Submission Text Full Submission Page
This is a submission for Super Mario Advance using only Princess Peach with warps.

Game Information

The Super Mario Advance version of Super Mario Bros. 2 includes several new features such as the addition of the enemy Robirdo (a robotic Birdo acting as the boss of World 3, replacing Mouser), the addition of the Yoshi Challenge (in which players may revisit stages to search for Yoshi Eggs), and an all-new point-scoring system (a first for the game). Graphical and audio enhancements were also added in the form of enlarged sprites, multiple hit combos, digital voice acting, and such minor stylistic and aesthetic changes as an altered default health-meter level, boss-order, backgrounds, the size of hearts, Princess Toadstool being renamed to the now-standard "Princess Peach," and the inclusion of a chime to announce Stars.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: VBA RR v23.6 svn461
  • Uses a Suboptimal character
  • Uses Warps
  • Aims for fastest time
After seeing this submission, #4055: turgish's GBA Super Mario Advance "princess only" in 11:37.87 I decided to take this into my own hands. Despite having spend about less than 24 hours on this, it's pretty solid. I saved 03:16.46 over that submission and also beats adelikat's NES version TAS by about 8 seconds.
More to add later.

feos: Judging!

Nach: Updated submission with new one from author(s).

I voted yes because this is most certainly not one of the most boring runs ever published. However, I have to question the rationale behind the self-imposed "challenge" of using Peach only. Applying a grandfather clause to the NES version is ok (ie. there has always been a Peach-only version of the NES version, so it's an acceptable sub-category forever.) However, is it sensible to expand that clause to a remake? Does a Peach-only run add enough variation to make it justified to have a run with such a semi-arbitrary limitation? That being said, if the general consensus is that this is ok, I won't have any problem with it.

I thought it was a solid run. I liked seeing the slightly different route and the trick to fall back to 5-3 so you could warp to World 7 which I thought was pretty clever. Good job on this, GoddessMaria. Voting Yes. EDIT: Seeing Warp's post above, I want to add that I did find this entertaining enough to be published on its own. If this does get published, I think a run that aims for fastest time using the fastest characters should be able to be published alongside it.

Honestly, I don't like either the game version (port) nor the category choice. Yes, grandfather clause, but I don't think that should apply to ports. Voting no.

This product contains glitches known to the state of California to cause egg defects. <Masterjun> I'm just a guy arranging bits in a sequence which could potentially amuse other people looking at these bits <adelikat> In Oregon Trail, I sacrificed my own family to save time. Wait, so does the grandfather clause apply (to other existing runs) or not? I asked before, but never gotten a response. :P

The port issue is something I wanted to bring up as a general question. But I am unsure how or what to ask.

It's my opinion that this port of SMB2 is absolutely terrible. Also the run was quite boring to watch. No vote.

I hate to come out as a whiner, but it seems to me as if a bit of the votes are based on the game being a port of an older game... I'm pretty sure that it says if you found the "Movie" entertaining. Not do you think this port is good or bad. Not all ports are the same and it isn't exactly fair to mark them all as such. ...I'm sorry, but that's how I am feeling about it.

Er....if it makes you feel better, I vote "No" because it wasn't as entertaining as the NES run. The NES version had glitches (see the first boss, for example) that made it stand out. This "feels" more like a glitchless, princess-only run, and just seems slower, despite being 8 seconds faster than the NES run.

I didn't vote no because the game was a port. I voted no because I wasn't entertained while watching the run. (Which might well be partially because I don't like this game/port, but the fact remains I wasn't entertained).

Why are you keep calling them "Speedruns"? That can mean real time, or tool-assisted. It's not helped by your video logo too. =/

This doesn't offer anything over the NES version, and I'm convinced some parts could have been done faster in real time.

Eye-rolling over the game's voices reached critical mass when you used the key, and Peach exclaimed "just what I needed!". Thanks Dora, I wondered what the hell I was going to use this big giant obvious key for. Furthermore, now that I've figured it out myself, your confirmation of that fact has really helped me identify with your plight. I'm off to amazon to buy myself a Peach plush right now!! In 7-1, could you have used the mushroom block to kill one of the sparks, so you could start your jump's duck-charge earlier?

Short enough that its shortcomings didn't keep me from finding it entertaining. Yes vote, with a hope that another one comes out soon with Masterjun's improvement.

I liked 5-3 in this run, but there is a sense in which I must agree with Mothrayas. You mean you actually have to fight Birdo in 7-2 to get the key, and can't just glitch to that screen? What a horrible remake. :) Voted Meh.

it's good that tas is written there, but technically it still says "tool assisted speedrun speedrun".

Instead of snipping GoddessMaria, why don't you put effort and help add-on to the run by saving more time just like the Kirby Team. I mean she has shaved a-lot of time off from the 11:37.87! And if you think it's rubbish what she has done, well your a total muffin (word not allowed to be said but it starts with a p). Check out the things you are questioning and do it yourself.
