Ah, whoops. My bad. Let's see: Both routes play through 8 stages, but the second route has to reset 2 fewer times. The second route plays through all of 4-1, while the first route plays through 3-1 up to the warp. So it's down to which of the following is faster: - Playing through 3-1 up to the warp, plus resetting two times. - Playing through 4-1 completely. I just watched videos of both levels, and it seems pretty close. Further testing might be required.

I still wonder... Wouldn't a Warped run be almost the same as the NES version of the same category...?

I think it is different enough to warrant a publication, especially in a world where we publish SMBA2.

How bout we do a co-author run. Oh, wait, I can't recruit anyone on this forum. Or so I think.
So yea, how's it going? Currently TASing: Nothing

In 1-3, before the log bridge there is a potion in the 2nd veggie spot. Have you tried grabbing this one instead of the one you get? This way you wouldn't have to wait for the shyguy to move to pluck it up.

True, but the potion is closer to the log.

The ROM I'm using has a different checksum, it still syncs nonetheless. The NES version can be beaten in 10 levels. (1-3 > 4, 4-2 > 6) The SNES version can be beaten in 9 levels. (1-3 > 4 r, 3-1 > 5, 5-3 > 7) And finally this version in 8 levels. (1-3 > 4, 4-2 > 6 r, 5-3 >7) There would be three branches: - "Warped" (Beat the game in the least levels possible) - "100%" (Get all 100 advance coins) - "Yoshi Challenge" (Get all 40 Yoshi eggs) (Play from SRAM)

@YoungJ1997lol: I'm very sure that it is permitted to recruit and co-author for a run. Though now I wonder who you were going to ask to co-author the game with you. @PikachuMan: That actually sounds like a very good idea! I'd be on board for the branch choices, yes! I'll post my WIP for "100%, Peach-only" later on.

If you are starting from SRAM you could combine these two goals. Advance Coins do still appear in levels after being picked up in previous runs through the level. They just appear grayed out.

The Yoshi Challenge is unlocked after beating the game. Combining goals may take a little extra time, but what a good idea.

In that case, would it be feasible to combine all three goals? Have a single movie that first beats the game as quickly as possible using warps, thus unlocking the Yoshi Challenge. Then go through all 20 stages, getting all A-Coins and Yoshi Eggs. This would mean that 8 stages would be played twice in the run. The movie goal could still be nicely summarized as "Gets all A-Coins and Yoshi Eggs as fast as possible (from blank save data)", since you need to first beat the game as fast as possible in order to get all Yoshi Eggs as fast as possible.

Combining the second two goals with the first doesn't create any interesting routing decisions, since you ignore A-coins until the second run through. If they're separate they may as well be separate TASes so they're easier to update.

Ha, good idea, it never even entered my mind. In response to Patashu; do we know that there are no A coins that would be quicker to pick up in the warps route vs the potion/egg collecting yoshi challenge route? If there are no A coins to pick up before the second run through I would sadly have to agree.

A similar thing on Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, combining a lot of goals. Fastest to 300,000 points on Japanese version and beat the Super Players game. Anyways, good luck.

I don't mind co-authoring. I am working at trying to test out the Warps idea. World 1-1 seems slow by 5 frame on my version... I will keep working on it though. Also how did you do that trick with the carpet?

Easy. Jump on a bird-carpet thing, get rid of the bird, go left, go right, hover JUST over the next bird-carpet thing, and pick up the bird. If done right, you should be running faster.

It's quite a slow start ^^ It seems that it can be easily obsoleted too. There might be a faster way, can you find it? ;)

Hello. I'm the author of the low score TAS mentioned earlier (which if it isn't obvious, is not really a speed-oriented TAS, it's a demonstration like the SMB3 low-score TAS it's a response to), and pretty familiar with version differences in most Mario handheld remakes. Nice to see that this thread already resolved the common mistakes I've seen about this game (not using all 4 warps, and thinking there's a need to go through the entire game twice for Ace Coins and Yoshi Eggs). Anyway, from the 1-1 WIP posted, has it been tested whether picking up the POW block is really worth it? I thought Toad only ran faster with an item in previous versions. Also, I think 100+40 (either from a clean file or SRAM) makes a better full-game run than simply all levels or 100% Ace Coins, since it shows off more of the GBA-version additions.

I can confirm that Toad runs faster with a POW block in this version ;) Any other item doesn't seem to work, at least enemies and vegetables don't work as far as I know. Do you know if some glitches still work? I've tried some of them from the NES version without success: riding a vegetable through a floor, getting hit to make an enemy go through the floor too, or "double jumping" with the help of an enemy... I know that it's still possible to go faster while riding a magic carpet.

The only glitches I know still work in SMA1 are jumping off ladders/chains (and the associated running over the ceiling to skip most of 7-2), and balancing mushroom blocks on non-solid foreground-layer objects such as door outlines. I've never done any of the NES-version TAS glitches, though, so it's possible I simply didn't know how to activate something else. Also, there are enough new game mechanics (giant enemies, new ways of producing hearts, those carryable star/heart/bomb parachute-things, etc) that I wouldn't be surprised if some new glitches have been introduced.
