Arkanoid games do have bosses, although Arkanoid 3 for the Super Nintendo is littered with them. I do know of a few other Arkanoid clones, but none for the NES like you seem to have indicated.
A hundred years from now, they will gaze upon my work and marvel at my skills but never know my name. And that will be good enough for me.

When I was younger, I remember playing a game on the Sega Genesis. I don't remember much about it, but I do remember that after you beat the first stage, you could choose which stage to go afterwards; there was an overworld "map" that appeared after you beat said stage. Also, if you died once, then it was game over; I know this because one of the stages selectable had a boss that you had to fight right at the beginning of the stage. I think that there were some RPG elements to it like leveling up, but I'm not entirely sure about that. Here's hoping that someone knows what I'm talking about.

Anon: This is just a shot in the dark, but I figured what the hell. Revengers of Vengeance is a sega CD game (not genesis), but it is kind of what you are talking about.

Perhaps I remember it to be far better than it was, and it was just the original Arkanoid for the NES or something. Still, can't hurt to ask here. Thanks.
You might be thinking of Devilish/Bad Omen. It was released on the Genesis/Mega Drive and the Game Gear.

One game I'm trying to find is on the Genesis. Its like Mega Man buts its not. Each level you complete gives you a new character with different abilties and attributes generally they get stronger but sometimes the earlier ones are more suited to certain levels. The levels are relativley short and linear and have a big boss at the end of each one.

Here's another game I enjoyed but can't remember the name of; It's an SNES title where you control a group of three or four ninjas, who have very miniature pixels, reminding me strongly of the later Little Fighter 2. In one of the levels, they're running around on the snow, fighting enemies.

I love Cannon Fodder, but no, it's not the game I'm talking about. After all, it's a group of three or four ninjas, fighting with swords and shurikens. Not a bunch of soldiers fighting with guns, bazookas, and grenades. Plus, the graphics aren't quite that small.

Thanks FODA and IronSlayer, that appears to be the game I'm looking for. Seems like I remembered most of it right at least... too bad I can't play it, since it seems to be arcade only. I looked through the other requests, but none of them seem to be any games I know...

A shot in the dark here: Was it an RPG? If it was, then maybe it was Inindo: Way of the Ninja?

A first-person style racing/formula1 game for Atari 2600. I can't find out what game it was.

Sounds like Pole Position. Edit: Link removed. I failed to realize that I linked to a ROM site. ;>_>

Pole Position isn't first person. The only other racing game I can remember is Enduro I've never seen a first-person racing game for that system.

It's a really old game that came on one of those systems that used cassette tapes and took forever to load. You could select different planets to go to (each planet was one level) , I remember there was what I think was a "city" level and an underwater level, and the underwater level had a huge crab or something that traveled along a fixed path. The objective was to collect blue orbs of some sort and then probably return to your starting position (marked by a white box that might have been an elevator door or something). You couldn't really attack anything, you just had to avoid the bad guys (of which I think there weren't that many, most obstacles were environmental). 2D Side-scrolling. Wow, I just remembered something else. The music of the game was, or was very similar, to this thing here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQdgJYhsrc0 (Blue Danube Waltz by Strauss) I have made a mock-screenshot in paint of something from the underwater level. A formation of spikes you can't touch, there's a blue orb inside it and the white thing is your character. You could 'swim' in the water by jumping repeatedly. (please note that my memory of the game has been distorted by time):

Wow, I think that might be it. Thanks pirate_sephiroth. And I didn't know how good or bad the game was. The main thing I remember was what I posted above, and that once I died to the boss, then my friend and I went back to playing Sonic & Knuckles.

although probably not correct, i remember a genesis game called "the magical school bus" or something along those lines. In that, too, you did all of those things... although it was not that old of a game, so probably not ported to/from a cassette.

Pole Position is probably the game Bisqwit is looking for, but just a shot in the dark could it possibly be Night Driver ? (in the 2600 version the blocky lookin car kinda looks like an f-1 car even though its not)
I like stuff...

That game looks surprisingly cool, like a more advanced version of the old DOS adventure games I enjoyed in my childhood, but again, it's not what I had in mind. If I had to assign a date to it, it would probably be an SNES game that came out in either 1994 or 1995. It's funny; I had virtually no hope that anyone could answer my first request, while I thought the second one was a softball. Funny how it's been the exact opposite.

This is an original Gameboy game. The box art features a purple dinosaur holding a shovel. In the game you dig holes and have to find keys or something to progress to the next level. It's a puzzle/action game I think. Also, another original Gameboy game. It's a sci-fi/spacey platformer. Your character is wearing some sort of combat suit or driving a mech of some kind, or maybe is a robot, it doesn't just look like a person anyway. I think one of the bosses is a fish skeleton.

Request: A Genesis action game, freescrolling (IIRC). You control a… well, robot with some awesome mechabike, which can combine or go separately (in which case you either pilot a robot with the bike going underneath, or just the robot). You're supposed to shoot stuff and probably complete some other objectives. There was a desert level and a cave level. That's all I remember about it.

!! That's it, thanks! Seems like we had the JP version here for some reason, because I totally remember it being named Ex-Ranza. And it looks like the game has some TAS potential.
