Intro
Hello everyone. This is my first full-game TAS, so I decided to try my hand at Star Fox 64. I chose this game because I really liked playing it when I was younger, and I always wondered how good you could get at this game. When I saw that there was no movie for it, I immediately thought: "I could do this!" I feel really good about this run because it shows the raw game pushed to the limits without any special glitches or cheats. I hope everyone enjoys my run and that more are made in the future.

The Game
Star Fox 64 is the supposed "remake" or sequel of the original Star Fox for the SNES. You play as Fox McCloud and basically fly around in an "Arwing" shooting down enemies. You have 3 friends who accompany you on your voyages adding their "helpful" advice such as doing a barrel roll. You encounter team Star Wolf, Star Fox's rivals and many other foes. The final boss is Andross, a giant monkey head with floating hands. When defeated, he turns into mechanical set of eyes and a brain. (Not unlike Mother Brain)
This movie was made over about a week long period. The hardest part to making this movie was probably getting all the angles and aiming perfect. Many will enjoy the results because it shows this game played to the highest degree.

Submissions need to be recorded from a power on with cleared SRAM; under no circumstance can submissions be recorded from a savestate, as per the rules. Mupen doesn't support start from SRAM options. You can however, post this .m64 in the starfox 64 thread and add the savestate file as well; but as it stands, it can't be in the workbench.

Even in cases which the sram is needed to unlock the hardest difficult level, being the case with Starfox 64? The savestate issue seems just a workaround to solve Mupen limitations. If it's possible, someone could tale a look at the savestate to see if it's really legit. Then again, I haven't watched the game, and I won't do it until a encode appears. Maybe the "expert" mode isn't even used in the movie at all. And the "difficult" path have its moments, but have the worst stage in the game (Aquas), and misses a lot of TASable stages (like the sun, I don't really remember its name)
My first language is not English, so please excuse myself if I write something wrong. I'll do my best do write as cleary as I can, so cope with me here =) (ノಥ益ಥ)ノ

I don't think anyone will accept this for one reason: it's slower than the console run

This run has OPENED my EYES! I never knew Mother Brain disguised herself (himself? itself? transgendered self?) as a robotic monkey! Charge shots? Fuck'em, they're not entertaining by any means; even if you get +infinity hits with one! And Star Fox was on the NES originally, and this is just the remake? Whoa. My world is crumbling around me...and I think I'm liking it. Wait a minute...
- Fastest possible time - Hardest path
T I M E P A R A D O X. You contradicted yourself! You can't achieve the fastest possible time while taking the hardest path! No, don't give me that crap, YOU KNEW WHAT YOU WERE SAYING WHEN YOU WORDED IT. You're only getting a "Meh" for that!

Well, there's the Chrono Trigger New Game + run. I personally think it'd be reasonable in theory to start from a saved game for the sole purpose of unlocking the hardest difficulty (assuming harder difficulty = more entertaining, as is usually the case). But yes, your point about Mupen not supporting a "play movie from SRAM" feature stands. However, there's no reason why the route chosen should be all-red-exits, besides, of course, the exit into Venom.

SRAM isn't a savestate. I don't believe that any movies that start from a savestate have actually been accepted, although I may be wrong. Several movies that start from sram have been accepted, although I believe in most cases this is something that's been arranged prior to the submission.

Most (all?) of these movies also had verification files that generated the needed SRAM, be it a published run or a separate movie.

I can't find a Starfox 64 rom because all of them are "protected by the ESA." Can someone provide me with one?

I think you should know better than to ask for ROMs...

Yeah, I was referring to SRAM start only, not savestate start.

Right. This would need to be provided for Star Fox 64 (should be trivial to do for a TAS, it's just all the medals you need, right?)

You do know SDA has weird conventions for timing, right?

Not that weird. Besides, are you REALLY gonna account for 4 minutes in difference between this and the Redline run (which this is)? I think not. I'll admit I haven't watched this yet, but I'm already looking negatively on it. I'll try to watch with a clear and open mind later.

SDA timing is from when you gain control of the character, until you lose control of the character at the end. It takes about 30 seconds to gain control of the character, and the end should be exactly the same, so it's still slower.

As pointed out with the above sarcasm, StarFox 64 is a sequel (not a remake) to the original StarFox, which was on SNES (not NES). You may want to correct that. I'll watch the movie in a bit, need to reconfigure everything on my desktop.

Let me know how that goes, you know, with the whole "being able to watch it" deal. Especially considering the movie was recorded with a savestate that was not provided.

When you record from power on, mupen needs to let the ROM reload, so that frame #1 of the .m64 starts at frame #1 in the game. I found that out the hard way years ago. Try again, and if you still can't get it, PM me and I can send you a .m64 that will work, and I can edit in your name and everything. If you try a recording from snapshot, it will create one at the beginning. You must still have it somewhere, otherwise you'd never be able to watch the movie yourself to check progress. If you didn't mean fastest possible speed, did you mean highest score?

I think he didn't mean highest speed to beat the game, but highest speed to beat the hardest route in the game (Red Line). If you wanted to beat the fastest route, you'd be on a completely different path (starting with beating a different boss in Corneria, then taking the warp route in the Asteroid Belt. One thing I just noticed on the ROM title which could be the problem - [f1]? So I take it this isn't the good dump (which would be [!])? Edit: Yeah, it's a "Fixed" ROM, according to the f1 code. Wonder how it's "fixed"?

i kill a lot of enemies, but only use 3 charge shots, one one corneria, zoness, and andross eyes, so my total isnt as high because i get no bonuses for "multi-kills" i also boost by some enemies before they crash and don't get points. :( my run is mainly for entertainment and fast speed for the route, not maximum points and stuff also, where should i upload the savestate to? edit:

yeah, something's wrong with the rom and starting from the start of the emulation, maybe its just mine, but i got it from the same site where i get my other roms which are fine i also noticed that if you speed the game up, but then slow it down to regular speed at certain places, the characters voices stay at a higher pitch and i couldnt find a way to reverse it. maybe its my audio plugin idk

Well, I'm curious as to why you used one in the first place? Anyways, if you really want us to see it, you'll have to post it. Someplace like Mediafire of whatever. Otherwise, all we see is this:
