About the game

The Final Fantasy Legend, known in Japan as Makai Toushi Sa·Ga, is a video game released for the Game Boy in December 1989 by Square Co. It is the first game in the SaGa series and the first computer role-playing game for the system. Square translated the game into English in 1990 for worldwide release and renamed it, linking it with the Final Fantasy series to improve marketing. Sunsoft re-released it in North America during 1998; Square followed with an enhanced remake released for the Wonderswan Color and mobile phones in 2002 and 2007 respectively.
Debuting in the wake of Tetris's success, The Final Fantasy Legend operates on a turn-based system similar to that of Final Fantasy II. The game's characters battle monsters and fiends using a variety of weapons, armor, and skills that develop through the player's actions. The game follows the story of four heroes who attempt to scale a tower at the center of the world that supposedly leads to paradise. The four heroes may belong to one of three character classes, each housing a unique customization path.
The Final Fantasy Legend was conceived by Nobuyuki Hoshino and developed under director Akitoshi Kawazu; renowned composer Nobuo Uematsu wrote its score. The game is Square Enix's first million seller with 1.37 million units shipped. Though released to mixed reception, it has since been described as one of the Game Boy's greatest games and cited as an influence for series such as the Pokémon franchise.
In this run, I used JPN rom to abuse the glitches only of JPN rom.

About the glitches

  • Eating the stocked meat (JPN v1.0 only)
1.Open the ability menu and select the 8th ability.
2.Cancel the selection with B button.
3.When the menu is shut, the character is transformed.
The law of the transformation is the same as eating meat. In a word, the character is supposed to have eaten meat. What kind of meat the character eat depends on the situation. This meat is called "Stocked meat". The stocked meat is decided according to the following rules.
After loading: A fly man's meat.
After the battle (when the enemy doesn't drop meat): A meat of the enemy who appeared at the left side of the battle screen.
After the battle (when the enemy drops meat): A meat that the enemy dropped.
After eating the stocked meat:A meat of the transformed monster.
After joining the companion character:A meat of the joining character
Human's or Esper's meat is the same effect as insect man's meats.
  • 2-8 bug (memory corruption) (JPN v1.0 only)
1.Put it into the state that the character can be transformed by eating the stocked meat.
2.Open the ability menu and select the 2th ability.
3.Cancel the selection with B button.
4.Select the 8th ability and cancel the selection.
5.When the menu is shut, the character is transformed and the memory is corrupted.
The law of the collapse of the memory depends on the race, the level, and the array etc. of the transformed character. For more information, please see the following linked website.(About the glitches and the past run)

Movie of my run
Reference

I hope you enjoy my run.

Flygon: Added the module to the right submission this time.
mmbossman: This is one of those "What is this, I don't even" type movies that is entirely confusing, but still impressive. Accepting for publication.
Flygon: Why didn't I make SD encode earlier.

You fail at writing proper embedding links.

This was nice. The walking bits werent entertaining, but the glitching made up for it. Yes Vote. BTW, for those who want to see that nicovideo video without an account, follow this link and press play at the bottom. Maybe I or some other editor could edit the submission to inlude this link.

Thanks for the extra nicovideo link, Sonikkustar! It seems that another SaGa game has been mutilated by horrible glitches. I couldn't really tell what in the world was happening, but you're at the end of the game in two minutes. It reminds me of the Pokemon Yellow runs, but this one actually has one fight (that seems to be over absurdly quickly too) and is in a language I don't understand. I think it still deserves a Yes vote, though.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. Powerful glitches! Wish I knew a little more about how this worked, the submission text is lacking. But the run is good, I vote yes.

I have no idea what happened here. All I can say is that you somehow managed to beat the game in the claimed time. Definite yes vote.

Some explanation of the glitches etc would be awesome because this is one of those runs that where you have no idea what just happened. Anyhow, Yes vote for the pure glitch fest.

For those who don't know, this is actually the Japanese version of Final Fantasy Legend. I'm curious if this glitch would work in FFL USA. Really, I'm surprised that the author has been so ridiculously productive, and yet the submission texts are lacking in any substantial information. Also, I know a couple people were working on FFL1 and FFL2. I wonder if these submissions will kill that work.

If these glitches work in the US version, it would suck to be them....

I've watched two already, so i'm going to assume all the submitter's own personal encodes cover all that and more. the nicovideo link, at least. But you'd also have to be able to read Japanese. Perhaps someone can take a look at the submitter's encodes and get the info, pull together an "official" English language encode with that for the rest of us?

Refraining from voting because I'm totally lost. (voting yes... seriously though, I'm totally lost on this one.)
I am a figment of my imagination.

Oh, man, this was the first RPG I ever beat (US version)! Great to see it destroyed. Please, whoever is working on the (non-glitched?) US version, please continue. I would love to see the whole game beaten. -Teo
