Well... if I encode this, I could always make subtitles depicting just what's going on in the game (As in, an overview, not translating every single sentence). It's far better than nothing.

Wouldn't it be even harder to read with the Japanese version, since the same amount of English text would have to fit in an even smaller timeframe?
? Kanji usually is rendered faster onscreen than latin characters in many games. But I don't know if faster text speed would be a time-saver in Mother 3. At least the author is starting over with the Japanese ROM now due to improvements in Chapter 1 and 2, apparently. http://www.youtube.com/user/mother3tas The matter about readability is not about how hard it is to read something, because I can't read any of the dialogue even on the English patch.
I meant if there was a Japanese run being subtitled in English, the English subtitles would go by even faster than it does in the English patch version. I've only played the game in Japanese (yeah, I've got the cart in real life) and I feel the Japanese text goes by reeeeeally fast compared to the English version (when I tried out the patch I felt I had to mash A like crazy to get the text at a reasonable speed). I guess I read really fast, though. :| But yeah, the Japanese version would save a lot of time, easily, (even though TASvideos is not supposed to count text speed differences between language versions for or against a TAS...), though I have to wonder in the faster text speed may unintentionally make the Japanese version easier because of the speed of the rolling hitpoints? Has anyone looked into that? Or is battle text already so short it doesn't make a difference?

The only subtitles this game needs are one describing how a particular trick is being done, what is being equipped and why, what item was just snagged and why. A game like this is not meant to be TASed for people to watch like a Let's Play. Half the charm in the Mother games come from talking to the myriad people a TAS would simply ignore. So why make it on the U rom if the J rom is faster? Isn't that a rule on this site anyway? I know there is a rule saying patches need special exemptions and I fail to see how a translation could fit into that exemption rule. It adds nothing to the game. My 2 cents.

I'll be honest here, I haven't been able to understand how people couldn't read the English TAS's WIPs that have been made... I, too, am a really fast reader (Useful for when subtitles on TV just can't quite keep up and the station accelerates the subtitles... those skills transfer over easily to RPG TAS's).

If you're familiar with the game (and you should be, because there's no point watching a TAS of it otherwise), you should be able to read the text, even if it flashes by.

@Wren: Actually the rules just say that English text is preferred. If a different version of a rom is faster, it's preferred, but not if it's only faster because of [Japanese] text speed. (I know at least one run on the site mentions that it's not counted against a TAS because text speed in a non-player controlled variable...) Though I do think the Japanese version should be used, if only because I think arguing for a fan translation patch is more trouble than it's worth (even though this is probably the best one I've ever seen). Though it's a moot point since the guy TASing it has moved to J anyway, right? @Flygon: same here. :> I'd have figured people who speed through games learn to read pretty fast but I guess not.

@ wekhter Now I know what you mean. My idea would be that when there is a lot of dialogue, the subtitles would be jammed (at the bottom of the screen) for a reasonable amount of time. I mean, there are hardly any sequences where there is minutes full of continous text, is there? Just make it easier for the viewer to get along with the plot. @ Wren You have a valid point. But what about those viewers who didn't play the game but are still interested in the plot (like me)? It would be more boring for those viewers who don't quite understand what's going, in a span of 5 hours! I can understand if no-one would be willing to add subtitles though (but Flygon volunteered). @ Flygon Well, English isn't my first language and I wouldn't be able to even read my own language if the text was displayed for just 2 frames. o_o

Just to reiterate, I'd just be summing up the scenes... not actually subtitling every sentence, it'd jut be impossible to read (As well as incredibly labourious to make) if I got a transscript of the fan translation and stuffed it into the movie. Summarizing what is going on is the best option, effectively.

Actually, there are. :c There is a TON of text really near to the end of the game (and as such this video is spoilers, spoilers, spoilers, so don't watch it), just look at the length... Flygon's right, if there are subtitles they'd be summary-only.

I'm curious as to if this will be submitted to TASVideos or not.

Where does he state that? To my knowledge, he is afraid of submitting it since he doesn't want other people to reupload his TAS. I already talked to him about it but he didn't make a final decision on whether he submits his run yet, it seems.

Just posted a question on his channel about it, this was the response i got: "yes a 15 minute faster E version possibly this wiinter break. no 15 minute level sequence just replaced with honey showers/bears. more conservative uses of honey showers. 9000-10000 dp of honey shower should be very effective while leveling along the way. I found PK Ground is not worth the time. "

I'm planning to make a playthrough of this game and study tactics FAQS....I am planning to TAS the fan translation patch and don't care if it gets rejected, I'm tired of that rule and if no one else wants to TAS the english version, I'll do it.

YES! Your attitude is amazing. :D TASvideos' publication nonsense should not influence what TASers TAS.

If someone then suddenly submits the (J) version after the fan hack was somehow published, there is most likely going to have another pointless, community-splitting flame war debate again. (See: previous OoT run for what I mean by "debate")

I certainly wouldn't want the original obsoleted. But if TAS videos will refuse to publish the fan translation run...well that's their decision. With that being said, is there any sites with internal workings on the game? Such as critical hits etc...? If not I guess I'll be doing a lot more reversing :P.

This needs to continue... Seriously, is someone is still interested on TASing this? I mean, 3 years have passed and no one is talking about it anymore. Thats very sad.
