Well it is an epic day! We have Virtual Boy rerecording! To watch the movie you need the VBjin emulator.

The platform

Virtual Boy Wario Land is one of the few releases for the Virtual Boy platform. Arguably Nintendo's biggest flop the Virtual Boy sold it as a "Virtual reality" experience using goggles that sent separate video streams to each eye to create a parallax effect. Unfortunately the seizure inducing red monochrome, the awkward interface, and lack of a virtual reality experience resulted in a less than positve consumer response

The game & movie

Virtual Boy Wario Land was a platformer released for the Virtual Boy system in 1995. The main objective of the game is to traverse the 14 levels. Each level has a key you must find in order to open up the next level. There are treasures hidden along the way. This TASes gets no treasures and thus achieves the "bad ending".
This game offers a rich variety of movements and power-ups that give great TASing possibilities.
Significant Moves:
  • Running using the L or R buttons: the same speed as Barging
  • Barging: A nice move that is faster than walking, but causes Wario to bounce off walls and enemies
  • Bull Barging: With the bull upgrade, barging is significantly faster
  • Flying: Slow speed but very useful
  • Fly bull barging: When you have the bull and eagle upgrades, you can fly at bull barging speed, very useful
Tricks:
  • Alternating L and R quickly stops momentum, this can be used for quick turn arounds
  • While Bull charge flying, tapping the jump button allows him to do a jumping bull charge. This can be exploited to do a double jump and reach areas that shouldn't be possible (such as getting the key early in Level 13).
  • Faster swimming - This makes the swimming level look drunk. When swimming, Wario has a pushing forward, pulling back pattern. Hitting into things at the peak of the forward momentum can cancel out the pulling back momentum. The result is drunk, but it saves time. Eh, I hope that made sense.
Frame rule: Level 13 is the biggest frame rule in TAS history, 1500 frames! That is the interval that the clock is on that gives the key. I get there about 600 frames into the frame rule and thus have 900 to kill. The result is rather unelegant time killing.

I guess the implication is that it would be a bit weird to have a whole category on the site with one or two runs in it, compared say to the huge array of nes runs available. But it's silly, because then you'd have to reject this run, and there's nothing wrong with the run.

A little late for that issue... since... This has already been this way for almost an entire year.

Awesome run! Though I also want a 2D encode. I'm way too lazy to go get my 3D glasses. I swear, my eyes are STRAINED, and I didn't watch it very long at all.

For the record, the 3D glasses are worth it. It is about 200% more awesome with them than a plain old 2d encode.

I've been dutifully encoding this again for the past few days. Why? For the chance to have it on YouTube... in EPIC 1080p 3D! (Not done HDifying yet at time of post, but it should be done in the next couple of days.

Man, I gotta make me a pair of glasses for this. I had to use the monochrome encode, load it into two players, then zoom each screen and position them correctly so I could do the cross-eyed method and get the proper look (youtube version's framerate was too low, caused more eyestrain than normal). Even then after getting both players sync'd the effect wasn't the best (since the "screen" was so small). Other than that, it was a pretty tight run. It'll be interesting to see other titles from VBoy destroyed.

You are doing it the hard way. Switch the videos and then put a piece of paper between the two videos, perpendicular to the screen, and then put your nose on the other edge. This way your left eye will only see the left video and not be confused by the right video, and vice-versa. Then look towards the distance until both videos coincide.

Can we get some kind of heads up as to which version of the movie we are downloading? I can't tell which is R/B and which is grayscale.

Now that this published, can we expect a 100% run in the not too distant future?

Given how there aren't many other VBoy games, I wouldn't be too surprised.

This is an amazing TAS. I was filled with glee watching this with anaglyph 3d glasses on. I bought a Virtual Boy when they were marked down in price in Blockbuster all those years ago and this game was the good one. If anyone needs 3d glasses to truly enjoy the video, you can get a free pair of them by mailing an envelope to a certain address. I did this to try out the version of 3d Quake. Instructions are here: http://www.rainbowsymphony.com/freestuff.html

Hello, first great 3D movie. I have a question. The YouTube movie is great for my red/green glasses, better then the other red/blue Version, because I have no red/blue glasses. I have download the Youtube parts as flv videos, but then I have 2 black white screens. Is there a way, to get the red/green moviescreen again with the downloaded flv-files? I use VLC-Player to play the flv files. Or will this work only on YouTube? Will there be a red/green movie upload here?

I am considering doing an all treasures run at some point in the near future.

Youtube is applying the red/green thing in post production, so you'd need some kind of program that tries to emulate it.

Great run, but you missed something that could've increased the time by quite a bit. The bull hat is obtainable by getting an onion if your already big, so the first few levels could've been run faster (the 2nd set of blocks you come across in the 1st level has an onion in it I believe). The specific Bull Hat upgrade is mainly for when your small.

Okay, I just finished this interesting script for watching Virtual Boy runs. When I first watched this run, I thought the whole 3D Glasses effect was pretty neat. I realize though that not everyone has access to 3D glasses (myself included, aside from the pair that ironically came from my VB Nintendo Power magazine, but I couldn't bother to fish it out), but I remembered about these stereo gifs that I've seen online before. So I thought "Hey, why don't I make an AVISynth script that alternates the view like in the gifs?". ..It took me the past three days ripping my hair out to get to work, but its finally finished! Here's a proof of concept video of the first level of this run using the filter. http://www.mediafire.com/?qjyc35mrjmc And here's the script for people that are interested. source=ConvertToRGB(ffdshow_source()) ScriptClip(""" s=current_frame x=7 #number of frames before view switch a=float(Ceil(s/x)) b=float(a/2) b==int(b) ? ConvertToYV12(ShowRed(source)) : ConvertToYV12(ShowBlue(source)) """) I'm sure that it isn't optimal..I know some programming, but converting my knowledge of C into AVIScript proved to be exceedingly frustrating. Anyway, let me know what you guys think! I'm going to start working on an improvement to this script, which will intermediate the frames to give the "jerking" transition a smoother look. Wish me luck.. PS. I had a semi-humorous story posted before I revised everything..let's just say out of my tiredness and confusion I thought the published "monochrome video" had this filter already in place. :P

@SatoshiLyish: I like your effort, but I don't feel it's working. For a still scene with 2 frames it works fine, but in a movie it just looks as if everything is "jiggling" and it doesn't give me a 3D-effect at all.

You can still watch it on youtube on crosseyed mode, just choose it from the drop down list.

The best solution would be to alternate every frame, but to use both sets of frames for 120fps video. Too bad the average monitor isn't going to be able to display video that quickly.

Seems you are right. I just improved level 1 bv 415 frames, so this is quite a significant improvement to be made. I guess I am working on a v2 now.
