X international have ability to switch between text language to English and Japanese. All other just have Japanese text, and with mixture of English and Japanese voice.

VII VIII I in that order. What strikes me is that they have really strayed from the path ever since number 8. I mean, they went on to have the main character have a tail, to having a leveling system that was totally broken (every job lol?) to an MMO. XII is getting closer to the point, but the day I realized that I could set things up in a way that I was no longer needed by the game, I just felt dirty. They really need to get back to the baisics. I appriciate that they try new thigns, but I really felt like every title since 8 has been ruined for one reason or another.
