Hey guys, This is a TAS of the single player story mode in 007 Nightfire for GameCube. My main goal was to beat it as fast as possible, while still making the run entertaining to watch.
Just so there are no problems syncing the movie file, here are the dolphin settings:
I used Dolphin version 3.0-763. Everything is default for TASing with Dolphin(uncheck Dual Core and Idle Skipping and use DSP LLE recompiler for audio)except for the memory card settings. Options -> Configure -> Gamecube Tab, the Slot A and B should be set to <nothing>, and Port 1 should be Standard Controller.
Here are some notes on the run:
  • There is no sensitivity option, so I can't make turning around go faster.
  • at 15:38, I need to use the decryptor because even if I type in the correct numbers manually, the door does not unlock.
  • As with Goldeneye, it is faster to strafe left or right and walk forward than it is to just go straight
  • Jumping does not make you go faster on flat ground, only on stairs and inclines. However, the first level does not let you jump during the party scene.
  • On Chain Reaction, the Tactical Sniper's no scope accuracy is horrible, and I must quick scope in order to kill enemies. Near the end of the level, I use the sniper for enemies far away, because even if I aim a headshot with the P2K, it has limited range and does not hit them. I must kill them all because even if i leave one of them, when I grab on to the cable they kill me with full health and armor.
  • I am playing on the hardest difficulty.
  • I take damage to save time, especially noticeable on Island Infiltration and Countdown. (Although I try to maintain highest possible health).

Nahoc: Well, it seems like there are some minor un-optimized parts, but I guess it's tolerable for a 40 minutes TAS. I surely wish you improve it and submit a v2, though! The audience response is good and I too found it entertaining. Accepting this movie to be our first GC publication on the site. Good job!

I own a copy of Nightfire, but I was never able to finish because my disc, for whatever reason, refused to load a level halfway through, and even when I used cheats and skipped ahead to a later level it still wouldn't load properly. I'm looking forward to this run so I can get the proper James Bond Experience (TM).

I liked the "Shoot the skylight and kill that guy you didn't even bother to look even closely at" moment in the run.

I voted Meh. I am not skilled enough in 3D TASes to know for sure if this is suboptimal in any points from a purely speed perspective, but believe like others have said that there are examples where it could potentially be improved. I definitely thought that the entertainment was lacking and it is not due to game choice. There was a large amount of this movie that was just standing around not doing anything and some of the shots were less impressive than one would like. You don't necessarily have to quickly move to an enemy and shoot exactly as you get to their position but it would make it more entertaining and impressive even if the results are the same. My second complaint about the firing is that even in situations where you line up the shot far in advance and just stand around you don't even move to the exact position. Many situations you move to the position of the enemy before they are there, wait around, and then make a minor adjustment immediately before firing. In my opinion if you are going to go with the "line up the shot early" approach than you should at least smoothly line up the shot and not make minor adjustments later that look like the prior placement was an error or not optimal. I also believe, like others have said, that using more memory addresses could help improve the entertainment. You mention that accuracy is terrible without the quick scope, but with the use of memory addresses to guarantee accuracy I would imagine you could avoid popping up the scope and snipe without looking.

The FPS portions of Nightfire used a modified goldsrc (a.k.a. Half-Life 1), which is a Quake-lineage engine. I know you said that jumping didn't provide a speed boost, but did you see if speed accumulation through strafe-jumping worked in this title? It might not be possible with the GC controller sensitivity, but if it is, it would probably save a lot of time.

It's nice seeing an FPS speed run that I can actually follow. PC FPS runs on SDA and N64 FPS TASes are so twitchy and hyper that I can't even tell what's going on. Because I could actually follow things, this was by far the most entertaining FPS run I've ever seen.

It's a quite entertaining TAS, but it could be much more optimized, seeing some parts of the video. I didn't watch the whole TAS, so I'm not voting. I hope you try to optimize things and get a great TAS there :P

My two cents: I loved it, therefore I'm voting Yes. And of course it can perhaps be improved upon, isn't that the whole idea of TAS-videos being obsoleted? I say publish this one and see if anyone can make it better! A published video is more likely to inspire people than a rejected video, especially when it's this good!

I pretty much agree with what nesfreak said. The run shows off some neat tricks and has passable quality, I thought. It would also be nice to see an improvement, but in the meantime this is fine. I must say, though, there's a whole lot of vehicle segments in this game. That got a bit monotonous for me, but not too much to change my vote. Yes.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I watched this when it first came out and voted Yes because I found it to be one of the more entertaining FPS TAS's I've seen in a while. It seems like the comments against publication are focused on concerns about possible improvements; while there may be some improvable parts in the driving sections I find the answer to the question "Should this be published?" to definitely be Yes and I look forward to future runs which further improve the time. Is the problem that the run doesn't sync on an A/V sync revision? Or is it that our N64/GC/Wii superjudge is working on a run himself at the moment?

If the run is accepted, somebody that can build dolphin will produce A/V sync revision that it will sync with. The problem is seemingly that all the judges that handle Dolphin are apparently busy doing other things.

Well it also is a decent length TAS, a FPS, on Dolphin, and could be the first GC TAS on this site. I could see how it could take a while to judge.

I've tested on natt's latest A/V sync revision (3689S), and it syncs perfectly.

Nope. Nastier to handle runs tend to take time... The problem here is getting some judge to verify sync (because of Dolphin), not so much encoding.

In fact, at least 3 people have said they played it back without desyncs. This was a really easy one to sync. Just grab 3.0-763 from Dolphin's archive, change 4 settings (dual core, idle skipping, dsp lle, and no memory card), and play the movie.

The actual problem is that Nahoc doesn't want to judge it, and the other judges don't want to touch Dolphin.

I have also gotten it to sync. It is very very easy to sync. You can just download the correct branch and download the uploaded settings and it syncs with no problem. It's a shame that this has sat of the workbench for so long. I really want to see this go through.

For the benefit of anyone judging this: I haven't voted, but I enjoyed watching the movie. Whether it's published or not should probably depend on how improvable it is, which I don't know.

This looks rather rushed to me, it just looks like someone playing the game with an aimbot and a lot of the movement doesn't seem optimized. No.
