Although this game is very linear it's still a fun TAS to have done.
goal: Shortest completion time with good ending
  • Emulator used: openMSX 0.8.1
  • MSX model used: Panasonic FS-A1WSX
Explanation of stages:
  • Stage 01: Make sure you catch all the fish before entering the shop @ 483 - Gamble to buy needed items
  • Stage 01: Enter Warp @ 237
  • Stage 06: Enter Warp @ 145
  • Stage 09: Enter Warp @ 335
  • Stage 12: Enter Santa's Cave @ 181 and get the document fight the dragon
  • Stage 13: Enter Warp @ 355
  • Stage 15: Enter Warp @ 078
  • Stage 18: Enter Warp @ 418
  • Stage 24: Enter Shop @ 1109 and buy the document
Just before the end I pause once to get the 'good ending'
There is one point in the game that could use some improvements (stage 12 killing of the dragon)

It doesnt really seem all that appealing since most of the time you dont do anything really suprising. The fact that this is an autscroller doesnt necessarily help either. No Vote. I didnt really catch this when you posted it on the MSX Forum. However, I would say that due to its very limited opportunities, that this is a bad game choice.

This game is so unrealistic. There are no bats in the antarctic. The game itself is pretty amusing. Just the thought of a penguin running around with a gun shooting dragons made my day far, far sweeter. However, as for the run itself, I have a bit of a hard time deciding because there's so little you can do to affect the speed of the game. However, on a rough scale, it's clearly completed as fast as it could and certainly faster than intended. The luck manipulation and boss battles were the most entertaining parts, because those were executed well and had the biggest impact on the final completion time. As it stands, it's just enough for me to vote yes, because, if nothing else, it shows off a new game I don't think many people are familiar with.

I love this game. (I just reviewed it last month for Blistered thumbs: http://www.blisteredthumbs.net/2011/03/wvg-penguinadventure/ ) It's not exactly an auto-scroller like Sonikkustar said, but when you travel at top speed all the time it might as well be. Anyway, I had to give you a meh vote based on the following criteria: 1. Most of the time you don't do much that's interesting or exciting. A lot of the time you just stand there in the middle. When you get a cloud, most of the time you just float to the top and stay there. You should move around more. Dodge more hard-to-dodge enemies rather than killing them. Do dangerous stuff. 2. You get way too many orange hearts. There's only one time I can see where getting one is entertaining, and that's on one level where you smash through a whole bunch of boulders at once. Even then you pretty much stay still. Otherwise, it just looks like you get these to make the game easier. That's no fun. Do challenging fun stuff. It's a TAS. You shouldn't be playing it safe and going invincible all the time. Besides that, it interrupts the music. When you get more than one in one level it's actually annoying. 3. I don't really see the need to buy the feather. I'm not entirely convinced you need the propeller beanie either. You can save a few frames by just buying the green shoes and the pistol and ignoring the others. It'll make the game tougher but it shouldn't slow you down. If you absolutely need the beanie hat to save time, then go for it, but I don't think the feather is necessary. 4. I think I noticed a point where the game lags that can be avoided. It's in one of the last levels where a smiley-face shoots at you. It seems like the projectiles created lag with all the enemies on screen, so killing the smiley-faces before they shoot would make the game go faster. I know this seems to contradict what I said earlier about dodging enemies rather than killing them, but you want to avoid lag where you can. 5. On one of the levels where you get the map, you seem to wait for a long time before leaving the shop and I have no idea why. 6. You yourself commented that one of the bosses is improvable. You do zoom through this game fast and you take a very optimal route with shortcuts, but because of the game's nature, you shouldn't really be going through it so robotically. Penta's gotta be a daredevil here.

What Heisanevilgenius said, plus can the luck manipulation at the start be done any quicker?

Voted yes. I thought this was full of action, even if not challenging.

And another thing: You picked Level 1 instead of Level 2. Around here we usually prefer to see a run of the most difficult setting unless there's a compelling reason to play the easier one.

I don't think this game is suitable for TASing. Also, why does the main character have transparent highlights? Cheapskate developers.

...what are you talking about!? What highlights!? It's a penguin! And I'd hardly call the developers cheapskate. This game was made by Konami. Specifically by Hideo Kojima. And it's loaded with awesome stuff. He obviously put a LOT of work into this game.

The MSX1 only had support for monocolor sprites, so that's where that comes from.

Meh.. I liked playing this, as a child and I think it should be published for the sake of having it in archive but i would not watch this back to back, to see the other ending.

I might consider giving this game a shot and see if I can come up with something more entertaining.

Heisanevilgenius thanks for the great feedback; I agree with all of it. but for the sake of having this game as a TAS I don't want to withdraw it.... I'll leave the judgement up to people who vote. It's my first attempt at a TAS and I probably should have done a better job dodging stuff and making it more challenging. The only needed items are the running shoes and the gun (and those maps) For some reason there is lag when you leave the shop... I only saw it in the replay how long it took and I might have made a mistake there.

Voted Meh, I've played this game when I was a kid, and I'm sure the nostalgia factor kept me away from No. Heisanevilgenius summed it up for us, great feedback, that's exactly what I meant. This game could have more love, TASing it is not a bad idea, but you really need to play more with projectiles and almost-death avoids. Anyway, good job, and thanks for bringing back old memories!

I quite like the game as a kid too. The music is good, and somehow I got stuck watching this TAS to the very end. Also I like the salesmen stating "Buy more damnit!". :) I'll throw in a YES-vote on this. There are improvements to make, but I was entertained for the quarter of an hour it took to watch it. Cheers! Looking forward to an improved version.

I voted meh because while the run was well done I found it too repetitive, so as a TAS it wasn't very entertaining.
