A beta was released last week and soon after that it was available in p2p services. Anyone tested it?

Tests show it's as slow as Vista. I honestly see no point in a beta being released.

I honestly don't know why ANYONE would have ANY reason to try it. If you want to use Windows, there's Windows XP, which is pretty stable and actually works. If you want something else, well, there are plenty of choices out there. What's the point of purposely making your computer worse? It's not like Windows 7 is free in any sense, so the hacker motivation is not there. Windows 7 (and Vista as well, for that matter) is pointless, don't bother.

What I honestly don't understand is why release a beta for the next version of Windows *now*. People have still not migrated to Vista (if I'm not mistaken it's like 90% of Windows users still have XP). Now they will have even less motivation to do so, as an even newer version is coming soon. Or maybe this is a silent admission by Microsoft that "yes, we screwed up a bit with Vista, so we will be fixing this mistake sooner than we really expected".

Christ, you're all so unbelievably biased. It's a pre-alpha. Give them a damn break before your start your "same as Vista" and "slower than Vista" witch-hunts.

Or maybe Vista is Windows ME. Nobody uses it because it's a piece of garbage, and they'll get it right in the next version. (disclaimer: I have not used, and do not plan to ever use, Windows Vista)

I listened to a podcast earlier today that said more or less the same thing. 98 was what 95 should have been. XP was what 2000 should have been. Windows 7 is going to be what Vista was supposed to be: a shiny abomination. I mean, that's what the podcasters made it sound like; I've never used Vista, and I'm pretty sure I'm not going to use anything other than Linux as soon as I can do away with XP. They say there'll be a feature so that you can type things like "ram" into the start button and have it tell you what your own hardware is. And more fine tuned RunAs control so can download hentai games on bittorrent and not worry about being rooted. "That'll be another $500 kthx." The podcast, incidentally, was called "Hanselminutes".

I really hope so... I'm a bit tired of XP. EDIT: I mean "Windows "

I use windows vista-based Windows 2k8 server and don't have much complaints so far. Ubuntu on my laptop gives me so much more troubles... I still can't configure ad-hoc wifi connection so that I could connect my DS to internet like I do in windows. And wine does not allow me to change codepage when I have english locale (I want wine applications to show russian text corectly, it's not that much, is it?). Google can't help Looks like I suck at googling for help but for now ubuntu is much more of hassle than 2k8 is.

You could actually do that in Windows?? Ubuntu is good, but maybe not for everything.

Ubuntu ran like a dream, unless I wanted to watch any sort of video file. The 'beta' that's floating around is more like a concept demo - it's Vista with a new taskbar and a feedback button on every titlebar, and not much more to speak of than that. I don't know why people are all up in arms about it one way or another - it's not as though this is indicative of the final product. Or at least, we hope it's not.

There's something called the Nintendo Wi-Fi Adapter that was discontinued over a year ago.

I came into this thread expecting lots of "Who cares, Windows sucks, Linux forever lol". I was not disappointed. By the way, pretty much everybody realizes Windows Vista was the new Windows Me. And give Windows 7 a break -- like Raiscan said, it's far from the final product.

XP was what 2000 should have been.
Well, if you look at the NT order, Windows 2000 is NT5, and Windows XP is NT5.1. Vista is NT6. This new OS is NT7. So calling XP "what 2000" should have been is like saying that XP SP2 is what XP SP1 should have been. I don't think it's a good comparison. As for Vista, I tried it once and it just seemed really awkward compared to 2000/XP, which I use primarily and like them (I use XP now on my personal computers). There was something that was off, but I can't really explain what. It'll be interesting to see what Windows 7 (I'm wondering if they will call it "Mojave") will be like.

As an aside, putting Win2k in the same class as XP isn't fair - it wasn't designed for the home user in the first place. That said, it's still a very stable platform, even if one that didn't have 9x compatibility in mind.

Yes I could. And it still works as I have dual boot. Can't make it work on Ubuntu - DS can see wifi network, but no internet.

Windows 7 will be an upgraded Vista. That will remove all the hardware problem they had at launch because not much have changed. Windows 7 will really be what Vista should have been because there's no major new feature. Windows Vista changed a lot between XP and that had caused a lot of problem. 7 will be like Vista. So I do not expect a lot of compatibility problem. It won't be a lot faster than Vista. But they managed to make a version to run on Netbook. I don't know what kind of netbook have been used. But I know that some of them run Ubuntu or a special trimmed version of Windows XP.

Actually, I distinctly remember the upgrade from 98 to XP was more of an issue, since everything was moved to the NT stream of Windows. I recall many issues with drivers and programs acting very strangely. A similar thing happened, but with different reasons; alot of people were moving to 64-bit which Vista required signed drivers at the kernel level. There is also the problem of UAC causing apps to freak out when they didn't have the high permissions they had expected. Also, 32-bit drivers can't be used on 64-bit Vista as far as I know..

I ran 64-bit Vista Ultimate for a while and I had serious problems getting some of my devices to work properly.

I have both 32 bit XP and 64 bit Vista on this computer. And everything runs faster on XP(except some directx10 games like Bioshock)

My current Vista-machine runs everything better than my old 98-machine, so I don't really have any reason to complain. :P And as far as Windows 7 is concerned, I desperately want to try out the new version of Paint just for the interface.
