Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the arcade game, in 12:15. Except, this isn't titled 'The arcade game' because it was played in arcades, and so it was just TMNT. Its not like a Honda Civic is titled "Honda Civic, The Automobile that Drives on Roads." Anyway, rant over. As this is my first non-shining and non-rpg solo submission in 4 years, it was quite a change to do 4 players at once. However, I had determined that I wanted to do this run since I learned it was playable in FBA. I needed multi-track ability, and that didn't exist in FBA. Lua to the rescue!
note, game version is World. Unfortunately, World is not yet a submission option.
  • No Deaths
  • Takes damage to entertain
  • Plays Four Genetically-altered Humanoid Turtles
  • Used Lua (I think my submissions on this board should have this auto-tagged.)
  • Contains Speed/Entertainment Trade-offs.*

Making the run.

Multi-track scripts work by allowing the author to control each player individually, and then having the script play back movements. While I was able to create the movie doing this, it caused many headaches. All enemies alter their position, attacks, and activities based on all 4 turtles. Thus, modifying the movements of one turtle would cause another turtle's attack to miss, to happen too late, and various unpredictability.
Additionally, there is a bug in FBA's emulation of TMNT. If you load a state during a lag frame, the game freezes, while the music continues. The only way to continue is to restart the movie, which has special problems. Lag only happened in 3 places in the run, once in the sewer, and twice in the technodrome. However, due to this glitch, I almost gave up on the run twice.
Finally, there is a bug in FBA related to a pointer for music playing. When saving a state, this pointer is not saved. This means that anytime you create a savestate, it will only work for that session of FBA, and that playing of the movie. Restarting the movie, as in the lag-bug, eliminates the ability to use that savestate. Thus, I had to fast-forward to where I had been working in the run. I've probably fast-forwarded through big portions this entire movie 50 times, due to the lag bug. The frustration every time these bugs worked together was painful.

The Turtles

All turtles have a special move that can be activated by pressing attack and jump on the same frame. Mike, Don, and Leo all have the exact same special attack. Raphael, on the otherhand, has a unique special move. His rolling kick is the fastest form of movement, however it does 2 damage to the foot clan, unlike the other special moves which do 3. However, since I can move past the foot clan if they are off screen, I often use Raph's attack backwards to try and keep the screen moving forward. This is the reason Raph's kill count ends up way less than the other turtles. Additionally, he can catch-up to the other turtles using this attack.

Level 1: April's Burning Apartment

Things to watch for: A Foot solider getting hit by the big ball. Donatello takes a bullet from Rocksteady.

Level 2: The City Streets

Things to watch for: Hitting of street objects to kill Foot clan. A warp glitch which allows me to move towards the Foot faster. Mike playing around in the Sewer.

Level 3: The Sewer

This is the first time I encountered the awful lag glitch, right at the falling gate. You will notice the run becomes sloppy around that point, due to constant replays of the movie. I'm still happy with how it turned out, given the pain I went through. Also, Baxter Stockman only has 24 HP, and each special attack does 3 damage! Also, this part of the run introduces another annoyance, the Mouser holes. While usually I can push past Foot, if there are 4 or less trailing, at this point, the Mouser holes act like 8 Foot, and therefore I have to wait for 4-6 of them to exit the hole to move past it.

Level 4: The Car Lot

Another fun level where I get to play with the scenery. Watch for: The Car running over a bunch of Foot, Foot smacking into Signs, and explosions everywhere! Also, Bebop and Rocksteady is my favorite boss-battle of all time.

Level 5: The Freeway

Watch for: Riding on cars, and killing guys on motorcycles (way harder than it looks!)

Level 6: RocketSkateboard Auto-scroller

One of the more annoying levels, as the level won't change length based on the number of kills. I attempt to keep it interesting by racking up as many kills as possible.

Level 7: Save Splinter

A pretty generic level, once again the mouser holes slow me down at the beginning. I particularly enjoyed the kills right before the 'over-grown corkscrew.' Also, the boss is the first of the 3 really annoying boss battles. Lieutenant Granitor has 48 HP, and no matter what attack is used, he takes only 1 damage.

Level 8: The Technodrome

I encountered the lag glitch twice in here, once with the moving turrets, and again at the bottom of the elevator. This made me want to scream. Additionally, General Traag had 44 HP, and same 1 HP damage rule. Krang, of course, made things worse by having 60 HP/1 dmg.
Finally, Shredder. Shredder has 192 HP and 16 HP after his helmet comes off, but each special (Raph's included) does 7 damage. This means Shredder effectively requires 30 attacks. Also, Shredder is invincible while he splits, so I try and kill as few of his clones as possible, while maintaining consistent damage on him.
Seriously? 3 damage, then 1 damage, then 7? What were the programmers thinking?!?!?
(* I tagged this run with 4 player, and noted the speed vs. entertainment trade-off, because it is possible to spawn bosses with slightly less HP by having only 1 turtle alive at the time the boss comes in. However, this would require having the run be 4-player-ish-but-only-part-of-the-time. Future versions may want to use that time saver, I chose not to for the run's quality.)

My impression from when I asked for a re-encode of the Rockman L run was that you were going to change your encoding protocol to alleviate the problem. I apologize if I misunderstood.

Now I feel bad. It is a misunderstanding as I would not change my methods due to the space savings I get from doing duplicate frame deletion. I had no idea you misunderstood, so thanks for letting me know under that context. Now that the misunderstanding has been cleared, do you need help in figuring out how to get the streaming version?

Could someone explain to me were all this praise is coming from? I mean 4-player action is cool and all, but the run is mostly spamming what I believe are Special Attacks at the edge of the screen. Now I'm not saying it's anywhere near bad, DarkKobold did a good job and it definitely gets a yes vote from me but the impression I get from the comments is that this is like a gift from god or something >_>. Could this be mostly nostalgia? We don't really have arcade halls here in Sweden and I only played this less than a year ago as the XBLA port.

I'm inclined to agree with Dragonfangs; the run is competent and reasonably interesting, and controlling four players simultaneously is an impressive trick, but it's not zOMGAmazing. That said, I also feel similarly about the various Simpsons games, which I've seen other people rave about. I have to assume it comes down to brainwashing. :p

The Simpsons Arcade game is known for its cheapness and unfairness. While the TNMT machine is also really unfair, it might not be as obvious to people that have not played it. The good thing is that most enemies last only one hit in this game, so it has a better rythm than most arcades of its kind. On the other hand, I think you could have made a more entertaining use of 4 players in this run. Voting yes.

No, I remember how to do it, but thanks for asking. However, I recall the original Rockman L streaming version being incompatible with the PS3, which was why I had to ask for the re-encode; did you ever look into what caused that? And if so, were you able to fix it? (That had been the only one I tried that it happened with.)

Yes, I know how to fix that problem, and I have been doing for a while now. If it wasn't fixed, the Mario VIP runs wouldn't work, would they? =p

That's a good point, but remember, until this topic, I had been under the impression that you'd changed your encoding protocols.

So Raphael, my favorite turtle, was a total chump in this video. All he did was roll and kick OVER AND OVER AND OVER. Other than that it was pretty good so I voted yes.

Now that I finally have a decent internet connection again, I can say that I really liked this run. It had some repetitive moments, since the special attacks get used all the time, but there was clear emphasis on variety and entertainment when possible. (I'm especially fond of Raph and Michaelangelo playing leapfrog or so during the second boss fight.) Good job! Also, just to check, should this obsolete the current TMNT2 run? I don't think it should, given the very different natures of the runs (and the NES game has more stages), but it's worth mentioning.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. From the submission comments:
Shoutouts and thanks to mklip2001 for arguably being the nicest and most supportive person on the forums.

The differences in gameplay are quit striking between this and the NES TAS The NES TAS has 2 players instead of 4 making for a very different experience. But most importantly the NES one has the teleporting glitch which of course makes for a totally different run. If this were a 2 player movie and the NES one didn't have that glitch, then there might be some debate for an obsoletion.
It's hard to look this good. My TAS projects

Raph was special in the run in that he kept the screen moving the fastest. So I would still say that's special =)

There's a scene in this game which is just... ****ed up, I say. Namely, this: Leonardo (blue mask) is just terrified. The expression on April's face doesn't make the situation any better. And what's with Michelangelo's (yellow mask) pose there? It's just wrong.

Great run, awesome job! I'm glad you stuck through the glitches and finished it. I support all arcade TASes and I'd love to see more (X-Men or some vertical/horizontal shooters like Sexy Parodius or the Cave/Atlus bullet hell games Guwange would be awesome!). PS I had to register to do it, but I have to know: 12/28/1987 why?! There must be a reason?!!

I'm guessing Dark Kobold encoded a date somewhere in the run.

I need to congratulate you for breaking boundaries with this 4 player run, presumably pushing the limits of prior TASing. I did enjoy seeing the continual progress through areas that should presumably stop you for a minute whilst you actually expend time and energy fighting. But all that excellence seems par for the course in TASs - after a while, it just started to feel rather repetitive. If I'd seen this game before or was at all attached to the TMNT, I'd surely have enjoyed it more.

I'm trying to do a 1CC run of this game. Can anyone tell me how the dynamic difficulty works in this game, exactly? Is it just "act like one more player exists after each level where he doesn't die?" Also, what are the conditions for invincibility on bosses? It seems that if you hit Rocksteady too many times at once, he just becomes invulnerable until he hits you. Could someone clarify this information for me?
