So I just registered, but uh, I'm colourblind so had a lot of trouble with the registration, mainly the "enter the first 5 characters of the 2nd red code" anti-spam thing. I had to ask someone for help lol. Just thought I'd let you know! :)

You can use one of the many eyedropper tools out there, such as this one: http://lifehacker.com/5060542/instant-eyedropper-grabs-any-color-from-your-screen To find out what color something on your screen is.

Perhaps that should be mentioned on the registration page?

The point remains we shouldn't have a system that can be difficult for colourblind people to use.

I have Autism. People have different disabilities. Some are blind. Some are deaf. Therefore anything that tries to use one of those senses, will be unusable by someone. The ideal is to have a standard system, like the one we have, and then a secondary system for use in the event someone is unable to use the first (since our system relies on visual information, the ideal is to have the backup use an audio file)

Oh if I overlooked a secondary method to register then I apologise. If I'd seen that I would of course have used it instead :)! I didn't mean to cause a stir - it's just I've never seen a colour dependent text anti-spam thing before, although I've seen many general text inputting ones.

AFAIK, there isn't one (as of now). As for colorblind users... The widget shows the colors. Unfortunately, that doesn't actually work: The color choices are such that red ones are almost completely invisible for someone with protanopia and has very bad contrast for someone with deuteranopia (the two most common forms of colorblindness). I suppose easiest way to make it more friendly to colorblind users would be to tweak the colors so that most color-blind users can tell the colors apart. And yeah, agree that there should be alternative method for those with bad vision.

You could just print the CAPTCHA several times, with color rotations on the copy. That's trivial for a computer to do so it wouldn't make it any weaker, and yet it'd make it a lot more likely that a colorblind user could see some of the copies.

I think there's a much surer way of having it work even for color-blind people, and that's by making it more based on contrast than on color. In other words, rather than have eg. red and green text (which is by far the worst possible choice because AFAIK red-green-blindness is the most common one), it should be something like yellow and black text (or at the very least dark blue). There's no way for anybody to confuse those two for the simple reason that they are at almost opposite ends of the contrast scale.

Actually, that's not the problem. The problem is that red on black is very bad choice because for someone with protanopia, it has extremely bad contrast. Especially if not at full brightness (like in this case). Even with red-green colorblindness, red and green aren't that bad to tell apart if one has samples to compare with.
