For those of you who like a challenge (who doesn't), there's a Mario flash game which features a Japanense like cat. The stages are simalar looking to the first 4 levels in SMB1 and contain many nasty unavoidable beginers traps, which exploit what people might know about the orginal game. I've completed the game about 4 times, but it still takes me in excess of 20+ deaths to do so. Interestingly in the last level I found 2 ways to get across the bridge where Bowser (equivalant) is. Sadly it ends in death, even if you don't grab the axe and let the enemy cat do it. You're left bouncing on it's head with a screen lock preventing you from going any further. Although there is actually a way of going down the area 51 pipe. It was not to my surprise what the outcome ended up being.

Is it Syobon? [EDIT] Yes, this is Syobon Action. For the record, it's the game that inspired I Wanna Be The Guy. There's a no-death speedrun of it on YT.

Turns out it's not an all-evil game: At 2:04 the game autocorrects a short jump in a manner characteristic to many games, but not SMB.

The most obvious ways of getting across end in death. IIRC, you have to set up a series of events near the end. I recall something about springing on the ceiling, and getting one enemy to take out another.

http://www.mediafire.com/?jd4yzwjymyy This is the longer and more difficult version. Beat it with 35 deaths after a bit of practice. There is already a thread about it on here.

I thought Owata holds that distinction.
A hundred years from now, they will gaze upon my work and marvel at my skills but never know my name. And that will be good enough for me.

Oh, forgot about that one. Well, they both are of the same breed, and both came out before IWBTG.

Ferret is correct. IWBTG was inspired by Owata Jinsei Bouken, not Syobon Action.

I just created a new hard flash game playable for free on my website: http://marie-gen.ca - This game is like Syobon Action, where you are a small guy that must travel through the hell zones for killing the evil master. You will find many traps, power ups or power downs. Some power downs can give you bonus points at the end of the level. There are always a clue for finishing each level. A top 100 hi-score will be added soon. A preview of my game is available here: (please leave a comment here) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wQFVMGtRyE

I've already beaten it. Hellishly difficult indeed, but far from impossible.

A couple of things: 1. The audio after a bit seems to not stop and restart, but plays another set of music on top of itself. This gets annoying really quick. 2. I think you mean "Top 100 will be LISTED here." not Listened.
Taking over the world, one game at a time. Currently TASing: Nothing

That was one crazily difficult game, especially level 1-4. I probably lost over 400 lives on just that level. You had some creative power-ups and power-downs, especially since the former were sometimes dangerous and the latter were sometimes helpful. Nice (but annoying) level design, and the bosses were interesting, too.

After having played Syobon Action for hours and hours, I was so annoyed by the way too similar design of 1-1 and those problems with the audio that I had to stop playing, sorry. I'm sure you did a good job on the game generally speaking though. xD

I'm always amazed how it's possible that a re-creation of a game written for a 1.8MHz CPU does not run at full speed on a machine that's more than a thousand times faster.
