I am planning a tas of Muramasa on shigurui mode, which requires a save file to unlock. According to the rules, it seems the requirement for using a save file is to present a demonstration movie of the save being created. So my question is, is this still necessarily if the movie will sync with any arbirtrary save file, so long as it has shigurui mode unlocked? I have tested my movie with my personal save file, as well as two others i found online, and it syncs in all cases. I am tempted to err on the side of caution, and just do it anyway, however dolphin does not sync perfectly, and it also does not have a working read only mode, so checking for desyncs requires playing the entire movie from the start. So, naturally i'd prefer not to if i don't need to.

Yes, a verification movie to create SRAM or a savestate is always required, because otherwise there's no way for the judges to know that you didn't hack the SRAM/savestate before starting your movie from it.

If your movie syncs with all the save files you've found, it's very likely that it'll sync with the save file produced by a verification movie too, so a verification movie shouldn't be too hard to produce. (It doesn't have to be a TAS, just recorded on an emulator.)

Indeed, i'm not worried about it not syncing. I just did not want to go through the effort of completing the game again (especially with non perfect syncing, and no read only on dolphin, so i'll probably end up playing large chunks of it multiple times, not to mention it only runs at ~20-30 fps with tasable settings). Oh well, thanks for confirming.

It just occurred to me, that since read only does not work in dolphin, would it be acceptable to save and restart a new movie file in order to set up the save file for my actual run?

Yes. one movie can play through, sub-optimally or however you want, so that the SRAM is in the desired state. Then you can create a new movie that starts from power-on and doesn't clear SRAM.
