So make that a forbidden move in the run. I wonder if it's possible to max out the score in the game without performing the trick with the turtle and without dying.

That seems impossible.

I wouldn't be so sure of this... just because of the turtle shell (waiting) trick. It's a turtle shell trick. If you jump on a turtle and hit the turtle shell the frame it gets up, you will get 8000pts. If you did this on every turtle in the game you could maybe max it. However, that wouldn't be all too entertaining. With unlimited lives you could easily do it as well, but that would get boring fast.

I think maximun score isn't a problem, but i don't do this. I only run through all levels, ok. this is what I mean with 100%.

[/size]
Please read this again Taseditor. Also they weren't talking to you specifically when they were discussing maxing out score. They were just talking.... Good luck with your run though! I watched the run you've posted on youtube and it's pretty good! :)

Good luck with your run. SMB is one of the hardest games to improve, because many people have already TASed it many times. You said that you're already in World 2 -- are you faster than HappyLee at this point? (also, is geTASt a word?)

He aimed for getting everything that is possible to take as fast as he can. He did keep a close eye on score, which surely could've been higher, but still.

Hey, that's pretty cool! I suppose you could set more rules, like having to break every brick or glean as many points from every enemy as possible, but then the run wouldn't be nearly so speedy. And getting all the items with as few bricks broken as possible is probably cooler than spending time every screen just breaking them all anyway.

That's a good run aiming for high-score. Thanks for sharing! You could raise the score even more by breaking blocks and getting fireworks.

I'm not faster than HappyLee. I still practice TASing. Today I've looking the TAS-editor on FCEUX closer, but I use it on my next TAS first.

Alles klar. I understand now. When you announced a new run, I thought you wanted to break a record; I misunderstood you. If you want to improve your TASes, you can share your WIPs (work in progress) here, so that the people here can help you.

I disagree. High-score and all-items aren't good aims, for example, you won't be able to break every brick that's able to break, because some is hiding in the pipe, you have to choose 1 way to play. For many reasons, a 100% run in SMB isn't entertaining I think, it would be long and boring, I bet you can't even finish this mission in 1 hour. I wouldn't like to see movies about this, would you?

Yeah, I suppose a truly obsessive all-kills movie would farm the jumping Cheep-Cheeps, Spinies, and Bullet Bills for as long as possible, rather than just getting the ones that happened to show up as the player was running along.

Just some info The highest score I ever got on one life without abusing the turtle shell was ~1,030,000. It mainly comes from combo-ing enemies with turtle shells, getting 5000pts+fire works on each flagpole, and killing Bowser for 5000pts each time. I don't really like the idea of a high score TAS (at least not for SMB), I guess it is a bit interesting, but you're not going to get more than 1,100,000 or so without abusing some turtle shells for points.

Take the way that gets you more points. I found the posted TAS by Vlass14 to be good, however I'll admit that it got boring after 1 or 2 worlds so maybe it might not be a good idea. What about a playaround category?

For all the seconds that you have left at the end of a level, 1 second=50 points. So, you'd have to be able to break bricks faster than a second for it to count. Obviously, Super Mario Bros Chaos was the best glitchy-run (as far as I know) for SMB. I don't think there's any beating that.

Andrewg_ broucht up an useful PAL-only glitch and since the PAL version seems to be faster than the NTSC version, I wanted to try TASing this game. The PAL-only glitch turned out to be useless since I found out that you can use the flagpole glitch (with Mario stuck in front of it) without a bullet bill or koopa shell. But I can't get any wall glitches to work... http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/528785828/SMB%20PAL%20MUGG.fm2 This would be an alternative strategy: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1656385579/SMB%20PAL%20MUGG%20-%20Kopie.fm2 Used ROM: Super Mario Bros. One thing for sure, this should be a great example of how/why some PAL movies can get on site D

When the block would start to eject you, press left+right for 1 frame. When landing and jumping again, press left+right again, then press right to move towards the flagpole. You might want to study one of the published movies (download fm2, watch with fceux and view the input).

Manchmal. /difficult to explain, watch published TAS frame-by-frame with input display enabled and attempt to copy.. as far as I understand you have to go backward with full speed (40) and do a pixel-precise jump into the upper left corner of the block neath the flagbole. at the correct moment, press left (<-) for one frame, that pulls mario further in. then jump at the correct moment, and it should work. Sometimes. If anything's wrong, please correct me /bäh, viel zu langsam (

This is a plan for an improvement to the warpless TAS (in 2-1). According to this it should be possible... http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1379619203/happylee3-smbwarpless.fm2 I haven't succeeded yet...

well, not quite. I think mugg means this would be a faster method for it... however, I don't think it can work. The situation in 4-2 is slightly different (different kind of block), also it's done on the ground and not from a walljump. I've asked Happylee in the past about this and I think you can only enter a wall if you are moving upwards toward it first.
