Hi everyone, here's a video about a Shining Force 2 engine I'm currently building. I use C# with XNA for this project. I got the battle map, the attack part, along with cursor, target selection and stuff like that. If you find it interresting, don't be shy to comment on this. Here's two video. 2010-10-20 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pw4h5quJkv8 2010-10-23 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJhYoPXnerQ

I'll be following this with great interest. Gonna be a hard job, but it will be worth it in the end. Good luck!

Pretty cool. What's the overall goal of this project? (besides rebuilding the engine)

Well the goal is to be able to build an entirely new story and graphics into a Shining Force 2 engine that will look the same as the game. There's already a community on ShiningForceCentral forums that built a story and some new graphics. It should be possible to edit the engine and make several games out of it. For the moment, I'm doing this for fun, and I'm learning game programming at the same time. I'll post update as often as possible with the changes I made and everything. Anyone knows a good way to capture the screen that is fast ? Camtasia isn't very good, neither is camstudio. Thanks for your comments ! It sure is motivating ! :)

Here's some other progress. I got the text working on the menu, and I added the border around the text. http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/5336/textmenu.png http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/4408/text2f.png I guess it's looking better and better. I'll see what new features I'll add next.

This sounds like a really ambitious project; I'll follow your work as well. Any chance of a public beta of the engine with some demo maps?

You could try FRAPS; I know some runners at SDA use it for PC runs.

I'll try FRAPS, for the demo, sure as soon as I have more features in the battle, I'll release something. It's just that right now, there's not much done. Well a lot is done, but there's still a lot to be done :P I'll add the character display soon, and then I guess I will have to add either the classes system, or the magic with the range and type of target area. I'm pretty I'll curse a lot with the range :P Here's a little video, finally Flygon told me to use Camstudio and it works pretty well. Link to video

Here's some new image. I did the CharacterDisplay However, I'll have a lot of painful fun rewriting all the attack scene, because the way I did isn't very flexible, and now that I want to start magic and stuff. I need to find a new way of doing it. I guess it will take a while before I can post another significant update.

Relevant post below, even more relevant here.
I truly regret to inform everyone but Patrick Parent (ZeXr0) passed away on November 7, 2010 due to complications in the heart transplant he had receieved 2 days earlier. Patrick had been a regular in irc.darkmyst.org#sf2hack up until his operation and personally I was chatting with him for at least an hour every day - he was a really great guy to talk with. Patrick was incredibly optimistic until the end as can be seen from a conversation in irc.freenode.org#tasvideos: ZeXr0: HEY EVERYONE, IT'S TODAY THAT I'M GOING TO HAVE MY NEW HEART Unfortunately Patrick never returned to irc and the only way I have found this information was because recently I had started to worry because Patrick had been missing for so long. Even though heart surgery must be exhausting I assumed he would have logged on even if just for 10 minutes to say hi and let us know everything was a success... I simply hoped for the best. But this morning Flygon inquired about ZeXr0 once again and I decided I must know as it had been too long since I'd heard from ZeXr0... I knew enough details about ZeXr0 that an internet search confirmed he had passed. A site has been setup in memory of Patrick Parent which you can visit: http://www.patrickparent.ca/
Rest In Peace... I loved you as a friend, mate. I knew ya for years.

http://patparent.ca/ is the website. Translated to English here. I had assumed the worst, when he hadn't returned for a month. Rolanmen1 and I had discussed ways of determining the outcome, but I couldn't bring myself to find the truth... He was such a nice person, and a positive spirit. He will be missed.
Sage advice from a friend of Jim: So put your tinfoil hat back in the closet, open your eyes to the truth, and realize that the government is in fact causing austismal cancer with it's 9/11 fluoride vaccinations of your water supply.

For real? Fuck! I didn't kow him well, but I like people with high ambitions. When they die young it's the worst. He'll leave a giant hole in the community. :(

Can't really say I knew the guy all that well. But he was still a familiar face around here. Will certainly be missed. So long, Zero Kirby.
A hundred years from now, they will gaze upon my work and marvel at my skills but never know my name. And that will be good enough for me.

The worst thing I've been thinking about what's going on with ZeXr0 happened. He died indeed. And I thought he would go well after this operation, but it turned out as a failure. Damn it! He was only 24! Even if I didn't know him very well, I still feel sad about this. He was a nice community member. Reste en paix, ZeXr0.

It reminds us all that our time is finite, but it feels really wrong when someone goes at such a young age. I hope his family can move on.

It always makes me sad when someone dies young. :( I hope everyone has signed up to be organ donors when you die. It's a good choice to make for someone else.

I can't believe that after a long time, now it's the momment i notice this. This saddens me a lot, i only knew Patric for like 2 months, and he was a nice guy and realy optimistic. Im studying computer science, and he helped me lots of problems with patience and dedication with his knowledge. I realy get sad because i couldn't be of much help to him. I hope you Rest In Peace, because most of us will mis you Patrick.

Oh, so he didn't survive that transplant after all. That's sad. :\ (Kinda makes me think how many more people that were once active TASVideos members silently passed away and slipped into obscurity without anybody here knowing…)
