This used to be one of my favorite games, back when I had an SNES. I'm not sure how good it would be for timeattacking/speedrunning, but I think it could be made to look impressive. - Boost whenever possible to speed things up. - Get 100% of enemies. - Kill bosses as fast as possible. - Take Black Hole route. I would try this myself, but I don't have much free time, plus Snes9.x keeps desyncing on me. Like, I'll play through Corneria, then replay the movie and run into a wall. :s Is there a common solution to this? Oh, and by the way, hello everyone!

I was thinking that a 100% enemy kill with a 100% hit rate would be interesting to see even if it wasn't publish worthy. I mean, whenever I play I've got less than a 5% hit rate... I think... well, that and I crash into everything. But, hmmm, so it's a desyncing game? Apparently Mortal Kombat is the same. These games appear to desync at random times. It seems to me that there's some aspect of the games...load time or random number generation...that's slipping past the movie recording feature. Anyways, that aside, I wouldn't work on it. My current run is time consuming enough and I've got a few ideas on what I'm going to do afterwards. Well, that and I think it'll also be a pain in the arse to work on even if recording worked...

boosting doesnt move the screen faster, it just moves the ship forward but then it goes back? i mean... the level still takes exactly the same amount of time to end no matter if you brake or boost.. i always thought that way, maybe i'm wrong

Yeah, boost and brake don't actually change the speed at which the level scrolls. Think of it like moving forward and backward in Gradius. You change position, but it's not going to make the level go quicker. But hey, Gradius III is a very entertaining run, so if the desynch problem is fixed, I'm sure Star Fox will be entertaining. Does the black hole level act as a shortcut? It's been so long since I've played, I can't remember. All I remember was that the third path was much more difficult but a lot more fun.

I always thought that boost sped the ship up, then the meter recharged until another boost, but you don't lose speed. I could be wrong though. And I think the black hole works like: You enter from the first asteroid field (Level 1). Then you exit at a certain spot and end up in Sector... Y, I think. Maybe X. Whichever one has the Plasma Hydra as the boss. So, in effect, you skip the third stage and take the black hole, which is a lot shorter. Corneria -> Asteroid Belt -> Black Hole -> Sector Y -> Venom -> Venom Surface -> Andross

Ok, I've found out that the movie only desyncs if I record at lesser-than-normal speed. Playing through Corneria at full speed, the movie worked fine. Playing through Corneria with two Shift+'-' , the movie desynced when I got to the boss. I'm starting to wonder if I just need to turn off some option.

Hmmm...does it also desync if you record while pause\frame-advancing?

Pausing doesn't seem to affect it. What is this "frame-advancing"?

Frame advancing doesn't desync the movie. And (surprise) neither does slow-mo anymore. My old slow-mo test movie still doesn't work, but some new ones I've made do. I have no idea why. One question though: When I frame advance, I have to press the '\' key at least 3 times before a frame actually goes by. Is this normal? And another: Is there any way to set the pause button to something other than "Pause/Break"? I really don't like reaching my hand up there, especially when I'm in the middle of something difficult and I need precise timing.

isnt that because the game looks like it's 10 frames per second? so it's 3 equal frames, then next 3, and so on...

Yeah, I know this is an old thread, but I figured it's better to reuse a thread than to create a new one. So anyway, I finally got to really working on my Star Fox run. Here is my run of Corneria. I hit my teammate once on purpose but didn't lose any health from it. I'm not sure if it's a glitch or if first-hits just aren't supposed to hurt, but I think it's kinda cool. 100% of enemies killed, no damage taken, twin blasters gotten. Side note: This game runs faster on my computer than on my SNES.

I always have had the problem of StarFox running faster on my emulator than it should, so fast that I can't play it, yet the audio does not speed up. The opening scene with the Arwings flying through the tunnel doesn't sync up with the sound of the guy saying "[unrecognizable speech] prepare for launch." Sucks cuz I really like this game! Although personally I don't think it'd make a great movie. Starfox 64 might, because it has a more advanced system of keeping score. Not that we have re-recording N64 emulators just lying around, but yeah.

I don't know why it's desyncing for you. I'm using the "Star Fox (V1.2) (U) [!].smc" rom Upon some timing tests, I have come to conclude that boosting is faster than not boosting. Also, I'm not sure but I think the nova bomb will do more damage to the Attack Carrier if it hits directly instead of the ground below. Thus, I'm going to redo Corneria. Does anyone know of any glitches that, though perhaps not useful, are nevertheless cool? I'd like to incorporate some into this movie, but I don't know of any.

got it to work after disabling WIP1 timing. you might want to use the latest improvement to snes9x so it records your synchronization options as well. other than that it looked pretty good :)

This one uses WIP timing. I noticed that nova bombs are affected by gravity. I shot one really high at the boss so it would come down and hit him. I was hoping I could boost to the music, but unfortunately a boost takes a tiny bit too long for that. Oh well.

sorry for reactivating this old thread but i wanted to ask you guys if there is a speedrun through the whole game. The speedruns i saw here where only for the first level.

I agree a pure speed run is really pointless as the game has a set speed, but Id definitely watch a 100% kill/fast bosses, as ive never beaten anything past route level 1..

I just tested this and found that boosting does in fact decrease the amount of time it takes to reach the end of the level (by somewhere between 10 and 20 frames per boost).

Also, on the first level speedrun by YB, wouldn't it be keeping more in the spirit of the site by choosing the third route (play at hardest difficulty). And it's also possible to choose and select a level a bit quicker, I'll upload a .smv of the fastest method I found when I get back home, it's a bit weird because of the way this game registers button presses (because it runs at 20fps).

http://www.nerdparadise.com/crap/Omni/StarFox.smv I had made it on v1.0, it's 10 frames faster and chooses the hardest difficulty, not more than 5 frames can be from the differences between versions, and I think that v1.0 is actually slower than v1.2, but I'll have to test that.

Star Fox 1.2 should have a faster/better graphics chip in it than 1.0. So even if it starts up more slowly I'd suggest using 1.2, unless it turns out that Snes9x doesn't properly emulate the chip difference and causes 1.2 to be slower everywhere.
