I'm getting married in about a month. I think a lot of people on this site are around marriage age and I was curious if anyone else has stories about working gaming or other geek culture into a wedding. So obviously I am a total gaming geek. If you are familiar with my TAS work, you might know that I am a bit of a Square-Enix Fanboy. The bride is a prolific fanfic writer and has a huge collection of manga and anime. We've been together for over three years and have pulled each other into those worlds a bit. So it's only natural to find some way to get that into the whole process. But the ceremony is mostly traditional American and will be attended mostly by older family and family friends so we can't go too overboard. Anyway, I was actually able to work gaming into the proposal! I presented a blue feather a la Harvest Moon. This worked out very well as it allowed me to give something physical but shop for the ring together. I requested that we pick our first dance song from a Final Fantasy soundtrack. This was fine with the bride as FF actually has a lot of danceable music. We have some experience with several ballroom styles and won't be just standing around. We settled on "1000 Words" from Final Fantasy X-2. I know it's not by Uematsu, but we like the J-Pop energy. Another Japanese import item is in the decorations. We completed 1000 origami cranes and we're going to string them up around the room as part of the decorations for the reception. I'm actually fairly skilled with origami so getting married was a great excuse to do this.

As long as you don't mind the odd reaction, I think it's a great idea as long as both parties agree to it. Marriage is a celebration of love and...you get the point. When the time comes, all that matters is the two of you. Congratulations and all the best!

Sarcastic response: I'd like to see you pull off Real Emotion at a wedding. Honest response: the cranes are a nice touch. And you really wouldn't want to go overboard with the theme anyway, as it might be a touch awkward to look back on. Either way, congratulations!

Yeah, it WILL be awkward to look back on... but... well... life is short, and you will only be able to regret what you actually did... so, move on and do your weird shit while you can. heheh

This topic reminds me of a joke. I don't remember the exact words, but it was something along this lines...: What did a hardcore gamer geek player asked to his girlfriend? Will you be my 2p? (2nd player)

First of all, congratulations! If I were getting married, I would want to have rings like the One ring. (from the movie) They're just good looking, classic rings. Other than that, I can't really think of anything. Maybe a big pixelated Megaman cake (in addition to the level 60 wedding cake), but that might be considered too much. Just please, please do not have a Star Trek themed wedding. :P

For my brother's wedding, my family (or rather, the women in our family) decided to whip up a Mario themed groom's cake. That was the extent of geekiness in that wedding.
A hundred years from now, they will gaze upon my work and marvel at my skills but never know my name. And that will be good enough for me.

If I ever get married, I'm totally having something geeky-related in it, even if my family will probably feel embarassment for me not going traditional. However, first I actually have to get a girlfriend. One step at a time. :p

My wedding is coming up next July, and doesn't have anything gaming related in it, and the only geek content is me. I can't say I really care though, I've always thought of games as just something to play, not something to build a mini-culture around.

i've always considered games and computers to be my whole life, not just a pastime. honestly though... girls are our whole life, because if there were no girls, there would be no life on earth.

Men, on the other hand, are obsolete. :D Edit: I should perhaps remind that this message is in jest, before someone mentions the high rate of potential birth defects, etc etc.

yes, i've heard of that before. some day it will probably be possible to grow a baby inside some kind of artificial womb too, then you don't need a woman either, you just need cells or something. talk about a boring way to reproduce though... but i guess it's good news for gays and those who naturally can't have their own babies.

Back in the day, I used to be in a band called The Final Sacrifice (yes, that's an MST3K reference). A couple of our friends got married a couple years ago and asked us to play at their wedding. I wish I could remember the setlist, but I'm pretty sure we played: - Brave Fencer Musashi - Topo's Dance Groove - SMB2 - Underworld - Starfox - Corneria - Duck Tales - Moon Level - Mega Man 2 Password Screen - Castlevania (2?) - Bloody Tears - Sk8 or Die - Intro (?) - Final Fantasy (NES) - Battle Music - TMNT (NES) - Overworld - Metroid (NES) - Title - Gunstar Heroes - Ending - Legend of Zelda (NES) - Title Only the bride and groom really knew what was going on, and it absolutely ruled. At one point, the groom dedicated a ridiculous guitar solo to the bride.

oh... and it's good to mention: "Marriage is the triumph of imagination over intelligence. Second marriage is the triumph of hope over experience." Oscar Wilde
