Released by Capcom in 2000 as a sequel to the original strider based on Striders Marvel vs. Capcom appearance. Once more you must kill Grandmaster Meio armed only with an insanely badass sword and your godlike ninja skills.

Comments

You may notice I take damage a few times in the run, twice in lv 1 and twice in lv 5. As near as I can tell this is due to an emulation bug. It doesn't happen on the original hardware or even other emulators, just pcxs and appears to be unavoidable. I don't know what causes three of the hits I take but the first damage I take in lv 5 happens at the same time solo's energy saw blades hit a wall so some how the game thinks when the blades hit something I should take damage. This next segment is about movement so skip it if you've played the game.
Walking
press forward or back
slowest movement never used when speed is an issue
Run
forward, forward or back, back
Much faster then walking and also makes jumps move much father horizontally. When you stop running or run into a wall Hiryu will go into a sliding animation that you can't change directions during making running a poor choice of movement if you need to turn around quickly.
Climbing
run into a wall or ceiling in the air
The fastest way to climb a wall is to jump three frames before you touch it, it will cause you to jump before you land on the wall. If on a wall you can press away from the wall to do a hassou jump. It's basicly a quick air dash horizontally and slightly up. You can cancel out of a hassou jump with a midi-giri but not with a double jump. There is no quick way to move along a ceiling so I try to avoid it whenever possible.
Slide
press down and jump when on the ground
Not as fast as running and you can't change directions or do a normal jump out of it so it's nearly useless. You can however cancel it with a strange backwards jump by pressing back and jump in a slide. The jump has very low vertical movement and decent speed but you can't double jump, midi-giri, or even change directions during it so it's nearly useless. Still it's a quick way change directions.

So this thing is basically a crissagrim. It can be used anytime (except a few frames before landing) without slowing you down. If used when standing or ducking it will slash forward, up, and down.
midi-giri
down, up, slash (can only be used in the air)
This is basically a 360° slash that does more damage then a normal slash so most of the boss fights are about using this over and over as quickly as possible. When used it slows down your movement almost completely. If to many sprites are on screen sometimes it will not show the slashes but it will still do damage. You can only midi-giri once per jump but if you jump at the first possible frame before landing you won't be able to do it. If this move is used as soon as possible before hitting a wall/ground/ceiling the slashes will continue and still do damage but it will cancel Hiryu's animation so this is a way to do the midi-giri without going through the full animation. The quickest way to do repeated midi-giri are attached to a flat wall.
There are two useful items
Boost
Activating boost causes all of your normal attacks to create a homing projectile increases the damage done by each slash and causes massive lagg. The arcade the game was designed for is basically just a psx with twice the ram and the psx version was not changed from the arcade. If boost is activated in an already laggy section then expect the game to play at around 15 fps.
Power up
Increases the range and damage of your attacks and gives Hiryu a purple aura but goes away if hit.

Stage 1

Fairly straight forward, the solo fights are ugly but the rest seems optimized. You only need to do one of the first 3 stages. I tested all three out and this was the fastest.

Stage 4

The windy sections are a pain due to the huge lagg and the awkward jumps it causes.

Stage 5

The solo fight at the start is ugly. The gravity changing part is a pain, I have to stop three times to avoid enemies. Hien fight is a pain, if your wondering why I pause alot it's because Hien is invincible most of the time when on the ground. If you attack he goes into a blocking animation. Also hitting with a midi-giri is harder because of the moving stage. He takes much more damage when in the middle of his dashing attack witch is why I hit him with a double midi-giri there.

Other comments

I am sure some frames can be shaved of this run but I am not going to bother with it until there is a better emulated version

Truncated: I fixed some of your markup for you. You can use three percentage signs to force a new line. It is also possible for you to edit your submission after you have sent it, to fix any mistakes you have made.
Anyway, I liked this. Very high action to length ratio. I will accept it. Didn't know there was another Strider 2 for PSX also, I had only seen the Mega Drive Strider 2 (which is a completely different game).

Not too sure how I feel about a run that takes damage through an emulation bug (I've never played the game so I don't know how much time avoiding it would save), but I'll leave that for others to bicker over. In any case I found this to be an entertaining and fast paced run and never saw any huge flaws in the execution. Decent ratings from me 7.9/7.8

Ninja walksruns right for justice! Certainly flashy and the game appears to be well-run, but I found the bosses to be rather samey and of course the enemies all get ignored as they should be. In short, I don't really feel like there's a lot of substance here. Ehh, weak yes vote. The addition of the emulator error (assuming that's what it is) makes judging the game on technical grounds more or less impossible.

I think taking the damage wastes around 6 sec witch is a big deal in a run this short but still not as bad as the pause glich in Ocarina of Time. I stopped running this when I couldn't get past the first solo fight without taking damage but decided I wanted to watch this run to much to give up on it. You know, this is the kind of nearly-non-stop action that I was looking for in games like Spider-man 3 and Mischief Makers. Basically, it's Gunstar Super Heroes with all the boring stuff cut out. Great game, and a great TAS. 8.5 for entertainment.

I agree it's a good choice, and makes for an entertaining TAS; 7.6/8.0. However, I disagree with your statement moozooh. You have managed to cite this game as superior than three games that I myself have worked on. Thanks for the vote of confidence there buddy.

Tough luck. :) Don't blame me for your game choices, though; you know I prefer seeing entertainment to length ratio very high in any TAS, regardless of my possible warm feelings toward the game, the author, or anything else like that.

Personally, this looks like the kind of game I would get tired of pretty quickly. It looks like a game I would enjoy for about 5 minutes and then go "Wait, is the game gonna be like that the entire time?" To support Comicalflop, I totally disagree that this game is superior to Mischief Makers. They're different in too many ways to even compare them together. This game is the same thing right to the end (hack and slash), while Mischief Makers is more of a platformer. Getting back to this game though, I enjoyed the TAS, but thank God it didn't last any longer than that. I would have been bored if that was the case. But for a 10 minutes TAS, it's pretty good. I enjoyed it, and technical quality seems high. Good job!

Not bad. Another solid entry for the growing list of Ninja Games. All I'd have to say for future versions is that they include the two skipped levels. They in and of themselves were pretty sweet and it would show off more of the game. Last time I played this, I seem to recall a level in a mountain forest. However it wasn't in any of the videos. I wonder what's up with that. Either way, I approve. Edit: It seems Halamantariel and I are taking different platforms. ;P

I'm not attacking Comicalflop, and thus not sure why you even need to support him in the first place. Also, are you arguing the entertainment value I derive from different games? Just don't. Lastly, the notion of Mischief Makers as "more of a platformer" is rather ironic in the light of the amount of time actually spent interacting with, you know, platforms (rather than just sliding right, flying over obstacles altogether, or doing some unrelated things).

Wow, way to destroy one of the hardest games to clear in one credit (or one life, they're the same thing in this game). Anyone who hasn't played the game should try playing through stage 5 once. This run is way more impressive when you understand how ridiculous it is to navigate through the gravity-switching corridor, going through the boss gauntlet all without getting hit. Especially the final boss, I hate using the word cheap, but that's what he is. :( 9 Entertainment (I like hyper, fast-paced action games, even if you only do one thing throughout the entire game :P) 8 Technical Three questions: -I thought the command for midi-giri was down, up+slash? At least, that's what I always did. -How did you move while doing a midi-giri during the Hien fight? Is it because the dragon is moving? I'm also wondering you dodged the dragon's attack. -The final boss did its little purple flames attacks (the ones that appear around the sides of his head), but they didn't track you. Why not? Anyways two thumbs up. I do it all the time in the run. all you need to do is do a midi-giri just before hitting a wall/ground/ceiling. You need to be headed at a decent speed so you can't just do this repeatedly unless the ground is moving at you like in the last boss.

No Idea, I didn't even notice them when I did the run. I can confirm that they will can damage you but they always seem to go up, could be an emulation error but the other attacks track me fine.

You also need a clear game of the gen strider 1 that comes with it on your memory file, It doesn't unlock stage four like 1-3 tho A Hien run should be next, he doesn't get a stage select and has to play the levels in order. Very entertaining. I have never seen nor heard of this game before but having watched its gameplay it's definitely an excellent blend of 2D and 3D elements. As for the movie, you've got slick maneuvering through the levels and complete annihilation of everything in your path. Quite short for a PSX game but the action just doesn't stop. I dig it. Sega should do the next Sonic game like this.
