That's only an emulator in an emulator. :P But I bet it runs at full speed since DOSBox is pretty fast and VPC is (probably) virtualized.

Bonus points: Launch VBA and run the SMS (or any other) emulator from within that one. 4!

Because adding layers of meta is cool.

I fail to see the logic. Arbitrarily adding layers of stupid is stupid.

FODA: not that I'm aware of, but Windows and Linux can both run VirtualBox, so you could have a VM inside a VM inside a VM...

That's even more awesome than the time I used two Game Genies at once on an NES game. Awesomely enough, it actually did let me use six codes.

What could be the longest set of emulators which could be run in this way, excluding recursion (ie. emulator X in system A runs emulator Y in system B, which runs system A), which could actually be runnable (at least in theory)?

You'll have to stick to standard computer emulators for the most part, since consoles don't generally have emulators written for them. The DS is a notable exception, so your final steps would probably involve a computer emulating a DS emulating a SNES. Is there a working Dreamcast emulator? Because IIRC you could run Linux on it. So, say, OSX running Dreamcast emulator running Linux running WINE to emulate Windows (I don't care about the name; it's emulating the Windows system calls, that's close enough for me) emulating a DS emulating a SNES. That's 4 layers of emulation, which seems small, but banning recursion hurts a lot; there just aren't that many emulators available for non-general-purposoe systems.

Run Linux inside VirtualBox on a Mac, using Wine to run UAE where you execute ShapeShifter to emulate an old M680x0 macintosh computer. Port DOSBox to that, run an NES emulator inside. Mac -> Linux -> Windows -> Amiga -> 680x0-Mac -> DOS -> NES 7 systems, if you're stupid enough to own an actual apple computer. You might be able to fit in a *BSD (if that counts) or Atari (not sure about the emu situation).

Now why'd you have to go and say that? Please try and leave fanboyisms and flamewar starters out of an (thusfar) interesting thread.

For all I know the troper who made that screenshot (I got it from TVtropes) could have been using a Mac with Parallels running Windows 7, but then again if he or she were, it would have been cooler to see the Snow Leopard background also. BTW it is possible to run Linux on Windows in VMWare, Qemu, or even VirtualPC.

I totally agree. Such a provocative (and even insulting) comment was totally uncalled for and completely out of place.
