There is a big fighting game tournament called Evo 2013. Nintendo attempted to ban Super Smash Bros. Melee from being livestreamed on twitch.tv.
Regrettably, we’ve just been informed by Nintendo of America Inc. that we do not have permission to broadcast Super Smash Bros. Melee for Evo 2013. In light of this, we must make the following changes to the schedule.
However, a reddit + social media war ensued and Nintendo then allowed the game to be livestreamed online by the tournament organisers.

Yes, that's what happened. Just going to link this. http://evo.shoryuken.com/2013/07/09/changes-to-evo-2013-smash-schedule/

I never would've expected Nintendo (of America) to do this. I thought they didn't care about livestreams or anything like that because they understand it's free advertising for them.

I really can't understand what exactly they expected to gain from a stunt like that. (It's stupid, really. Such an event is, in fact, completely free advertisement for that game in particular, and all the games in the series in general, and even for Nintendo's consoles. And they look the gift horse in the mouth...) Or is this a case of Nintendo's lawyers acting without consulting any higher-ups (or, alternatively, convincing the higher-ups to go forward with this, and the higher-ups being too busy with other things to care too much)?

This wouldn't have been the first time for this to happen. Link One theory is that they're disallowing all live streaming as a matter of principle. The other is that they are concerned that streams like this could make their games look too difficult and shy away new gamers. Really? Didn't they just try to ban Let's Plays of Nintendo games being given money on YouTube? And then they backed out from that? Nintendo doesn't understand they need the publicity. The are finally understanding that they need marketing to sell their system and games and they aren't actually doing that. They need all the good publicity they can get. Plus, it's a 12 year old game, it's not like they can still make money of that.
