Take a screenshot of your desktop, and post it here, if you want. Here's mine. Click on the thumbnail for the full picture. (Updated on September 21st 2011) Desktop objectives: *Full-HD resolution (1920x1080) *No icon in the desktop. Most of everything else is pinned in the Start Menu. Games are in Steam. My TAS encoding stuff is in My Documents. Recycle Bin in the Taskbar. *Uses the old-school Windows style, even if it's Windows 7. *Is in French.

Nice (& obvious) idea

I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

I've made a search, and there's a topic about desktop backgrounds, but nothing about full desktops.

My current desktop:
    - is 1440x900 - is bright and colorful, yet simple - is about 20% cooler - is uncluttered. Games and such are in the start menu and on the F drive, for the most part.

My desktop. The background is a sobel-filtered image of a photo I took. A lot of bonus point if you can identify the city!

TOO CLEAN Where's all your temp trash that we use to keep on our desktops? :D Ah, it's just a wallpaper. Plain wallpapers are boring, everyone is interested, how dirty you are XD

My desktop: (from November 2009 but still almost current, as it rarely ever changes) - Windows XP in French - Classic mode, with a custom scheme I've been using since 2002 - 32x32 tiled pattern, maybe boring but at least it doesn't distract me - Above HD resolution (1920x1200) + second screen (1280x1024) - A few icons in the top-left corner (My Computer, Recycle Bin, a few folders I left there), but rarely visible - Many of XP's icons replaced with older ones from Windows 2000 or MacOS 7-9 (or in that style) as I liked them better

Can I get that wallpaper pretty please? Tineye is awesome: http://img386.imageshack.us/img386/2575/1920purpletexturelesszi2.jpg Also, my desktop is useless to post. I have wallpapers on rotation, no icons, and my bar is a standard KDE bar.

This might be a good time to, once again, express my puzzlement about why some people clutter their desktops with mostly useless icons. The famous 90-10 rule could probably be applied to applications (and documents): 90% of the time you will use only 10% of your apps. (It could probably be directly applied to an overly cluttered desktop as well: 90% of the time you will only need 10% of your desktop icons.) This raises the question: Wouldn't it be better to just have that 10% of desktop icons and have the rest nicely packaged in a logical hierarchy of folders or start menu entries? (After all, that's precisely what directories/folders were created for.) In the very rare event that you need to use some of that 90%, it's not a big deal to navigate one or two levels of folders/menus to find it. It's not like you need to do that every 5 minutes.

I don't know where else to put them, and Desktop is the default folder for my downloads

That, and laziness to clean everything up.

It's all about the laziness Warp. I've used to have a crapload of useless stuff on my desktop before I totally wiped it out until there's nothing on it. Now I don't even want to put something on my pretty desktop now, unless it becomes necessary. My laptop's desktop is still full of crap thought. I almost never use it anyway, but next time I use it, I'll clean this one as well.
