How long was Lezard's run? 47:30 or so? he did his run on the EU version so that translates to a time of about 58:12 doesn't it? My best time is about 53 minutes There are a lot of shortcuts he misses If you use every one you might get sub 50 EDIT: Wow... um... he did finish in 47:30 after all :/ OK, he still missed some shortcuts *Many times, walks around spikes rather than going through them *You can get the hover fuel in one of the cabins in Level 1 - it takes less time than getting it in the cabin in Level 3 *Taking too long on 1st boss *Missed shortcut in Level 2, twice *In Level 4 cabin, takes the long way instead of going over water *Level 5 Boss, I think can be beaten using a trick similar to the grenade glitch, it's on David Wonn's glitch page though I haven't attempted it yet *In Level 5 (after getting the Diving Bell) he doesn't hold the A button while moving through the water; this causes you to go faster (I think he doesn't do this, It was a while since I watched the movie) *Level 7 - the room where you shoot right, fall down, shoot left, fall down, shoot right fall down... until you reach the bottom-right corner - you can save time by shooting away the wall and wallclimbing up onto it, turning downwards, and shooting down. Do this twice to reach the bottomleft corner and then go right (I think... I'm trying to describe this from memory) I will watch it again to see if I can find anything else

Lezard's run was made with VirtuaNes which support PAL.So no 58:12

If you fall down you can avoid dying if you pause the moment (or a bit up in the air) you hit the ground. Can save a few seconds at one place I think.

ah - i guess I'm out of my league here. I'm doing a fun little run but I dont think I'll be breaking any records. It would help if I could see lezards run, but the site is down.. is there a torrent or anything? in any case i'm going to finish it and hopefully get some suggestions on it. by the way whats the going over the water thing you mentioned for level 4? Thats where I'm going, if there is a trick i'd like to know it

In the Level 4 and Level 7 cabins, if you are damaged by one of the enemies, you can immediately walk over the water/lava without falling in. The game seems to mistake the water/lava for ice rather than an autodeath floor. In Level 4 you go to the bottom-right corner of the platform you start on, wait for the enemy to follow you into the corner and damage you, then move right and down across the water. In Level 7 let yourself be hit by the enemy's shot before crossing the lava. From the start, go right, down across the lava twice, left, up across the lava, right, up, right, up, and then up across the lava.

wow, that really helps a lot, thank you! I was aiming for no damage but I guess I'll have to make exceptions here. That and I already took damage once...but if i remember correctly its impossible to avoid getting hit in this one spot, this skill spawns above you as you enter the room and drops a bomb into your sprite before you can move. weak as hell but its ok.

Whooo hoo! finally finished! Got stranded in level 5 and had to record level 7 like 4 times but it all worked out in the end. My final time was 46:58. I know I could take like 1:00 off that easily by refraining from all the cocky backwards jumps and noodling around with enemies, but sometimes you can't resist :)! I'm gonna submit it now, hope you all get a chance to see it.

OK, I redid it and its actually posted, my fmv length from reset to movie stop was 43:00! There's no damage taken except for shortcuts, and unlike my first attempt there are no wasted shots. I feel that it cant be done any faster, maybe like a few seconds but really I think ~43 minutes is the minimum. Please watch it when you have the time and let me know what you think! :) -devin

The length is actually 43 minutes and 57.95 seconds. If you see it as 43:00, you are probably suffering from the Famtasia bug that blip has already submitted a patch for.

alas. you are right. i was using the unpatched version because i didn't want to switch horses midrace. I stand corrected - but it's still 3 minutes faster than my previous time, though still quite long.

I don't think the backwards jumping and noodling around was all that bad, although I think you should have done it more often...those slowdowns that appeared were annoying. Great time attack. This is one of the games we've been looking forward to. :) Anyways, here's three big things we noticed\talked about when we watched... In level 1, the car goes in the water, where-as we think it'd be faster to get out of the car on the platform that's just in the water (IE, you can climb out of the water but never get in it). In level 2 while on the way to level 4 it's probably faster to use the shortcut that was used to get to level 7. Here's an interesting idea for level 6...apparently, when you use a continue you'll be at the start of the stage. I'm wondering if it's possible to exploit this to get out of the water faster. If I recall, the level 3 boss is the last time the mega gun was used, so you wouldn't need to conserve it, plus you can fairly quickly kill yourself outside of the vehicle. Heck, it might even be faster to use this to get out of a few other levels (depending on how long it takes to kill yourself 3 times) like levels 3 and 7. Unfortunately, that might make the video look pretty ugly...

Hi. New to the forum. Thanks bisquit, blip, and everyone else here that works to make this cool emu stuff available to us all. I have a question about the new Blaster Master movie (as well as at least half a dozen other movies on bisquit's site). When I try to open the rom, I get a dialog that says something to the effect of, "This is maybe illegal image, Famtasia can't run this game." So.. am I out of luck? Surely others have run into this. I have version 5.1 of the emulator, so any advice would be appreciated. Note: If you suspect this has anything to do with the rom, then please be discrete in your answer as I am NOT asking for roms.

You probably have a bad rom. However, on this forum we can't discuss where to find roms.

Well, I dunno if that's the case, but I'll look into it. The thing is that these roms run fine in FCEU..

Andypro, I'm afraid I can't provide any rom information (obviously) but in particular the actual rom that I have; it has been renamed several times, I can only imagine it is the most common US version, probably an image of the cartridge I got at toys 'r us when i was 10. Gigafrost: Thanks for the kind words! I was afraid it would bomb. :) For number 1 suggestion, I think you are absolutely right, I hadn't remembered how fast you swim at that point. It might save as much as 30 seconds, but I can't remember if you can get out of the water onto a raised platform as the dude. For number 2, I'm not quite sure what you're referring to, I'll watch the video but if you could be a little more specific it'd help.. :) And number 3, it probably would save a little time, but until I watch it or try it I wouldn't be able to tell whether the ugliness would be offset by the amount of time saved. You're right about the gun though, theres no need for it after the robocube boss. Did you actually watch the whole thing? I know its quite long...of course I find it exciting because i remember every move!

Yup, I watched the whole thing. I wouldn't have noticed the water thingy in level 1 nor the shortcut in level 2 had my brother not pointed it out. I still have a few days left on my Camtasia trial version so let me try and give demonstrations for all my suggestions (although I think you'll only really need the second example). The shortcut is in the green room. When you come out of the door that's the path to level 3 and you shoot the blocks, you can go up a "floor" and left. Yarr...my directions suck. Hopefully you'll be able to watch the video... >_< As for the third thing I suggested...well, again, it'll make it ugly. If you're going to contemplate trying to put that in then it's probably pointless to do the aesthetic stunts. I have no idea whether that would make the video more fun to watch or less fun. :\ Anyways, here's the recorded samples: Level 1 water demonstration: (about 1.02mb) http://www.kraftfam.org/~erk/misc/example1.avi Level 2 shortcut: (about 2.38mb) http://www.kraftfam.org/~erk/misc/example2.avi Continue sample: (about 3.12mb) http://www.kraftfam.org/~erk/misc/example3.avi

Hey all, I'm a newbie here, but I've been working on a Blaster Master run and I have a few comments. My run has many of the changes that have been mentioned implemented (such as jumping out of the tank early in level 1), and I think at this rate I'll be able to improve upon your run. I didn't realize it until now, but it seems that VirtuaNES is frowned upon (that's what I've been using), so I'm wondering if I should switch over to Famtasia. I've had some problems with Famtasia that I haven't had with VirtuaNES, but I've also been really lazy trying to figure them out. Also, this is a totally retarted question, but if I'm using VirtuaNES and the American version of the game, should I set it to NTSC or PAL? Thanks all for your help, I'm looking forward to having some nice competition to see who can get the best Blaster Master time. :)

The USA versions of games are NTSC. PAL is the European version (and Australia). So set it to NTSC. And please correct me if im wrong. I like playing, not all the technical sh*t ;)

Also, there's been some updated patched released for Famtasia, which improve its usability by quite a lot. http://tasvideos.org/famtasiapatch.php Just leave all the boxes checked the way they currently are, and click the download button.

I'm glad there is some interest in this game! Please go ahead and make an attempt at my time, but know that if you beat it I will be snapping at your heels! :) If you're planning on submitting to this site, though, you'll need to use famtasia as it is required by the rules (I think). I use Nesten usually to emulate but I got used to famtasia, so its probably just best to go with that. Hope you're not too far... Its such a long game that you can't just 'make a run' some night and beat your time, it takes a good while to get everything right for 44 minutes straight...

This video is awesome. For an improvement, all but one thing I would have suggested has been mentioned. Kill more enemies. This game is very prone to slowdown, as we can see at some points in the video. This could be avoided simply by destroying more enemies instead of just avoiding them. Squeezing between their shots shows skill, but killing them prevents slowdown and would save several seconds. I'm just happy that the music isn't gimped in this video. That's the best part of the game!
