That was a pretty interesting find. I'm guessing it might also be valid for X, since zero's jump slash gives bosses invulnerability periods also.
Good stuff I say.
Not sure if I've said this before, but you are aware that you can steer your aerial dash up or down in Jet Stingray's bike segment, right? You could shorten the distance you drop between dashes with that. Was there a reason not to use it?
Other than that, looking great so far, especially the things you did in the Mushroom and Stingray fights. Edit: Meant Spider instead of Stingray, oops. Nothing wrong with Stingray but Spider was pretty sick.
Didn't know about steering the bike's air dash up and down. That should save some time.
As for the Web Spider trick, if he is hit before warping to a different location, then when he warps, you can hit him and he has no invincibility. This only works up to 60 frames after the last hit.
Nice!
Is it really faster to take the armor in the train level? It feels like the armor is slower on the ground (takes longer to get into a dash-jump, maybe?) and it only serves to save you from a few hits, as near as I can tell. I assume you took it because its hit-recovery is faster than Zero's?
In the first part of Storm Owl's stage, what triggers moving onto the next stage -- reaching the far-right edge of the stage, or being on the ground at the far-right edge of the stage? It might be the latter, in which case you'd want to land faster.
Pyrel - an open-source rewrite of the Angband roguelike game in Python.
With Zero, probably. He doesn't really have the luxury of offing almost everything in his path with unlagging attacks like X does (hopefully I will be able to progress through that area without slowing down at all). The ride armor has a better hit animation/recovery, and its own invisible HP meter, so it's faster to plow through enemies with it than it would be with zero alone.
The "warp" trigger is getting to the rightmost side of the screen. The higher you are, the less distance you have to warp.
FractalFusion: I just played around with the web spider glitch, and it's definitely abusable by X, at the very least using the nova attack.
I think that the amount of time saved by using this glitch alone would almost make a completely absurd route potentially viable, and would allow to show for all the cool tricks that I otherwise can't use.
Said absurd route is as follows: Web Spider > Storm Owl > Slash Beast > Magma Dragoon > Colonel > Split Mushroom > Frost Walrus > Cyber Peacock > Jet Stingray.
Downside is that I can't take the shortcut in web spiders stage or quick kill two minibosses unless I get the plasma shot instead of the stock shot (although in this path, that might be a viable action), but I can take the shortcut in split mushrooms stage as a result. I'd also have to fight Colonel without his frost tower weakness, and Slash Beast without ground hunter.
I have no idea if it'll end up being faster or slower, but it'd certainly come close to the path already chosen regardless.

I couldn't do more than 3 hits on Colonel at once; that was the best I could do.
Derakon: Atma already answered your questions.
General has no invincibility to first ground slash, in such a way that he takes damage whenever the saber is in him. Combined with SDC, it does 10 damage every 9 frames. It's so fast that doing any damage beforehand with air slash is pointless.
I first saw the trick on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5wK1dQYrzc (not the original, but I forgot where that was).
General is not weak to Shippuuga. I don't know what is.
Two more things:
- First of all, be careful when harvesting damage data from mmhp.net . The numbers are not always accurate, especially in games with non-discretized or poorly discretized health meters. Most of it was taken from testing on the consoles.
- Second, Zero's Z-Saber does different damage for many different actions, including between unenhanced air slash and Kuuenzan. It turns out that Kuuenzan is weaker than unenhanced air slash for some bosses (Split Mushroom and Cyber Peacock are the ones I know) and stronger for others. This means that the Split Mushroom refight will take longer than the first. This also means that I have to reconsider the route.
Impressive, I just finished watching it. I take it that you'll be doing one more version?
Also, your choice, but I would suggest aiming for in stage frame counts as extra loading can come out of nowhere and destroy your comparison.
FractalFusion: I actually knew about Kuuenzan doing less damage against Mushroom, but I didn't know about Peacock. But I don't think you have to reconsider your route for one reason. If you don't collect kuuenzan before Peacock's stage, then you can't destroy the floating yellow orbs, you can only move them, which takes forever.
Some questions:
Does jump slashing with the robot in Slash Beast's stage really waste a lot of time?
Why did you hit Frost Walrus with a jumping slash before Ryuuenjin'ing him? Does it has something to do with the amount of life he has?
I'm guessing you didn't Ryuuenjin then double jump Sigma's cannon form because it's slower than doing low double jumps.
I have more questions, but these are the only ones I can remember off the top of my head.
SDA people: Add this to the pile or 10 or so runs I need to improve :-/
I won't be working on another version for a while.
I noticed the loading screen problem between Storm Owl 1 and Storm Owl 2. I don't know what causes the loading delay, so I'll decide later whether to go for in-stage.
mikwuyma: I'll test Cyber Peacock sometime. I'm pretty sure not having Kuuenzan saves about 6 seconds against the boss. I can't destroy the yellow orbs, but I can try going around them.
Ride armor slash causes the same delay as Zero's air slash.
About Frost Walrus, I did something different. Also, I wanted Frost Walrus to travel the shorter distance (towards the left) after being hit by Ryuenjin, because he stays invincible during the burn-slide animation.
Ryuenjin against Sigma wastes too much time.
I've started making this game's TAS using "X".
I've already done intro stage.
movie file: http://winback.web.fc2.com/mmx4tas/1.pxm
But, I am distressed.
In what order should I go to the stage, and which upgrade parts should I collect?
If anyone has an any idea, please tell me.
sparky, please wait.
We have a faster version of the intro stage.
Rolanmen1 and Mothrayas were also working on X4 using X. But they used the Japanese version.
I need to talk to them first, so that we can talk about it together.

There are mixed opinions between us X4 TASers (me, Rolanmen1 and Atma) about whether we should use the Japanese version (Rockman X4) or the USA version.
The Japanese version has better voice acting (X's American voice acting is, simply put, fucking terrible (he sounds like an 8 year old)), but on the other hand using the USA version would not conflict at all with any region-related rules.
We'd like to hear more opinions about which version to use from the community.
(side note: the rules on which version to use claims that "superior music" would be reason enough for a version change; I assume superior SFX should count as well)

<dwangoAC> This is a TAS (...). Not suitable for all audiences. May cause undesirable side-effects. May contain emulator abuse. Emulator may be abusive. This product contains glitches known to the state of California to cause egg defects.
<Masterjun> I'm just a guy arranging bits in a sequence which could potentially amuse other people looking at these bits
<adelikat> In Oregon Trail, I sacrificed my own family to save time. In Star trek, I killed helpless comrades in escape pods to save time. Here, I kill my allies to save time. I think I need help.
I had started making this TAS because I had thought that no one was making it.
So I stop making this and I'm going to make other game's TAS.
I like Japanese version X's voice more than USA version, too.
I like the way you think, and I also like the concept of an X run. Seeing every boss destroyed in virtually the same way (throughout the whole XPSX series, even) with Zero just doesn't appeal to me personally. :P Looking forward to seeing it in...uhh...well, whenever it happens you can be sure I'll party hard
