It's been a few months, so time for a progress update! We just completed world 4, and are starting with world 5. Some of these upcoming levels are quite long, but we'll try to keep working on it at a steady pace! We won't be posting too many more levels to avoid spoilers, but here is a short but sweet WIP of level 4-7: .smv Youtube

About what is the time spent TASing for each minute of the run? Would you guys be able to make a guess at that? I'm curious just how long it took you to do, say, the 4-7 you posted, which (discounting the goal roulette and score tally) lasted less than a minute,

Great question Boct @____@ tl;dr a few hours, to probably the 15-20+ (per person) hours that it took to do 4-7. I'll tell you about 4-7 in particular. Routing can be a gigantic nightmare in YI 100%. Just to give an idea of a few of the problems: there are several star clouds, and we had to time each one and figure out which was the quickest. Then we have to compare the possibility of shooting enemies with red eggs to get stars, and figure out how long it would take to get the requisite eggs. As you can see in the movie, we reach one star cloud by bouncing on an enemy, but lose a little bit of time fluttering. The time lost there came out better than the time lost getting more eggs or going with a different star cloud. And then, after all that work calculating the route, the star cloud did not give us as many stars as we had anticipated due to sprite overload. So we had to sacrifice an egg to free up sprites. Then we had to figure out how to do the next room with one less egg than our original route had planned for. It took hours before we finally settled on the boomerang chicken. And this is totally ignoring figuring out how many eggs we need to take into the next level (does it cost more time to get an extra egg here, or an extra egg later on in the next level?), the fact that every time we changed something the gusties spawned in a different location, which meant we had to re-luck manipulate them where we wanted, the 4th flower despawning if the screen positioning wasn't just right, etc etc etc.

Man, it sounds like a planning nightmare, but the results will be well worth it. The WIPs you guys have released are incredible.

Again, this blows my mind, entertainment-wise AND technical/planning-wise. I can't wait to see the rest!

It may be a bit too much if we posted progress updates every time we completed a level. NxCy's signature is generally up to date on our current progress though. Anyway, we completed level 5-2 today, so we'll be working on 5-3 now. (20 more levels to go!)

Watched the whole any% run, I can't just wait 100% speedrun of this. You are going to submit it at least this year, aren't you?

Hi Carl I saw your live last one on the level 5-5 of YI and towards the end of the live you viewed the level 4-4 and I noticed that he was sharply more improved than in your version any% of the game, do you go to improve your run any%?

There have been tons of improvements, including level-breaking glitches and new techniques, some of which will be shown in the 100%. I might start working on a new any% run once the 100% is done (or if I get extra time), possibly with ArneTheGreat. I can probably save several minutes in the current any%. For anyone who missed it, I streamed TASing 5-5 here: http://www.twitch.tv/carlsagan42/b/334690343

Just a question. Do you think that the run "glitched" can be improved? If yes you also go to improve it?

And as i was trying to find possible improvements for the glitched run, i noticed something in the auto-scroll room (the one before the bowser fight). i saw that the door entry wasn't optimized so i did it myself and it saved 4 frames!
Warning: Might glitch to credits I will finish this ACE soon as possible (or will I?)

I just found the improvement, I didn't create a new TAS.

I think the final bowser fight can be improved by a little bit too; I didn't really understand how the eggs spawned when I made it. These are just small optimisations though. I don't know of any new tricks or route changes that can be used.

The current any% TAS is probably one of my favorite of all time in terms of entertainment, would saving those minutes detract from the entertainment at all? (i.e. with the 1-1 walking or stuff like that) Either way definitely looking forward to the 100%, what kind of final time are you expecting?

Hi there, I'm glad you liked the any% TAS. The improvements I have in mind will not detract from its entertainment, and in fact might even add. Fortunately most of the new tricks ArneTheGreat and others have discovered have not only been fast, but also very cool :P Reconsidering though, I think I will continue with TASing one of the hacks after finishing 100% instead of revamping any%, though my plans could change (or I might work on both). As far as a time estimate for 100% goes, we will just have to wait and see :P We are currently in 5-7. We had a pretty big stumbling block here as the route is very difficult and we have had to test many different paths. Hopefully we'll be into world 6 shortly! I'll likely stream TASing again soon.

After messing around with some stuff thanks to the lua script, I can say with some certainly that the entertainment value is going to increase significantly. :D Also, Carl, the shy guy up roll looks to be a normal effect, so yes, it's going in all of my runs ever.

Just to give a very brief update, we are currently in 6-6. I think this will be done within one month, two at the latest.
