Get on your reorg boots people. I don't know about you, but I'm sick and tired of Wiki: Movies-Hacks. The page has every movie which starts from an unclean state, which is already tagged. It contains multiple games in a movie which is also already tagged. Lastly, game hacks which is not tagged. I think this just makes things harder to find, and hides some great gems. How would you guys feel if the page just died, all movies appeared under their appropriate system, and we tagged hacked games as such. Then if you really want to see one of these categories, you can just look at the special movies by category tag pages? I'm interested if you agree, disagree, or have a better idea.

Sounds good to me. The SRAM/savestate movies already have a category, and a "Hack" category could be added. I just wish these things could be done in less dramariffic maners...

Doing this though would mean that junk like NES Air would appear on the NES page. Would that be annoying? Conversely, I'd want Super Demo World on the SNES page. Everyone should know about that game and its TAS.

The NES page already has many worse games than Air on it. The vast majority of these movies would greatly improve just about any page that's lucky enough to be graced by their presence.

As I said on IRC, I think it would be best to put a little sub-section at the bottom of the respective console pages for hacks instead of putting them straight in with the other games. You could also make a "quick link" at the top (kind of like on wikipedia pages) that says "Hacks" and takes you directly to that section of the page.

I agree with the change. One of my favorite runs is the Super Mario Kart for the ridiculousness shown and I didn't even know it existed for most of the time I have been on the site because it wasn't on the SNES page and I never thought that it would be in the "Hacks" section instead. Also, rog, with the positive feedback this is getting I would un-cancel my run if I were you since they will most likely use it as the post that shows the rule change and publish it normally.

I don't see why the hack/demo runs shouldn't be merged in with the other games. The Air TAS wouldn't look too out of place considering Linus Spacehead, Dizzy the Adventurer, and Treasure Island Dizzy (all homebrew) are in NES-FDS movies as well. I like the idea of merging them and getting rid of the Hacks/Demos section.

I don't think unlicensed games fall under the term "Homebrew". http://www.mobygames.com/game/nes/quattro-adventure/cover-art/gameCoverId,15646/

How many games use real emulation hacks ? I got re3 but is theres any other "leggit" hacks around ? MGS doesnt need it anymore so im not sure theres any others And yeah i think homebrew is a better term to speak of what we call hacks right now

All movies in the "hacks" section should just be put in the SNES, NES, GBA etc. sections where they belong. No need for any "sram" or "hack" sections at all in my opinion. Sorting by sram is like sorting depending on which glitch you are using in the game. "Wall jump runs section". It's just meh...

I agree that dirty-SRAM movies should be in general platform listing. But hacks and homebrew games should definitely be listed separately.

Okay, I added a category tag for "Homebrew or hacked game" for starters, so at least these will be organized well. Note, this tag really only applies for consoles. For DOS/Windows, since they are open platforms, anyone could release anything for them. They don't have an approval process by a singular gatekeeper. Therefore the tag does not really apply to them. Although they do have the rare occurrence of hacks (like modified maps for Wolfenstien 3D or Command & Conquer), there really is no good concept of Homebrew. A game like Bomberglob or Hugo's House of Horrors is just as official on that platform as Atomic Bomberman or Space Quest is.

For DOS/Windows games I guess you can draw the line at unofficial mods/patches to games, no matter if the game itself is a "homebrew".

Ilari and I did ~70% of the work on this so far. For regular users, the initial changes are now in place. These categories now appear on their appropriate pages. RIP hacks page.

Yes. That's as much as I have to say.

The category tag has been renamed to "Unofficial game". Clarification of how to use the tag is now available: http://tasvideos.org/MovieClassGuidelines.html#UnofficialGames

That tag sounds like it includes unlicensed games as well, is that the case? If so do games like Action 52 which were not in the "Hacks" section need the label? Here is a list of unlicensed games. Some of which have movies on the site.

Yes, it should include unlicensed games. I know it's hard to define what exactly is classified as a "second tier" game, as we have wonderful hacks like Super Demo World, and questionable games like Bible Adventures or Action 52. Therefore we're going to draw the line between some sane definition of official and unofficial. Just because there is some company behind a game doesn't necessarily make it any better or worse than a game made by a hobbyist. We're not here to label the quality of the game, although game quality will be reviewed by judges before accepting runs. But we will label unofficial games as being so when published.
