There are these very old testruns to help you get an idea of the routes for three-fourths of the courses: Weatherton's Flower Cup test run Weatherton's Star Cup test run Weatherton's Special Cup test run (which was also submitted as an any%) The rest of the information is scattered throughout this thread.

I noticed that the game selects 3 characters at random to be the "winners" while the rest of the characters will always be "losers" (5th and lower). What determines this? Is there a way to manipulate this to be beneficial? Edit: How does the game determine the Ranking for the AI characters? Can it be manipulated to be beneficial?

It's bloody hard to optimise, and most of the people who are really interested in this game prefer playing regularly, and also wouldn't stand for anything less than perfect. Michael Fried has done a lot of non-sc TASes, don't know if anyone has linked to them before but they're on his site wrvids.com (but iirc he said a while back that he didn't really want to do it again as it's such hard work). If anyone happens to want to have a go, probably best to look at this thread. Fried links to his TASes, as well as explains how to do an mt frame perfectly. P.s. There's no point in asking DaBlackBoi1 to do it, he barely understands the game and wouldn't do a full TAS full justice (also he tried to join the site with times he got using tools on an emulator, so I automatically dislike him).

I'm on the 2nd lap of Kalimari Desert. Had to take a break a bit ago since I got stuck on the final jump. I'll try some more tonight. Once I finish this race, the rest shouldn't be nearly as bad. It's strange how the "easiest" cup (mushroom) to play is the hardest to TAS. One thing that would help is if we figured out how to determine what item would be provided for a given frame. But I wasn't able to find this. If someone could find either the memory address or a method of trying each frame without affecting other input, it would make the run easier to develop.

Just be glad it's not Mario Kart Wii. That game cheats. Seriously. The proper response to a 20 second lead is not, "Blue shell up your @$$!" I am looking forward to seeing this game gettin' a beatin'

I was under the impression that once you touch an item box, as it cycles through the different items, the frame that you press Z determines which item you get, and that (except for the glitch in Koopa Troopa Beach) what place you're in determines which items you cycle through (aka no getting Super Shroom in 1st place, highest odds of getting best items when in 8th place, etc.)

That actually sounds like it would make a rather decent playaround. :o

Just dropping in for a quick update. I was stuck on the fourth course of the Mushroom Cup (Kalimari Desert) since this April. I played on and off but was beginning to wonder if I'd made a huge error in choosing Yoshi instead of Toad (Yoshi is slightly heavier and I was falling short of a huge jump at the end of the race). Well, last night I decided a different approach to the jump and.... IT WORKED! So, I've completed the Mushroom Cup and am moving on to the Flower Cup. My time is limited, but I am now pretty motivated to continue. Especially since I've finished test races of the remaining 12 courses, so I don't foresee any huge issues.

This is partially true. Player coordinates and certain control inputs (e.g. control stick position) also influence the item.

That's some great news, I really hope that this run gets completed one day. But you don't have to rush it, take your time to get the best result.

That's great, Weatherton! I'm glad you're making progress on this. I agree with andypanther though; take your time with it, especially since you have real-world commitments to worry about.

Another update. I got a very good start on Toad's Turnpike and then took a break to switch to BizHawk. My .m64 converted over thanks to M64reader.lua. I am now working on some Lua scripts to enable perfect power slides in a variety of situations (edit: before this script, it has been a very manual process to make them frame perfect so this will save time in creating the rest of the movie). I also need to re-find the memory address for actual speed and would like to find the memory address for "next item". If anyone would like to help find memory addresses, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks to adelikat for all his help and encouragement to get me to switch to BizHawk.

If you mean you already knew it in mupen and need to find it again in bizhawk, in both emulators search for a very simple to find memory address, then the offset between the two memory addresses will be the same in both emulators, therefore you can deduce the memory address of actual speed.
