Agreed 110%. Everything about a desktop computer is always massively superior to a laptop computer, excepting the one property: portability.
A lot of people I know are like that too. They have laptop computers and would never even consider a desktop computer, but they don't actually do any real portable computing with them. When pressed on the issue, the usual response is some bullshit "use it in my bedroom and then move it to the couch!"... like that's worth the price.

Laptops are cheaper than desktop computers. The cheapest 15" laptops cost about 3000 kr in Sweden, while desktop computers that suck maybe even more than the 15" laptop costs more than 3000 kr, plus you have to count the fact that the laptop has everything built in it, like the screen and speakers, so the cheapest desktop actually costs 4500 kr.
If you don't have a monitor, or speakers, then it's posisble (still not too likely though) that the cheapest laptop would be cheaper than the cheapest desktop. However if you want more horsepower than is needed to check your email and play farmville, then desktops can be 2-3x cheaper for the same performance.
Another good thing about laptops is that they get less dust on them, because you can fold it together. So if you worry about overheating, you might want to get a laptop. Desktop computers have a lot of large holes in them, which suck dust in them, and it overheats the components, and you can't suck the dust with your vacuum cleaner or you'll destroy your computer. In laptops, the holes are so small so the dust can't get in so easily.
And if you like upgrading your computer, you might also want to get a laptop, because they're easier to upgrade. You just have to open a small hatch under the computer to put in some more RAM, kinda like switching a new SD card into your camera. But on a desktop computer, when you're upgrading RAM, you'll risk destroying expensive parts, like your GTX 690, because of static electricity. That's another reason desktop computers can get expensive. That's 1000$ lost in a few seconds. If you would lose 1000$ in every minute, that would already be 60000$ in an hour.

HOLY SHIT, this is so wrong, i don't even know whta to say. Laptops get absurdly hot. My laptop can hit almost 90C at full load. A desktop with decent cooling would never get that hot, even if you literally never cleaned it.

What the fuck is wrong with you? Laptops are typically impossible to upgrade at all, except for ram and hdd. And you have to be retarded to destroy anything when switching some ram sticks.

I think it's funny how people assume that I'll primarily be using this for gaming. I don't have time for gaming these days, but I do like having the option available to me. Even more importantly, I don't play FPSes, Elder Scrolls, or other graphics-intensive games.
If you believe this guide, I can keep up with most modern games at medium to high settings.

If performance on these things isn't that important to you, then you grossly overspent. If it is, then you'd be far better off with a desktop.

We'll see. I travel a decent amount and I can't imagine leaving my computer behind. I also anticipate moving sometime in the next year or two and the space in my car is quite limited. Of course my computer is the top priority, but the more space it takes up, the more other stuff will inevitably be left behind.

I used a touchpad for eight years and didn't mind it and I'm planning on picking up one of these as soon as I can afford it.
