This is the story of a man who goes on a little trip...

I've always admired Heisanevilgenius's Family Feud TAS. So, when I found out that Jeopardy! uses the same broken word recognition algorithm, I just had to try my hand at it.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: FCEUX 2.1.5
  • Playaround
  • Achieves highest possible score
  • Achieves highest theoretical score (if a score cap didn't exist)
  • Manipulates luck
  • Sacrifices time for entertainment
  • Made using only lua scripts, no manual entry
  • Tells a story and ignores the questions in the game

Comments

When I began making this TAS, I had planned to do it like Heisanevilgenius did, namely, come up with silly answers to the questions asked. I decided to throw in a little story at the beginning to set up the piece. Since I was concerned the story bit might not go over well, I published a one-round WIP to get some feedback. I was completely surprised when everyone said that they loved the story bit but, once it got to actually answering the questions, the TAS became dry. So I reworked what I had to make the entire TAS story-driven, completely ignoring the questions (answers?) altogether. What came out of this is a curse-laden bashing of the game and everyone in it. Oh, and also a surprise twist at the end. :)
The rerecord count for this TAS completely off. There are two reasons for this. First, I had planned to use the making of this TAS as a way to learn lua scripting. To that end, I wrote a lua script that would play through the entire TAS from start to finish. There are numerous points where luck manipulation occurs. This includes manipulating the questions in each round to be the ones I want, manipulating the daily doubles to in the highest rows possible, and manipulating the other players so they don't jump in before I'm able to. Most of this I did using script recording the specific button presses needed to get my desired result. Then I added those button presses to the master script so it didn't have to go hunting for the right outcome. The most extreme example of this was when I tried to force both daily doubles in the second round into the top row. I had a script pounding at it for over a month before discovering that the game won't allow it.
The second reason why the rerecord count is off is that I didn't realize in FCEUX you need to start recording your movie before you begin TASsing. Luckily, since the entire TAS is run using only one lua script, I lost almost no work in the end.
Even with all the scripting and luck manipulation, the hardest part was writing the answers to the questions (or is that the questions to the answers?). There are two lines of 18 characters, and the answer requirements range from very easy (two letters) to quite strict (10 letters). Trying manipulate each question into something funny (and I'm certainly no comedian), that fits into a story and meets both the answer requirements and the space limitations, was easily the most difficult part of making this run.
Apart from pauses in answering questions for readability (and the fact that the answers are longer than they need to be), and entering a non-blank name, all other play in this TAS is done as quickly as possible. Speed could be improved by manipulating away any clapping after questions are answered and any animation showing other contestants trying to buzz in.
One final note: You'll notice at the beginning I choose Quarter-Final instead of Semi-Final or Final Round. This is because, when it comes to TASsing, there is no change in difficulty in each of the rounds. The Quarter-Final round pits you against three other opponents (instead of only two for the other rounds), which gave me more people to bash. Also, you need to use a password to get to the Final Round, and there was simply no justification to do so.

feos: #2166: Heisanevilgenius's SNES Family Feud in 06:46.71 has the highest entertainment rating of all non-speed-oriented movies on our site. This submission refers pretty much to the concept showcased there, but I don't know what exactly made it deserve such a bad feedback. Maybe the length has something to do with it, maybe the overall quality of the game. Gameplay similarity throughout the run, or failing to present the concept in an authentic way... I don't know what to propose for future. Try coming up with more innovative concepts.
Rejecting this playaround for bad feedback and unvaultable goal.

Honestly, I found it kind of dull compared to the Family Feud TAS. Maybe it's due to the slower pace of this game, it's due to the answers not being as interesting or funny imho, or it's just the fact that the game drags on a lot longer than Family Feud. Either way, voting no.
http://www.youtube.com/Noxxa <dwangoAC> This is a TAS (...). Not suitable for all audiences. May cause undesirable side-effects. May contain emulator abuse. Emulator may be abusive. This product contains glitches known to the state of California to cause egg defects. <Masterjun> I'm just a guy arranging bits in a sequence which could potentially amuse other people looking at these bits <adelikat> In Oregon Trail, I sacrificed my own family to save time. In Star trek, I killed helpless comrades in escape pods to save time. Here, I kill my allies to save time. I think I need help.

Meh. I was expecting a lot more from the kind of TAS. Now I somehow feel like I've lost a halfhour watching "youtube poop" (YTP).

You made the answers string together to form a narrative. The part where the TASer took over the character was unexpected, and the ending was perfect. I admit, I liked it.

And, game shows everwhere are crying now because you broke the best. Though, Watson did it before. At least he didn't abuse a text parser, he was a text parser.

It's a good idea, but compared to Family Feud and Brain Age this game is just too slow-paced.

This game is "dedicated to my father" who I bet is turning in his grave because his son's game is being used by a guy to write swear words and sexual references. Now that's funny! Anyway, the run was ok for a bit, but clocking in at 25 minutes, it got a bit too long for the shtick to stay fresh. Voting no.

I laughed many times throughout the run, but this version of Jeopardy sucks, a lot! I would prefer another version of Jeopardy that is faster paced (the amount of "cutscenes" is very annoying) and would result in a much shorter video. 25th anniversary is one that comes to mind, also NES, though there are others. I vote no for that reason.

This game's art is really awful. Also the run is uninteresting, so I'm voting no.

Yeah, I was afraid of this reaction. I agree, it's slow and the graphics and sound suck. I had gotten far enough with it that I felt I needed to finish it, but I can understand if this doesn't make the cut. mathgrant, I'm really glad you enjoyed it, and dunnius I'm glad I was able to make you laugh. Hopefully this can make a few more people chuckle before it disappears. :)

Glitchy: yes boring: yes innovative: idk vote: no Now. Lets. Talk. In. That. Very. Slow. Voice. Sorry that's what killed it for me, the loading and how long I had to sit, comparison to the snes Family Feud that was short, and (somewhat) funny.

Did the algorithm make it necessary to misspell Jeopardy in the answer you gave that had the word in it? Anyway, I had to stop watching from boredom after awhile. This game is not meant to be TASed, I think.

jlun2, I'm glad you liked it! Thanks for the support. Shyft-, no, that's just something I missed. After pouring over this for so long, it's a little embarrassing that I missed something so simple.

I like to imagine that Tas either has an accent that causes "jeopardy" to be spelled "jeapordy", or is so high off of drinking Tina's pills that he can't spell.

Works for me! If I recall, Jeopardy is misspelled twice in the run. I forgot to comment about that. I was going to say that the version of the game sucks so much that it may as well be spelled that way.

I vote yes. I think it was entertaining enough to at least get into the vault. In fact, I'd be shocked if this didn't even make it to the vault, because it's a clever (albeit slow-paced but not exceedingly) playaround of a game with a lazy answer validation algorithm, and doesn't rip off the Family Feud TAS. Overall, I think the quality & entertainment value here is easily as good as or better than the average vaulted run, and I'm having trouble understanding why it's being judged so harshly. (edit) just read c-square's comment below. I guess it makes sense that playarounds are ineligible for the vault, but I think it's unfortunate that this is probably gonna be gruefood. =P oh well, at least it's on youtube.
Oh, play it cool. Play it cool. Here come the space cops.

Thanks. Unfortunately, since it has speed/entertainment trade-offs, it doesn't qualify for vault status. If I had just put the minimal letters required, it might make it to the vault, but that'd be even worse from an entertainment perspective.

I admit I didn't watch the whole thing. I like it in terms of the concept, and I think it can work. But I just wasn't entertained. The Family Feud answers were so random and goofy that I couldn't help but laugh. These were just kind of meh. The narrative bits just kind of fell flat. Maybe it gets funnier later, but it would be nice if it was funny throughout the whole thing.

The story was fairly interesting, but the slow entry speed for the letters put a crimp in it. I found myself getting more interested in the actual questions than the story. The sections where letters were erased right after they appeared were particularly hard to follow. But the concept is still strong, and the effort put into it was fairly clear. And I did enjoy the questions. So, my overall vote is "Meh." Maybe if you could find another version that has this type of parser, it would work better. Edit: If this does get rejected, perhaps it could join the Gruefood Delight collection? The technical merits would certainly qualify it for that in my book.

I also enjoyed this. Despite the game being really bad and slow, I was entertained by the movie's story for the duration of the run. In fact, that's all I paid attention to during Double Jeopardy. I'll vote Yes, even though it isn't looking good for this run to be published.

With recurring internet problems here lately -- even so bad that my favorite pass time hobby (watching youtube videos, basically all forms, including TAS's uploaded on there) has become impossible to crave as videos load slower than a snail going around the world (exaggeration sure, but it seems like it :/) -- it's excited me slightly that this would not be a rip off of the SNES Family Fued and yet have a story this time around. Interesting concept, but back on to my point, the little bit I could load of this (about 3 mins of the run) was interesting as I said earlier in the sentence lol, but the game is just... bad. To me, it feels like it's not worth my time letting the run load all the way through to watch it (which normally would not be a problem, but I'm on a borderline dial up connection for a few days until they fix this)... I'd let it in for a vault thing if this could be an exception, always exceptions for certain things and it definitely will entertain someone if they can bear to wait out the time between answering (or story telling) -- but it's not entertaining me. It's not the story, as I'm sure it's interesting from what I can wager... Just the game. For your time invested and for the interesting concept, I'll give it a meh.
