There was one movie noticeably missing from the "one player controls two characters" catergory. Actually, it's probably only noticeable to me. By the way, alden, you missed a game on your list. Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance Maxim run.

Aqfaq: I love it too. I think "Genesis Games Without Water" would be a funny, random thing to list. I feel a bit slow that I didn't get the water thing though :) arkiandruski: I think I fixed the missing game. Also, I'm glad you pointed out one of the more obvious games for me... Actually, I think it's good idea, alden! Themed Movie Lists are kind of unofficial alternative to strict categories. Because there are a lot of common aspects in movies, but not all of them can be grouped by undisputable rules. While there can't be such category as "Doesn't play the game", it looks just fine as less formal "theme list". So keep it up! Here's an idea (shabby one). It would be interesting to see such themed list: tool-assisted speedruns that correspond to unassisted records in terms of time (let's say, unassisted run should have no more than +5% to TAS record). First nominee being SMB, of course. Another idea (doesn't require being too familiar with unassisted speedrunning). A lot of movie descriptions say that the movie "makes difficult game seem easy", but there's no such tag (because it's a little subjective). So what about themed list for these movies?

Cool, good suggestions AnS! Though I'd need some help with picking movies for those. I'll add them to my list of stubs http://tasvideos.org/Alden/Exhibitions.html. ShinyDoofy also nicely did some encodes for Gruefood on the AVGN list, which I'll update as well. I'm still open to suggestions for anything :)

The opposite could also work: TASes which are enormously faster than their unassisted counterparts. How about this simple idea: TASes of the most popular games ever. I don't think there is such a list yet anywhere. This list could actually be interesting and useful for many.

A list of surprisingly entertaining runs of relatively unknown games would be a lot more useful I think.

So, I linked to ShinyDoofy's streaming/download encodes: http://tasvideos.org/Alden/Exhibitions/AVGN.html And added: http://tasvideos.org/Alden/Exhibitions/BestSellingGames.html I'm eager to hear more ideas...

This just seems to be a list of all mario, sonic, metroid and castlevania games... I don't know if such a list really adds anything. A list of all mario games, a list of all sonic games, ...etc, would probably be more useful. Btw, some of the movies you posted at the start are listed twice (for instance mm1 and zelda). And also, is the Mario Adventure hack really one of the most popular games ever? (And there were some others that just seemed to be there since they had the title "mario" or whatever in it.

This quite rightly says "Alden" at the top, and /AldensMovieSuggestions.html would probably be a better name for the page. It sounds like a list of movies that got a rating that you think should be higher. Lots of the movies have a really low rating, (lots below 6, and one even below a 5). I think a movie suggestions list (even if it are of relatively unknown games) that would be based upon general opinion would look really different.

Well, here's the entire source of that long page:
A huge load of games with "popular" names.

[module:displaymovie|id=1080]
[module:displaymovie|id=1066]
[module:displaymovie|id=868]
[module:displaymovie|id=844]
[module:displaymovie|id=1103]
[module:displaymovie|id=901]

----
----
----

[module:displaymovie|name=mario]
[module:displaymovie|name=sonic]
[module:displaymovie|name=zelda]
[module:displaymovie|name=metroid]
[module:displaymovie|name=mega]
[module:displaymovie|name=rockman]
[module:displaymovie|name=castlevania]
So you are pretty much on the nose; this was mostly experimenting with passing different parameters to displaymovie.

Yes, I didn't mean to say that that speaks for the site, just that I tried to choose more obscure games than most favorites list, somewhat in the vein of your initial proposal. I would also like to see a list generated from broader opinion, but that differs in some significant way from a list of highest rated movies. A while back I tried to compile a frequently suggested movie list, which is somewhat different than highest rated: http://tasvideos.org/Alden/FrequentlySuggested.html But it was a small sample and tricky to calculate.

I think you are confusing "popular games" with "popular franchises". Super Mario Bros? Yes, immensely popular. *Everyone* who hasn't been living in a cave has heard of that game. Castlevania Legends? Uh? What's that? Might be "popular" by number of copies sold, but it's not the kind of popularity I was thinking about. I was thinking more about mainstream gaming media popularity. Everybody has heard of SMB and Sonic the Hedgehog, most gamers might have heard about Castlevania, but I don't think too many even know what something like "Castlevania Legends" or "Sonic Advance" is. It may be part of a popular/known franchise, but not really a popular *game*. I think it would be better to list just the most representative games of the popular franchises, plus individual games which can be considered well-known by average gamers.

Yeah, it should be called "games with popular names"... again, more just experimenting. I think this list does it a bit better, and is more "quantitatively objective": http://tasvideos.org/Alden/Exhibitions/BestSellingGames.html

I just compiled a themed list of my own. I call it Animal Planet, runs of games that star animals in the lead role. There were a few gray areas in compiling this list. Generally, any game where you transform into an animal wasn't included, so Altered Beast and Wonder Boy 3 didn't make the cut; however, Toki did, since even though you're playing as a human turned monkey, polymorphing isn't a part of the gameplay itself. Also, animal themed humans weren't included, so no Batman or Spiderman.
A hundred years from now, they will gaze upon my work and marvel at my skills but never know my name. And that will be good enough for me.

Could it be a good idea to split that list into three sub-categories: 1) Non-anthropomorphized animals: Gex 64, Donkey Kong, Ecco the Dolphin, Lion King, etc. 2) Anthropomorphized animals: Battletoads, Samurai Pizza Cats, Duck Tales, Felix the Cat, etc. 3) Fictive animals (even if loosely based on real ones): Gremlins, Sonic, TAZ Mania... Although I must admit in some cases it may be difficult to decide which category the game should go in. For example Chip 'n Dale, Chiki Chiki Machine Mou Race, Rocket Knight Adventures, etc.

How about we just keep it simple and leave them together in one lump sum? ;P Although your sub-category idea WOULD give a place to those polymorphic games. Your post got me thinking, and I decided to remove Gremlins for being too fantastical and fictive. However, I'm still debating over whether or not I should include Bubble Bobble (they strike me as being rather fantastical as well, which is why they're not on right now).

Another idea which that gave me: - Games based on cartoon TV series. - Games based on live TV series. - Games based on movies. All those may be under one single category page, but divided into those sub-categories. Edit: Oh, and another one: - Games based on a comic book. I think there are a few of those too (Batman comes to mind, at least).

Heh, I had listed Disney movies as a potential future list... but a whole movie category with sub-categories would be cool. If anyone wants to help making the list... ;) Edit: Made a page for Ferret's Animal Planet. No subcategories yet: http://tasvideos.org/Alden/Exhibitions/AnimalPlanet.html Feel free to edit it :)

I suggest that you add these movies: http://tasvideos.org/movies.cgi?id=587,721,803,903,994,1105,1129,1177,1199,1217,1227,1233 These movies can be arguable: http://tasvideos.org/movies.cgi?id=690,790,1051,1139,1175 EDIT: I suggest that you'd update some obsolete entries to the latest ones, since "faster movies" = "more things skipped", usually. EDIT 2: Added Movie 690. EDIT 3: Added Movie 587 & 721. Updated Movie 1055 to 1217. EDIT 4: Added Movie 803, 1105 and 1199. EDIT 5: Added Movie 1227. EDIT 6: Added Movie 790 & 1051. EDIT 7: Added Movie 1233. Moved Movie 1105.

Btw, you should add the Milon's Secret Castle to the AVGN list, as he reviewed it recently.

More like MILON'S SHITTY ASSHOLE I went back and re-watched the TAS after that and it put it into a whole new perspective...
