Here's an interesting social experiment on the Internet. There are 15,000 people playing a single game of Pokémon read on this Twitch stream. It seems to work by having a computer read commands typed into the stream and turn those commands into input. There's an FAQ here, and it promises to be updated soon with more technical information. I'm impressed that the stream has enough of a consensus to make progress past the first three gyms in less than three days. I'd like to set up a file with VisualBoyAdvance playing the game in a similarly random way, and I'll post a link here if I manage to do so.

I'm just wondering how much people in the streams actually posted legit input rather than spam smilies. :P

I like how it's a massive struggle to just perform any move or even just to walk in any direction (with or without Red moving like he's utterly drunk). Even after 60 hours of playing I'm surprised the game actually managed to get anywhere.
http://www.youtube.com/Noxxa <dwangoAC> This is a TAS (...). Not suitable for all audiences. May cause undesirable side-effects. May contain emulator abuse. Emulator may be abusive. This product contains glitches known to the state of California to cause egg defects. <Masterjun> I'm just a guy arranging bits in a sequence which could potentially amuse other people looking at these bits <adelikat> In Oregon Trail, I sacrificed my own family to save time. In Star trek, I killed helpless comrades in escape pods to save time. Here, I kill my allies to save time. I think I need help.

Cutting that scrub looks to be impossible at this point. Even with almost everyone spamming start, a, and right, that would only repeatedly toggle the menu which is on the options menu, change some options, and toggle the menu off. There's no way they'll get to the "cut" option, which requires some time, and hit it. I'll check it in a few hours to see them in the same spot.

Truly, xkeeper had to one-up it all and have the twitch tv plays pokemon stream play Tetris instead. The meta is staggering.

I take that back! They somehow managed to cut the scrub, and only within 5 minutes of my post! :O

"New updates are availa"
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

I love this stream. Though a huge problem is the 20s delay of twitch which makes it impossible to really write the correct input. Another thing that will be impossible is the safari game which limits you to 500 steps to make it to the Gold Teeth (for HM04) and HM03. I also managed to catch one of the faster uses of "Cut": http://i.imgur.com/kDftSeQ.gif
Warning: Might glitch to credits I will finish this ACE soon as possible (or will I?)

The way Red goes stuck in one place, goes out, and 5 minutes after is still stuck in the same position after saving 4 times is quite hilarious. EDIT: 30 minutes after, still stuck at the same place.

Oh why did I have to read this page? I have work to do this evening but I can tell it isn't going to get done now... EDIT: just watched a portion where red managed to defeat a trainer's level-20 beedrill with his level-11 rattata. Conclusive proof of how bad the AI is in this game :)

I'm sure they will eventually beat this game. It's just a matter of how many are left. Since obviously the ability to progress is inversely proportional to the number of users playing this game.

Somehow this reminds me of a little experiment I did quite many years on a usenet forum. I wanted to create a collaboration chess game: I set up a chess game, and every day people could suggest moves and vote for moves, and the move with the most votes would then be performed. The next day it would be the same for the "other player". The intent was not to win anything, but to see what kind of game would result from this voting system. (And my purpose was to create a game that was as good as possible, ie. both "players" playing as strongly as possible, via the cooperation of many people.) It went quite well for a while, but unfortunately it ended before even the first game was even half-way through. Many people lost interest, and some other people started kind of "soft-boycotting" the entire project by suggesting and voting for deliberately bad moves in order to make it "more interesting". I didn't want one of the "players" making deliberately bad moves, so at some point I just ended the whole project. Quite a pity, really. I wonder if this idea could work here.

I happened to tune back in just as they passed that horrible part they were stuck at on Route 9. According to one comment, they'd been stuck there for 11 hours. Edit: Calling it now: they're going to get knocked out before they reach the next PokeCenter.

Yup, it seems that way as Red is having to fight off a Geodude with only a Pidgeotto on 2HP. In a desperate situation, he is repeatedly consulting his SS Ticket for wisdom. Just blacked out as I'm typing...

There was a similar experiment in 1999, with Kasparov against the world. Kasparov won, but the world team played very well. They had a team of skilled players recommending moves, and the voters tended to choose good moves because bad players couldn't coordinate on which bad moves to play. I suspect that a democratic run of this game would be much faster and much less funny.

Moves in motion: Link to video The final move is forfeit, since there is no way to prevent the checkmate. Edit: Web based version

that is an amazing idea. But I think that is way too many people and watching the process gets old fast.

There are now >44000 people, and the twitch chat lag is affecting the game. The input stream comes in bursts at this point.

I still say this was the best part.

It's interesting how the "hive mind" works. Everybody was saying that getting Eevee is a bad idea. They go it anyway. Now they are spending countless hours trying to get rid of it... (with too many people sabotaging the plan.)
