I mixed a few styles up together. I just don't know what style is the most popular with most people.
The Only Improvement
Not lowering flags
I once got this idea, and I made it the first time after hundreds of failures. I don't know how it works exactly, but I am sure that you have to somehow get into the block under the pole and then jump up. You may need to steer or NOT to steer to SOME directions when you are inside the block. If you make it, you'll skip the flag-lowering animation.
Note: I didn't use this trick in stage 8-3 otherwise I would have had to decide whether to waste 42 frames in watching three fireworks or not to by wasting 19+ frames somewhere else to miss them....
Special Thanks
Thanks to Phil, genisto and pom for their well-optimized movies that I studied and JXQ for his FCMFix tool.
NesVideoAgent: Hi! I am a robot. I took a few screenshots
of this movie and placed them here.
Oh! I also corrected the ROM name.
You indicated Super Mario Bros. (JU) [!]
I updated it to Super Mario Bros. (JU) [!].nes
adelikat: I guess no movie is unimprovable :P Accepting the movie due to awesomeness, and encoding.
ok, I haven't read all the comments in this thread as of yet, so it might've already been mentioned, but I'll ask anyway:
In your submission text you basically wrote "gets flag animation in 8-3 to avoid fireworks if block trick is used". Now, as opposed to doing this, why didn't you just waste a single frame at some point in the level so that the firework counter wouldn't have gone off, and you thusly could've done the block trick anyway?
Nice run though regardless, I just found this one point a "why?" kind of thing.
Perhaps you missed my point slightly Phil.
If you delay by enough time to avoid the fireworks by a frame or two when doing the trick, wouldn't that work out faster overall than both getting the flag animation to avoid it, or getting the fireworks when doing it?
Or am I misunderstanding, and doing the trick even if you do delay slightly would make it take longer than both avoiding flag animation/fireworks?
taking the flag = 144 timeunits
DOing the trick = 3-4 frames lost = 143 timeunits + fireworks.
Waiting the timeunit for 142 is theoritically bad since you must wait 22-23 frames = More than the 21 frames rule.
In conclusion, tking the flag at 144 is the wiser choice. I know what I am talking since I did tested it myself.
Even after twenty years, people are still discovering timesavers in this game. Mark my words, next year the bar will be lowered to 4:00. ^_~
BTW, I'm confused about something. This movie beat the previous one by only one second. Are you saying that that's all the time this new glitch has managed to shave off? I'd say this run would be slower one without the glitch.
1.4 seconds shaved off of a run that was thought to be perfect is amazing.
If they managed to skip the cutscenes the run would be under 4:00, other than that, it's not happening.

Without this glitch, this run would be exactly as long as the previous one.

I think that's unlikely (but by no means impossible) because the old run had been standing for 2 years when this came in. I imagine there might be a couple minor improvements left, but major bugs could take a while before they're discovered.
Now, here's a very nitpicky thing, but one that bugs me big-time. Almost all SMB1 runs start 1-1 by jumping to hit the first coin block, then jumping on the Goomba to kill it. This opening has become way too bland for me. I would prefer it if future runs did something a bit different, even if it earned less points. Here's my suggestion: Jump on the first coin block, then jump from there to the high coin block above all the bricks. Then do a flying leap from there to stay above the screen for a while.
Heh. As I read this, I was thinking "I bet he's going to say to jump off the coin block to the higher one" and I was right.
Well hitting the first coin block and then getting that goomba is the toughest thing so that's probably why they do it.

Oh, certainly you can.
You can do a three-frame jump over the goomba at the last possible frame, and you will hit the mushroom questionmark block and not die.
An example of a TAS that did that was supermariobros-timeattack-mana.avi .
supermariobros-tasv2-pom.avi hit the upper question mark.
supermariobros-tas-klmz.avi stomped the goomba.
Almost every other SMB TAS saved the goomba and hit the second question mark instead.

You don't have to slow down at all? That's odd.

Someone told me that my name is spelled as "kmlz" in the encoded movie. I haven't downloaded it because I have problems with torrent. However I wonder if this is true.

I see...It's not the first time, and maybe not the last time....

i think the avi should be removed and a new avi should be done with the name fixed. I mean, its not good that the name of the player is spelled wrong in an official avi.
