Re freeruns, I think the issue is that they are still of the "Mario runs around for a while" variety. We've all seen it a million times and it's just not as easy as it used to be to impress.
A modern freerun needs to tell a story. Elaborate choreography along with music, achieving humorous and visually obvious goals, giving mario our other elements of the world a new personality - these are concepts that can hold the discerning m64 connoisseur's interest.

I've seen that, and it's much better than most "look at this freerun I made" videos. But it's still far short of what I see as the true potential for m64 freerunning (and playarounds in general). This is not to diminish your hard work, or anyone else's - what I'm talking about hasn't really been done before at all, and it will take an amazing amount of effort if anyone is ever going to to do it. But I do think that to really knock the socks off a much larger audience, to acquire both mainstream popularity and approval from the naysayers earlier in this thread, I think it will take a radically more focused approach. Things like storyboards and scripts might get involved.
I'm not demanding this from anyone. I don't TAS m64, so obviously my opinion can be disregarded at no cost to anyone. I just think that if one really wants to rejuvenate interest in the genre, a much more deeply structured approach is required.

yup, that was it, thanks
the routes look very close to each other, but didn’t the Jap lose time at the last red coin? breaking the box with 2 punches seems to be much slower than Nahoc’s jumpkick

Hey guys, what's the current progress on the 120 star collaboration? And/or could someone post a link to a video of the latest WIP?
My friend recently played through the game for his first time and it made me interested in this project again. The free nico link someone posted ~15 pages ago doesn't seem to be valid anymore and my japanese is horrible at best.
Even the best player is limited by the speed of his fingers, or his mind's ability to control them. But what happens when speed is not a factor, when theory becomes reality?

I don't think there has been another WIP since that one. You (and everyone who likes to follow progress on this game) should probably just take the 10 minutes to get a nicovideo account for free, and then join the 120 star community linked by Nahoc above. You'll get email updates when new videos are added (or removed). Then you can see the latest community videos where it says "新着コミュニティ動画" on the right sidebar. The link under the video thumbnails goes to the full list which you can sort many different ways (number of views, date added, length, etc).
Anyway, the 25 star WIP still works once you are in the community. Though, if the embedded video below works for you (thanks Nach), then I guess you don't have to go through the trouble :P

For the record, the embedded video did not work until I registered, but thanks for that guide. I should've just gotten an account ages ago really.

Japanese TASers are currently at WF 100 coins. (It has to be redone because of luck manipulation). Some of the stars were improved, such as Lil Penguin lost, CCM 100 coins, and BitDW 8 red coins.

I make tool-assisted superplays, not tool-assisted machinimas.
I suppose there is a fine line, and I'm not at all suggesting you cross it. Nor am I suggesting that you should be the one to do the sort of thing I'm talking about. But I do think there's a lot of room for focus without going into things like voiceovers and extensive postproduction.
I was maybe misleading when I said "storyboards and scripts". I didn't mean there should be dialog, or sequences from different runs edited together in a way that couldn't happen in-game. I just meant that in order to give off a strong sense of purpose in a run, they might need to be thought out more fully in advance.

I'm sorry, but what a waste of a post. ChristianF23 found that 3 years ago and it can be found here.
No, but really, great job. This allows 3 more CCC/C-less stars: Slip Slidin' Away, Big Penguin Race, and Snowman's Lost His Head.

How does this help with Snowman's Lost His Head? I thought that one was CCC-less even in real-time. EDIT: oh right. Nevermind. That one will never be CCC-less.
And what's the CCC-less total now, 80? I tried looking around but can only find individual star strats and sm74 stuff.

The only way to obtain this star is to open it from the star select screen. That option doesn't exist unless you find the stars before it...though that makes me realize, it doesn't matter because red coins can't be gotten no matter what. ;(
