I see alot of people say it's "easier" and "faster" to get shiny pokemon in Pokemon Emerald. For those of you that don't know, a shiny pokemon is merely a different colored version of it. It *usually* has a 1/8192 chance of appearing, according to most sites. I figure to ask you guys (I dunno any ROM hackers) about if there's any difference between Emerald's shiny formula, and the one in Ruby/Sapphire/etc.

It appears as if it's 1/8192 in all of the games: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Shiny#Generations_III_and_IV

How odd. It appears most people choose to believe in myths, then... Although that Masuda method was an interesting read - there's alot of pokemon I would love to have shiny in Diamond/Pearl/Platinum.

It comes from the desire to justify their buying of a third version of the game. XD Also, if you mash up+A when catching a pkmn the chances for it to be caught are higher because all of that effort has to go somewhere! :X

Actually, it's down+B (it was down + one of the buttons. I'm not sure which, haven't played R/B lately. Last time I did like a year ago, I consistently caught Mewtwo with it with just a Poke Ball (full health, etc)). And that was only in Red/Blue. It's a confirmed trick, provided you get the timing right (has to be the first frame the poke ball appears), any pokeball will be a master ball. From what I've observed, certain natures and certain shinies will appear at different frames of the game, if this is true, I can safely say all these people getting "100% legit" shinies via these tricks are ARed.

The workings of Emeralds RNG (Random Number Generator) were found and posted here. Catching shinies will be in there somewhere if you look I bet.

You mean the trick is frame manipulation? Looks like I won't be capable of doing it. >.> I thought it might be something actually... feasible on a real game.

All you need to do is press A on a specific frame, for the most part. It isnt that hard to do at all, and it is extremely feasible for the real games. As a mod at Smogon, I'm privy to the ins and outs of the Emerald RNG, and it has been well known for quite some time the Emerald RNG was easy to manipulate, it has only been within the last half a year that the knowledge was discovered and then shared with the community at large. I'd be more than happy to assist you if you want to capture or breed your own shinies.

Knowing exactly which frame(s) I'm on in a real game is... hard, to say the least. I honestly would consider using an emulator for this form of thing if it wasn't for the fact that I can't trade it to a legit game, thereby defeating the purpose. (and it's cheating like that, IMO) Also, moderating a site such as Smogon must be hard, props to you for not losing your sanity.

What sanity? :-) Also it is possible to use an emulator and trade off to a cart, there are users who do this already for some of the much later frame requirements (like some spreads can require you to wait for 3 days after a reset, so an emulator helps there). Honestly, look at the Emerald thread, and if you need some specific help you can always come to the Smogon IRC channel. It seems a lot to take in at first, but once you get the hang of it it is really quite simple. There are programs to aid finding the right spread as well, so you dont have to scroll through huge spreadsheets any more.

Wait - how in the heck can a real Emerald trade with an emulated one?

Well, maybe that is too loose of a description. You actually can make use of a flashcart to 'trade' the Pokemon's save data between an emulator and the real thing. There are tools to assist this process as well, although I must admit I dont understand this process as well as I should. Long story short - emulators can be used if you have the right equipment and knowhow. Again, that information should be easy to come by, but I'd start with familiarising yourself with the process first before making things too complicated :-)

IMO you dump the SRAM from the real Emerald, then use it along with the SRAM from the emulator in a two-emulator trading setup, and finally return that SRAM back to the real cart; then again AFAIK dumping devices usually only dump the ROMs, not the SRAMs.

How would I even extract my ROM/SRAM to begin with?

There are devices for doing that; that's all I will say and that's probably the most I can say here without breaking the rules.

The only possible way I can think of is getting my PC to somehow read the cartidges data...? (via USB, I'd assume)

IIRC there are devices that have a cartridge-reader on one end and a USB or serial connector on the other end: http://justfuckinggoogleit.com/

Regarding cartridge SRAM swaps, I have an M3 DS real card for the DS, and managed to port my completed n+ save file from the DS and use it on the DesMuMe emulator. I did this after reading this topic, to see if it was possible. It is, and it's really easy to do as well.

There's a cheaper (and educative) way, but you'll need a game link cable and a printer port. http://chishm.drunkencoders.com/SendSave/index.html

Either way, you're going to need to buy some hardware. While you're doing this however, you could probably find a useful SRAM state on the internet somewhere, with 100% caught pokemon...

And not a single one of those pokemon would be legit. :)

Anyway, I didn't need to buy anything for that... I had a broken link cable, and I got the old printer cable from a friend. I just had to solder them together. He will need to buy something only if he has only a DS and no GBA.

Wow, I thought I was l33t when I hacked up a broken USB-A cable so the wires would fit into a USB header-end and then I could install my internal card-reader with an internal USB port because my motherboard had no USB headers!

So I'd have to rely on frame manipulation for a shiny...? :/
