1. I'd used to use Famtasia 5.1, but I'm now unable to, because I now have Windows XP. It always says that there's an error with it, whenever it goes through its Best Draw deal, then it asks me if I want to send a report of the error, and then it just closes. I'm never able to use it. Is there any way to fix this? Since it doesn't work, I'd downloaded FCE Ultra, but... 2. ...how do you make the FCE Ultra recording feature work? I'd downloaded the both RAR files, but they show the icons that mean that they have to be opened by using some type of file. Right now, they're in the FCE Ultra folder. Playing games on the regular (non-recording) emulator is fine, but I want to record some games using FCE Ultra just to try it out, and find out what the hype is all about. I'm also unable to watch the movies, since it's the regular emulator, obviously.

To get the patched Famtasia working, [EDIT]: you need to use the updated patch vending machine. As for FCEU recording, are you sure you downloaded and extracted the recording-supporting version?

You'll also need WinRAR to deal with those RAR files (I'm assuming you haven't decompressed them or anything, since you say you just put them in the FCEU folder). Install it then you can just right-click on the RAR files and go to "Extract here".

I'm back from work, and now, I've done what you both have said, and I thank you. You 2 have made me realize about how to make the emulators work. Now, I have tried a tiny bit of both. A few more questions, and it's about FCE Ultra: Are there shortcut keys to press for quick saving and quick loading? If so, how can I configure them, if that feature is available? The second question is quite the same, but I wonder about the same thing for the use of slow motion. Where can it be found, can I use a shortcut key, and can I configure it to the setting that make it easier for myself?

If you want to try a free RAR extracter and one that is more efficent, try 7-Zip Edit: As to your question: Go to, in the menu bar, config->map hotkeys. You can fix both of your problems there. Edit 2: I had said that 7-zip supports more file types, but it seems WinRAR supports more, though I have never even heard of half of they types that it supports

In other news, I haven't figured out exactly what situation causes FCEU to crash for me, but I'm almost positive it's triggered by the pause key. Does someone who has the code want to look into that, maybe?

Yeah it sometimes crashed on me when unpausing, but for now i'm just using it frame-by-frame so it's not really an issue.

But don't you have to pause to use frame-by-frame?

I need to pause to use frame-by-frame, but I don't really need to unpause. If I remember correctly it occured when I saved then unpaused to go from playing frame by frame, to playing with a slowdown. It didn't always happen, but it happened enough times for me to just give up on pausing/unpausing regularly while recording.

It crashes on me (always sometimes) when: - I hit f6 by mistake (the magic crash key) instead of f5 save or f7 reload (sausage fingers - a curse - had to change these keys) - I save or reload at a seriously low speed (6% or less) - I come out of frame by frame Dunno - I've gotten really good at making back-ups of everything. From experience with it, however, there are 2 types of crashing: 1) It freezes and goes straight to the pop-up "serious problem, needs to close or you'll explode" message - hope you made a back-up. 2) It freezes and the sound scrambles at about 500% volume - you have a couple of seconds to "stop movie" before getting the heart-attack message. If you get there fast enough (I play with my pinky on 'alt'), you can hang on to your progress. Then close and restart. I don't know what any of this means, but it's helped me along the way.
