Post subject: Super Mario Advance 3, low-score

I had this idea of doing a run of Yoshi's Island with the lowest possible score. A couple of days after the idea, I started doing it. First try was with the SNES game, but then a limitation was found that the scoreboard only records five stars minimum, instead of zero. Tried SMA3, it went all the way down to zero! So after two weeks of occassional play, I'm stuck on World 2-5. The level is so darn difficult (to speedrun). I've tried the level for three days, and for the past few I've just given up on the run. Plus I had a filesystem mishap, a friend had the latest video file and I was able to play back that (and remake savestates, yay!); the biggest thing lost is a journal of each level and what was hard in them. As hard as it might be to believe, I watched the existing SNES run of Yoshi's Island after I started this. I noticed many places where the run could be significantly shorter. Anybody out there an expert on replaying earlier parts without losing the future parts? ;) So with those two blockers, I will just put out a WIP for all of you to watch if you feel like it, any continuation (or start over of the whole game) is not certain to be done by me, but I might. All right, since there is nothing else to do, I thought I'd FINALLY bring this up to shot. A long time ago, me and BOMF disscussed a 100% run of the GBA Yoshi's Island. Now, you may ask, why GBA? Well, according to Wikipedia, SMA3 has a special ending once getting 100 as all scores on all levels, AND there a extra levels for each world. So, once I have the first level planned, I will update here.

I wouldn't recommend it. Not only are you thinking of starting of one of the most difficult to TAS games, you're thinking of doing it with the hardest category. 1) I don't think Yoshi's Islands needs to be represented with both the SNES version and GBA, since GBA is mostly an identical port, excluding the few extra levels you mentioned plus the alternate ending 2) Have you listened to the music/sound compared to SNES? Horrible! 3) Maybe this is just me, but the GBA version looks slightly slower than the SNES. 4) Probably not the same glitches, or there are more glitches on GBA that are not as useful. I just don't think it's a good idea, despite there being the alternate endings and few extra levels.

Personally, if you're going for 100%, I say do the GBA version, just for the extra levels. Then it's a true 100%. But that's just my opinion.

I also think you should do the GBA 100% for the extra levels. Some of them make Kaizo Mario look easy.

Well, I've started anyway :P. So far, my trouble is getting the red coins in the underground part of 1-1 and being able to get over the wall. In order to, I would either have to hit the last enemy (Shy Guy) at the last possible frame, and hold A doing it, giving an extra, yet slower, boost over the wall, but I have not been able to do that yet. Then other way is to roll the Chomp Rock, but that would waste a bit of time. So, opinions?

There's that, in addition to so many other elements. Bag: In theory, yes he should be able to use the SNES WIP to compare to, since all the levels are ports. Again, which is why I'm against using the GBA, since you'd mostly be copying what spezzafer has done with his 100% WIP so far, and I'd so much rather wait for Baxter or Arne or Deign or whomever to finish the SNES 100% run.

Comical: If someone were to do a SNES 100%, like Sir VG said, then it wouldn't be a true 100%. BTW, never knew someone was already working on a 100% run for ths SNES. Will check that, thanks Bag & Comicalflop.

Not so much shooting itself, but calculating the optimal trajectories with reflections. When you need to shoot three eggs so that they can ricochet off the stuff and hit all the required spots while you run through without stopping and optimize your movement at the same time, it makes you spend very much time on testing, and I'd say more so than with Super Metroid.

The biggest obstacle is probably egg management. It's extremely difficult to find egg opportunities that don't waste time, and so you must consider all possible egg opportunities and carefully weigh your options: Do I need x number of eggs for the rest of the level? What about the next level? Should I lose x number of frames getting this egg? Will I save more than x frames by doing so? Etc. Trajectory of eggs is up there too. Specifically, 1-1 comes to mind when you must shoot a shy guy off screen (in the current 100% route, at least). Not only is it tough to hit the guy, you must hit him a certain way on a certain frame so that you can get at least three stars from him without slowing down.

I actually like the GBA extra levels a lot, so I aprove a 100% on them. since they're unlocked by finishing the game, you could just TAS the new levels
