Hi there I saw that there wasn't a topic yet about this great game. I was wondering if somebody was interested in TAS'ing this game. I'm not a TAS'er myself so i can't do it, be we can already start discussing the game and route.

There is always the N64 version but I think that has emulation errors.

Damn, i would love to see a good run of the game. Anyone knows a good speedrun video (non tas) of the game then?

http://speeddemosarchive.com/ResidentEvil2.html I haven't seen it in a while, but from what I remember it's pretty well done.

Bah! Non of us were TAS:ers in the beginning. Just download an emulator and start crunching! :)

so is there seriously no one doing this run? If not, I will work on this. Any insight? I am moderately well-versed in this game, but not so much on exploits. I am going to watch the SDA run, critique his route, and make mine accordingly. But short of micro-optimizations and the best route, I dont know what to do. The last time I made a TAS, people didn't even look at the memory dump thing or whatever that tool is. edit: where can i find info about commonly used emulator functions for TASing? also, i didnt see any rules regarding what kind of image file / rom to use. I have the NTSC-U. I'm not sure if the dual shock or not dual shock version is better. I'm still in the planning phase.

Well, I read that, but it does not answer any of my questions. psx games do not adhere to romset notation, as far as i know. So, the b1 o1 stuff is irrelevant. It also makes no mention of file types. I have a sneaking suspicion that of ISO, BIN/CUE, IMG/CCD/SUB, one of those types is better than another. Also, why does it appear that PSXjin wont even load my games? I've tried multiple games, and I believe that I have configured everything that is necessary. But, open disc / select file / close disc does not cause the game to start. edit: it appears that only PSXJin doesnt like my isos. ePSXe does however, which confuses me. I'll attempt downloading re-dump quality isos for this game and use them.

You do have BIOS set up, and the emulator itself properly configured right? If so, it should work... As for what is better (Bin/IMG/Iso) ... I've have the best with BIN and img, though ever since JIN, ISOs seem to work great too... So I really guess no differences now, though couldn't say the same for PCSX.

Where can I find typical settings for PSXjin? Or even better, for Resident Evil games? The RE3 submission contains no information regarding this. Also, I'm having an EXCEEDING amount of difficulty simply trying to play the game. Half the time, it works, the other half, it never loads. When it does load, its visually and audibly obvious that the game isn't running at full speed, which concerns me. Maybe RE games have cutscene/movie problems. I'm not sure. edit: ok. I've worked out the kinks, and I've figured out why it appeared to be running slowly. Are theyre typical settings I should use? is simply hitting the "nice" button on the graphics config not sufficient? I have picked options which explicitly say TAS safe

Typical settings I use for PSXjin: (Considering both the GFX and SPU plugins are built in) Graphics: Window mode (depending on CPU it can maxamize correct FPS), No dithering (fastest), Use FPS limit, Auto Detect FPS, Scanline disabled.. That's it, though the only graphic problems I've had with Jin are in MediEvil II (2), the floor stretches into the walls. You could try messing around with the different special game fixes to see if any help. I haven't played RE2 on Jin, or any other RE game for that matter on Jin. Sound: Mode: Dual SPU, Snyc Method: Method "N", reverb: Don't output reverb, interpolation: none, output XA. In options: Auto detect system type (though I always get NTSC games so it's no big deal)... There are also Resident Evil fixes under the CPU option, specifically "Resident Evil 2/3 Fix". If you've got all that squared away, and it's still messing up, then I'll try and get this game and see if I can get it to work, or after doing the above, you could try asking arukAdo on the irc, since he TAS'd them (not sure about 2 off the top of my head, but I know he did 3).

Hi, im working on this, even tho i didnt exactly started, drop by irc if you want to have a talk about it, theres 4 runs to do so the work can be spliced if your cooperative kind, otherwise wish you best luck. And no theres no setting whatsoever, except that you need to use hack hotkey.

please give me more insight about this hack. I'm convinced that my use of it is preventing my movies from playing back properly. When you play back a movie, do I need the hack always on, always off, or what? If I toggle the hack while recording a movie, does the playback of that movie toggle the hack at the same time? There seems to be a relationship between the frame counter flashing red/white with the game freezing. When the hack is off, and an event (door, cutscene) happens, the frame counter flashes red and white every other frame. When the hack is on, the frame counter does not flash and the event can be done. What does it mean when the frame counter is red? also, I have never logged into irc before, but im familiar with using a unix command prompt. Ive seen one of my coworkers with an IRC chat in their session, so it must be possible to connect that way.

The re3 submission/topic contain detail about how the hack work, and yes its grunt work (youll have to test EVERY door in game to check wether or not it require the hack, and trust me ill look behind because if you extra use the hotkey where its not required thats like cheating, basicly). Theres a web irc client http://webchat.freenode.net/ Edit: theres not much to explain on the hack itself, its a hotkey, so its like a button press, its recorded _inside_ the movie, so its also playback afterward, the only difference with other button is you have to key down, then on another frame frame key up (press/release the button), this is done with the same key tho.

Just want to say that an RE2 TAS would be great fun to watch. I hope you get all stuff sorted out so you can begin working on it. Good luck.

The question is, which character and which letter should be done?
Why, oh, why do I even try to understand my own species?

Well idealy have to do the 4 runs, ClaireA LeonB LeonA ClaireB. This is _massive_ work tho, so hardly can be done by just one player. Theres also hunk (100% kills?) and tofu (pacisift?) afterward. Afaik the runs on sda are good to go with, just a bit less pickup and few extra evasion are to be considered, but route wise the grunt work is already done.

I just wanted to give an update, so I don't lead anyone on with false hopes: I simply don't have the time I need to invest in this project to make a quality run. Between working 50 hours a week, girlfriend, and other stuff, I just can't find or dedicate the multiple hundreds of hours it will take to complete this. That, combined with the difficulty involved with simply getting the game to run in the emulator and inevitable savestate loss/overwriting problems, I just can't do it. Sorry guys.

you don't need to do BOTH HUNK AND TOFU cause it's the same strat as i recall(i suggest using Tofu for the looks even though hunk has less health and is technically harder to speedrun when you consider the run is about taking damage,i'm divided here)
TAS i'm interested: megaman series: mmbn1 all chips, mmx3 any% psx glitched fighting games with speed goals in general
