I never thought that I would start any topic on this Off Topic forum... Back onto the topic, now tell me if (you think) you, especially the TASers, are musicians. I myself, for one instance, have been writing miserable music (I do compare with Beethoven's) since I happened to listen to some serious CDs. I am no way skilled in musical composition, so revising my musical works steals a lot of time from my TASing. Anyway, in this sense, I regard myself as a musician for now. So why would I bother to ask this question (the one in the title, not this line itself) here? It just occured to me that many TASers appear to be bound up with music. I'm interested and willing to see if this is anything common among the people here. EDIT: Changed the title to prevent abusing some simple intentional misinterpretations like what

Yes. I practice playing the guitar for several hours every day and have been playing for a few years now. I still don't feel good enough to actually record anything though. I prefer to get good first, so once I'd record something there'd actually be some value to it. I also try myself at composing every now and then. With the few TASes I had started and never finished, I also had the feeling that they just wouldn't be good enough and thus found myself unable to complete them, so I can agree that music and TASing are very linked in some way (they are both forms of art that require lots of theoretical knowledge and technical precision in the final product, after all). ;p

I'm definitely a musician in spirit. Which I find extremely annoying, as I have a nasty habit of conjuring up some truly amazing compositions while I'm asleep or falling asleep. Of course, I can can never remember what these songs are by the time I wake up. Otherwise, musically, I stink.

lol, I'm the same, Ferret Warlord. Except that I've actually realized over time that those songs aren't even worth being remembered because I can come up with equally good ones at any time and that they aren't really all that great. It's nice to know my brain isn't actually just being lazy while I'm sleeping though. xD

Yeah I'm the greatest musician in spirit. I just don't believe in spirits.

The same thing happens to me when falling asleep, and then also in the shower. If someone could jack into my brain right then and download what I've composed in my head then I would basically be the greatest musical genius in all of human history. Then I wonder if beethoven had the same problem and the stuff we ended up with are from him is just the stuff he crapped out during daylight hours in a vague effort to approximate what his dream muse brought to him, and he is disgruntled with how poorly it measures up. Then I could lend him my compositional download equipment and he could put me back in my place.

I couldn't compose if my life depended on it, so, not really, I guess.

I did try to compose music but it turns out that I'm either a really bad composer or I don't have the patience to make it good. One thing to note is that I highly value the quality in the soundtrack of games I play. Perhaps it's what I value the most in a game...

Here's part of a melody I came up with while falling asleep in a loop. For me, when I take the time to transcribe these melodies that sound so amazing to me at the time, they just turn out to be pretty average stuff. I still like that melody, but it's nothing special. It's not 100% what I've dreamt, but pretty close.

I used to compose music both on a tracker and on a midi sequencer software many, many years ago, but that hobby has waned quite significantly (partially because of lack of tools and because, quite ironically, my computer hardware has gone towards being more primitive in the sound department than it was over 10 years ago). Here are a couple of tunes I composed back then (with a midi sequencer and the awesome SB awe32, RIP). Nothing fancy, really: http://koti.kapsi.fi/warp/Sunshine.v1.0.mp3 http://koti.kapsi.fi/warp/Laulu.v1.0.mp3 http://koti.kapsi.fi/warp/test8.mp3 And something for the Adlib: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T94TZ3J_biE

I often hear some compositions, sometimes rather complex, in my dreams or think them up, but lack tools and abilities to transcribe them, if only because it would take years to master them to an appropriate level. And then I just forget. It would probably be more efficient to wait until the consumer-grade brain-to-pc interface appears on the market. Btw, just a couple hours ago I heard an awesome track in my dreams. I was so excited I woke up, and it turned out what I heard was a heavily distorted version of another track that was playing from my speakers at the time and shared only one common element (really amusing how it transformed in my dream). Gives me more incentive to listen to ambient while asleep. :P

I do some stuff with sequencing, and Im pretty well versed in music theory, but I lack the ability to play any real instrument. Used to get into flute and trumpet in grade school, but that was a ways back, lol. Right now Im just starting to get interested in composition and rearrangement again.

This! I do convey some of that stuff by doing level design since I really suck at drawing as well, I get most of my inspiration from dreams, bus/train trips. Oh and the mythical power of shower. I want that brain interface now :( So much stuff to share with others.

I've shown my music several times on this forum so I guess you could call me a musician. But really I don't feel like I have a natural talent for the "music" part of it - so maybe that is more "in my thoughts". What I mean is that I can (or used to be able to) work on making an instrumental, and it can turn out decent, but it takes me a lot of time, trial and error, and it's rarely exactly as I envisioned it. So I get by, but the beats are more complete in my thoughts than they sound when actually constructed. On the other hand, with writing lyrics and reciting them, I feel that I have a real knack for that, and it comes much more naturally to me. So lately I've focused on only that portion of it, using existing music to rap over, and it's been very enjoyable. Recent example.

Awww, that's so demotivating, pirate. You knew that deep inside I considered myself a deep intellectual artist critic poet. Now my whole universe is shattered.

I wonder if pirate_sephiroth is a successful troll in his thoughts.

Nah, last I checked he was just a troll that told stories. On the subject, I play the guitar, I was told that I'm very good at it. I'm in the jazz band in high school right now.

My friend Viovis is the only real artist in TASVideos. (Shinryuu was also great, but he's retired) http://sites.google.com/site/ghettoflower/ (I like talltroll.xm)

It's believed that waterfalls have more mythical power, but they aren't so accessible as showers. And I want that brain interface, too, provided that they are disconnected from the Internet so that no craker could troll inside my thoughts.
