One more time... does everyone still like the name "Hourglass"? The main thing I didn't like about that name was how ubiquitous a word it is (hard to search for, and there must be programs already called that). Right now it's still called winTASer, which I don't think is such a bad name really, but I could see it switching to Hourglass, or something else if anyone has any new ideas on the name.
I really like "winTASer". It's self-explanatory and since there's no real naming competition here, there's no reason not to use a self-explanatory name. Great work so far! Back when this thread started, I followed for a while and then went semi-absent from TASes. Now that I've come back to see this progress you've made, I'm extremely excited. Also, please test VVVVVV!

The main things preventing a release right now are kind of stupid things such as the hotkeys not being configurable yet and the movie file format not storing some things that can affect movie sync and the source code having lots of commented-out temporary testing stuff that should be cleaned up. (That, and some of the recent changes I've made need to be verified on more computers, in case some things need to be reworked to be more compatible.)
Well, let's get this cleaned up and released! At least get it into a SVN on googlecode or something so people can help (if I have time and the required extertise, I can try to help out). I wouldn't worry about more game compatibility right, we need to get some good TASes on the games that work and work out the kinks and get users using this thing. Also, I really like name Hourglass
It's hard to look this good. My TAS projects

since you asked for opinions, I guess I can post about it I find winTASer to be kind of lame, but I don't particularly like Hourglass either (though I guess I find it to be a more proper name), and have no other ideas

If you're going to go with a "-jin" name, then clearly it should be "Winjin".

How about "WinAssist" / "Win-assist"?

Maybe we should have a poll? I really like Hourglass, and there seems to be no notable software by this name (surprisingly!). After all stuff like LAME didn't get lost in obscurity even though its name was truly ubiquitous. There was another suggestion on the first page, WinTAGE (Windows Tool-Assisted Gaming Environment), which was also cool, but clearly not as cool as Hourglass.

VVVVVV actually has some damn optimized unassisted runs recorded, and considering the simplicity of its engine I'm not at all sure they are improvable by that much. You should check them out if you haven't.

VVVVVV is also Flash-based, and IIRC Flash has some rather hairy spiders interfering with making a TAS-capable engine.

I'm actually quite interested in TASing some of the more popular GameMaker games - Iji being a good example of one - especially Karoshi. I've managed to get the game's source from the author, but due to save state desyncs haven't been able to adapt it for TASing purposes. Shame. But this might make it possible! Also, as I often seem to lack the perseverance required to make a TAS, I'd like to start contributing to this site as a programmer. So if I can do anything to help here, I'd love to. On a side note: If you happen to know where I can learn the skills needed for emulator programming, please PM me.

Nitsuja, you could always pick the top names and turn it into a poll. And then not pick that name if you don't like it. Anyway, on to some suggestions: - Winning - WonderGlass - WinTasDows - Yeah these kinda suck.

Here's me hat. Now throw it in with WinTASer.
A hundred years from now, they will gaze upon my work and marvel at my skills but never know my name. And that will be good enough for me.

I prefer WowerGlass, seriously. EDIT: logo idea (the rightmost one): Yeah, I knew this could be drawn better :p

As a possible variation on WinTASer, you could just go with "WinTAS" since that sounds a little more professional, is shorter, and is self-explanatory.

It's kind of weird for a tool to call itself "the tool that lets you make tool-assisted things"... maybe somthing along the lines of Windows Re-recorder? "WinRec", or "WRec" (the tool that destroys windows games)... On a side note, is Scarlet Weather Rhapsody TASable with this? Not that this should be nowhere as near as a priority, but strategies for speedrunning its story mode saw some popularity in Nicovideo... however the game has some hairy programming...

The first thing came up in my mind: WinRR (pronounced as winnarr (winner))
