It's obvious that the new SMB3 movie will be faster than the old. If you decide to switch to USA version, it's fine by me, but it makes the exact improvement very difficult to calculate. Some people would be interested of the exact improvement.

Actually, the US version is easier, michael fried. You said that already, but my question was how is it easier.

The power-down difference is the only thing that comes to mind right now.

European is stranger. boosts come a bit earlier and jumps are shorter :) maybe it can change a lot of things ? Short demonstration: http://koti.mbnet.fi/maxkyh/SMB3_E.zip (3.2 megs)

And Genisto, i work on a games developing company, but that doesnt help any as i'm not a programmer, i make the graphics :) I am currently starting a project of a game where i will have to decide everything including the way the game works, so i will try and pay more attention as to how things are done in these games where making it simple was the key to performance. Oasiz: you cant play a movie recorded on a J or U version on an E version because they work at diferent speeds

Well, that doesn't really matter because we're deciding which version of the game to record on in the first place. I think I usually prefer the region where the game came out first so it hasn't been "tampered with" and strayed from the original idea, but I also like when a new version of a game polishes it up a bit or irons out some mistakes. Tough choice, I guess... Edit by Michael Fried: Sorry, I accidentally clicked to edit your post instead of making my own, but it's back now.

Oops, sorry about that, Foda, I meant to ask what exactly is easier about the US version, but I think you knew what I meant. Anyway, can you explain what the other differences are besides the fading at the beginning of the levels that would affect difficulty? Btw, sorry about accidentally deleting your post, Bag of Magic Food, but I put it back. Edit: Oops x3, I just noticed Bag of Magic Food already answered my question on the other page, I really need to pay more attention to things. *slaps own face* Anyway, are there any other differences?

on the J version there are 2 levels of power: power 1 = small mario power 2 = big, fire, leaf, lakitu, etc, marios on the US version there are 3 levels of power: power 1 = small mario power 2 = big mario power 3 = fire, leaf, lakitu, etc, marios taking damage goes down 1 power level. so, on the US version its possible to take damage and be transformed into big mario, allowing for another damage without getting killed. it also allows for you to find another power 3 type item, while on the J version you would have to find a mushroom first also, rumor says that the cannon balls fire at slower rate on the US version, i will test it

Ah, I should have just linked to The Mushroom Kingdom's info for this. The only real difference I can see there, though, is the power-down effect--but make sure to read the Goomba's Shoe section for more information on how it affects that, too. There's also the ending of 5-1, which would make a pretty big difference in the timing of that level, and of course the fade-in effect, but otherwise there don't seem to be any huge differences. Well, maybe text speed, but that comes with the translation territory.

*loads up J rom followed by U rom and tests it out* That's interesting, I wonder why they would have changed that. Anyway, I don't think the power levels would affect a save state run at all since you're not gonna be getting hit at all anyway, though if it's true that the cannon fire rate is different then that could be a problem.

Maybe they changed it because it seemed unfair. I mean, if I have to grab two power-ups to be Firey, I should have to be hit twice to power back down to Small. Doesn't that sound more reasonable to you?

They probably changed it to make the game easier for the non-Japanese markets. That being said... "fire, leaf, lakitu, etc, marios"? Lakitu? I must've missed something there...

This is much more likely, since they used to do this all the time back then.

Heh, I just tried the European version, and now I see what Oasiz is talking about. I can't do those cool jumps at the beginning of 1-2 anymore! I managed to pull them off quite easily in the Japan and USA versions, so I guess the compensation for PAL's framerate made Mario a bit more sluggish.

The cannon ball fire at exact same rate at both "U PRG0" and "J" versions, that is every 135 frames. didnt test the bob-ombs but they must be the same too. and the US version of mario 3 saves 55 frames for each transition. counting levels 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, fortress, tank, ship, pipe, flying ship, pipe, 8-1, 8-2, fortress, pipe, tank, castle that will give a 16 x 55 = 880 frames of difference because of transitions, which seems to be the only difference. add 880 to the final frame count to know the total improvement. (880 frames ~= 14,666 seconds)

Is there any difference between the PRG0 and the PRG1 versions?

genisto's level 1 worked fine on the U version after removing 55 frames, but level 2 desyncs at the very beggining

I know that some text was changed between PRG0 and PRG1, but I can't think of anything else.

I have done the World 1 in the US version: about 55 frames saved in each level done, but lost about 139 frames when the text appear at the end of stage 3 comparing to the Japan version = 135 frames faster with the castle level improved a little bit (5 frames) http://genisto.servehttp.com/Super_Mario_Bros._3_U_PRG1_Genisto.rar

I’ll show you how to do a faster power-up in 1-1 than the one you guys are currently using. Now I haven’t had time to test out all the angles yet, but it already makes the first level 2 frames faster than your newest one Genisto. If you or FODA can play around with it for a bit, I’m sure it can still be faster, especially if you make it over the pit. It’s good to tie up loose ends while it’s still early in the run. Nice improvements on World 1 btw. http://members.shaw.ca/richu/SMB3PTest.zip

Well, so far, it works in both the PRG0 and PRG1 versions, which is nice.

I have done the change in the movies: it's save me 19 frames: Stage 1: 11 frames faster using the trick of Sleepz Stage 2: 2 frames lost due to a bad random with the hammer guy on the map world Stage 3: 6 frames faster Castle : 4 frames faster: good random with the hammer guy http://genisto.servehttp.com/Super_Mario_Bros._3_U_PRG1_Genisto.rar

Aawesome. I'm still struggling with my new pc, so... if you can do the rest it would be great because you are one hell of a better timeattacker than i am. But if you are getting those desyncing and stability problems i can do the rest no problem, just tell me what you think is better.
