New Scrap Brain 2 zip, including transition to Scrap Brain 3. Not optimal since it was real time, but should be able to shave off some time with this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7K8YF2byio

Nice one, I saw that earlier and quickly made a TAS in 13 seconds. Turned out you can do the speed trick the exact the same way on the lower wheel (that you first jump on) and break through the left wall for a quicker finish.

I thought you might be able to do that, just thought it'd make more sense to do what I could and then bring it here to the experts. I'll see what I can manage later on. Great to hear it can do down so much further =D

Hey there! Me and my friend Razor are trying to make a ringless run of Sonic 1. And we stumbled upon a very awful place at the very beginning of the first act of Spring Yard. There is a spring that ejects Sonic up high right into the rings which cannot be avoided. In the beginning there are three crab badnicks, two buzzers and two monitors which we tried to use to gain height but one of the crabs doesn't spawn if you go a little bit offscreen to the right. And we believe it would give us enough height to go just above the ceiling to bypass those rings. Too bad we have no idea how to make that crab spawn and if it would give us really enough height. There also is a way to glitch through the floor using the speedshoes, right height and angle, but there is no way to use it to glitch through the wall. I wonder if anybody could help us with that, 'cause we think we might have missed some very tiny little detail that would help us somehow get past that. I'm just wondering, is there not a way to jump in between the rings to get to the first enemy, rather than bounding on the extra life box, would be worth trying to save those boxes for later if possible.

It's possible to keep the boxes for later use, I also tried gaining speed by hitting the boxes form below, nothing works and what's really bothering me is a disappearing enemy. Btw, we just made it without rings in SY2, but found other difficulties in SY3. Oh, my, what a zone.

I would be lying if I said my knowledge of this game was up-to-date, but I know the last time I tried there are several levels you can't clear without collecting a ring. Labyrinth 2 has the 10 ring box with the switch under it, and you can't activate a zip in the tube like Knuckles can. Scrap Brain 1 is another level that I can't think of any way through (the way I did it in the Knuckles TAS doesn't work because Sonic 1 handles rings differently). With that said, I think there's a way past those rings in Spring Yard 1 (credit to SprintGod because he demonstrated this first) - if I remember right, you have to jump in between the two boxes at the top so that you only break one and stand on top of the other one. Then if you jump on the speed shoe box and bounce on every single buzzbomber underneath you, you can just squeeze over the wall.

Oh, my, how on Earth didn't I think about that?! It's a brilliant way to gain extra height. It woked perfectly well, thank you so much mike89! For now we can complete the whole Spring Yard thing with Sonic. Well, I really hope we'll either find some new glitches or at least anything to get past rings in Labyrinth and Scrap Brain.

Don't worry, you'll find a way. For a moment, some of Sonic 2 zones where thought to be impossible. (ex: Casino night zone 2, Hilltop zone 2, Metropolis Zone 2) They're all possible now. ^^ Good luck on this, I'll take a look at it to see if I can help.

Well, for now we got everything but Labyrinth Sct 2. While we were still working on a full movie file I tried to see if there's anything I can do and the door mysteriously disappeard! I was so happy back then but now I found a problem - I just can't do that again and I have no idea about what triggered that. Here's the video. As you can see the door is open, and the monitor's still there. If only could someone help us with that, then we will be able to post a whole Sonic 1 ringless run. Link to video

did you get hit with a lot of rings ealier in the level? it's possible to glitch the level layout that way sometimes. but not much is known about how to do it.

That's the point. I didn't get hit anywhere and of course I didn't collect any rings (could've figured, since we are doing a ringless run). The only thing I remember is that I got invincibility, got upstairs and the door was there. I hit just a few badnicks on my way to that big room (which were worth 700 points). Then I got a shiled. I was trying to lose it sometimes, but reloaded, as nothing helped to glitch through the door. I tried poking at the monitors without breaking them and when I got to the door, it just wasn't there. Man, it's driving me crazy now! Wish I recorded a gmv of that x.x Anyway, I think that the door failed to spawn somehow, since I couldn't glitch the button to be pressed without breaking the monitor. I found a way to make a fish badnick fail to spawn if you go to the upper left corner and stand on the monitor for a bit. It works all the time. So now I guess we just need to find a trigger position to make the door disappear.

You don't have a gmv of that... but do you still have that savestate you loaded in the movie? It could be useful.

Some info: Link to video This works if you will go from X-coord F90 (F00 for camera) to F8F (EFF) Some objects are affected too (fish for example): 68E <- 68F (player) 5FE <- 5FF (camera) Maybe door can be erased like that?
but do you still have that savestate you loaded in the movie?
That save wasn't loaded in any movie, it was just savestate

Even outside of a movie it would still be useful -- variables in RAM can be inspected, for instance.

That's the worst thing about it. I thought at first that since I bumped into the solution on my first try, it would be easy to do it again and didn't save anything. Just that movie to show that it's possible. Man, I was dumb -_- I found that glitch in a few minutes after I started inspecting LZ2 and I was so confident it's therefore easy to do again. And now I've spent so many hours trying to repeat it and there' nothing, nada, zip. Jeez, I can't sleep because of this. It's haunting me o.o

Found that door's exact position (x=948 y=1A0) And spawn\delete border (78F <-> 790). Only problem - that door can't be deleted, I guess. Maybe it was triggered somehow, and not deleted...

That was a lot more interesting to watch than I'd expected it to be. Nice work! A pity luring that bee over in SYZ3 takes so long, though; that did drag on a bit.
