Post subject: Why was the award for innovation retired?

I must have missed the memo for retiring the award for the most innovative TAS of the year (or, what's more probable, I don't remember the thread where this was discussed, assuming I saw it in the first place). Could someone remind me of the reasoning behind dropping it? Looking at past winners of this award, I think it was a quite sensible and informative award.

I agree, we really should have kept that award. Especially because after 10 years (no idea exactly how long we've been doing this) it seems like most new TASes are just a repetition of what we've seen already. Therefore it is definitely not easy to come up with new and interesting ways, that raise the entertainment value, for a TAS of most kind of games. If someone is really creative enough to create something completely new, we've never seen before, he should really get his chance to earn an award for this.

It was retired due to lack of actual innovation. The first year we had several tases where it made sense to have it. The next year the winner was very tenuous, the 3rd there was no candidates that even made sense. And honestly, I don't think we've had a year where there would be enough worthy candidates to make a contest out of.
It's hard to look this good. My TAS projects

Instead of having the Innovative TAS award as something that is given to a TAS every year through voting, what about making a new group for innovative movies, like the special stars and notable publication moons? Then movies could be added into that group that were innovative at the time, like moons are added for "notable" movies for the time they were published?

Or we could use moons for innovative TASes. I mean, aren't moons supposed to be for "This movie is notable in some unique way" anyway? Seems like an ideal application of that marker.

Just because there's an innovation award doesn't mean that it must be awarded each year, no matter what. If some year there are no feasible candidates then it can simply be not awarded that year. However, I think it should still exist to be given to those who do something special or unique, alongside the other awards. Just take nominations (with arguments why it's innovative). Even if there's just one nomination that deserves the award, give it to that one.

While I think that's probably the best way to go about it, it runs into the issue of someone (who?) needing to make the judgement of what's innovative enough and what's not. Which will leave people with fewer choices (because these are community awards.) And there's the change (certainty) that someone (or several someones) will be upset at any (many) particular judgement(s) and complain (loudly in every thread they can.)

You could say that from almost anything that involves someone making a decision. (Most prominently, perhaps, whether a TAS should be accepted for publication or not.) If someone gets upset, it's their problem. Nobody forces them to visit this website. And if they get troublesome, they can be warned and banned.

The difference between the example you gave and the topic at hand, is these are supposed to be the community awards, they're nominated and voted on by the community. And people tend to get upset if they feel that their "power" is being taken away. I stone cold do not give a damn one way or another. I'm just playing devil's advocate right now.

Nice job with not returning this nomination. Thanks, it's awesome.

I honestly cannot say if that's sarcasm or serious.

Haha, aren't you sure we HAD a perfect candidate this year?

Ah, sorry for not understanding your intent right away. Btw, I suppose you are referring to the pokemon TAS that injects arbitrary code and runs it? I agree that it should definitely deserve the award for innovation.

Sorry by being late, but I agree with Warp. I think It should be awarded when something reallly stood out of the ordinary. If nothing stod out of the ordinary, nothing is awarded. One time there was the multi games with one input(4 megaman games), one time the memory curruption(pokemon yellow), one time it was familly feud playaround. All of these were new at the time and were awarded. The new pokemon yellow movie is really new compared to others movies. It is the very first movie to actually program something(if I understood correctly. Nothing like that was done before.
