Game objectives

  • Emulator used: VBA22
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Beats the game
  • Takes damage to save time

Comments

Basically, I found out by accident that pausing the game during the boss battle causes the boss to recharge earlier. So, I started this run. I also used tricks that were absent from the previous run, but present in the 100% run. It is 220 frames faster than Mike's run.

Stage comments

1 - 1

As there was no input for the entire stage, no frames were saved.

2 - 1

Skipped a pair of annoyance just like the 100% run - Saved 76 frames

2 - 2

  • This is the stage I discovered the frame rule. I managed to save 1 frame at the switch room, but lost it due to longer loading time.
  • I used the double jump trick to accelerate faster - Saved 6 frames

2 - 3

Somehow, I managed to save 2 frames by the end of the stage.

2 - 4

I saved several frames that got lost due to the frame rule.

2 - 5

While beating the last boss in real time, I accidentally pressed start. I quickly unpaused the game, and to my suprise, the robot stopped earlier than when I expected it to stop. So I started this run, and this is the result - Saved 136 frames

Other Comments

The Frame Rule

There is a frame rule in this game that prevents 1 - 2 frames from being saved. You might enter the door 1 frame faster than the current run, but the game would take 1 frame longer to load.

Pause Trick

Apparently, pausing the game during the last boss changes its time until next recharge. It is the biggest frame saver of this run.

Special Thanks

  • Mike89 - For creating these two movies; without them, the majority of the tricks used would not be here.

Flygon: Added point-based HD YouTube module.
I have no idea how GabCM should embed his module, should it replace the current one, or be put side-by-side?
GabCM: I will put them side-by-side.
GabCM: That's what I did.
Flygon: Added point HD encode download link.

Nach: Accepting as improvement to existing run.

Dammit Epic, I dump the whole dang movie and find that you're making an encode already. I'll be making the point based HD encode. Oh, and, Yes vote for being an improvement on the previous run.

Nice job discovering the pause timesaver! The rest of the run looks good too. I also like the silver coin at the end of the giant spearman fight, though that was probably just coincidence that the timing worked that way. Yes vote.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. From the submission comments:
Shoutouts and thanks to mklip2001 for arguably being the nicest and most supportive person on the forums.

I wouldn't recommend publishing this movie, because I know at the very least that 2-1 is improvable (you can skip the last of the incredibly annoying bag enemies, see the equivalent level in the 100%). Gonna watch the end though cause going slower to go faster sounds awesome.

BTW, this is the sleep in variant. This should be noted in the submission title.

I suggest this screenshot of frame 28187: As it shows an important timesaver.

I believe I did skip them by taking damage. Though I'll try that section again to see if it can go faster.

The previous movie does not take note of this, so I thought it was alright.

Oh, so you did. Huh. Now I have to check and see if my existing run does that. EDIT: yeah, I definitely waited. I'd say that's where a fair bunch of your time savings have come from.

That and the pause trick are where most of the savings from. I updated the submission text to state where I saved time.

Archive collection Standard encode - Lossy Vorbis audio Standard encode - Lossless FLAC audio High Definition encode - Point Mister Epic, for your HQx encode, I suggest using the filename scheme highdefinition-hqx, if you intend to upload it to the same Archive collection. Also, if someone feels like giving Mister Epic moderator powers, he can feel free to modify my post.

You always get a silver coin from the giant spearman. I only got the original Wario Land 2 copy (Black & White), so pausing the game on the original doesn't show the giant PAUSE icon, so that looks new to me :o. I haven't voted because I haven't watched the new run yet.

I can't! I'm still not in the speed run archive! And you didn't frame-blend?

Mister Epic uses AviSynth for his HQx encoding.

One point for Flygon. And AviSynth is really good. Why don't you like it Undie? And I'm using x264 as well.

Tried AviSynth back when using Windows and sure it was okay but nothing impressive. Found it bothering with the encode option files and whatnot. Been using mencoder since I changed to linux and it has just been easy and great to use.

Sadly, I'm unsure about how mplayer/mencoder can handle any hqx setting, but at least you should be able to capture your video right away with a hqx filter. Btw, I would prefer if the encode could be only partially done with this hqx feature. The font credit are simply unreasonable.

I can't believe I got the two encodes to play at exactly the same time. It was like Virtual Boy Wario Land all over again, but with less eye-strain. Yes vote for improvement.

Wario. He doesn't save the girl. Doesn't care about the kingdom. Won't give a crap about some bad guy. He wants the money. A hero? Probably not. More awesome then Mario, yes. My vote, yes.
