Submission Text Full Submission Page
In this tas, Captain Viridian teleports back and forth, and is then smacked into a wall so hard he think he's saved everyone.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: Hourglass r81
  • Settings: allow threading
  • Game version: VVVVVV 2.0
  • Takes damage to save time

Comments

After playing around with text storage a bit (okay, a lot) I found this. So I made a run of it. It's short. Using normal RTA timing, the run is 0:48.07.

Glitches used

Intro skip

I suicide to get out of the introduction level. Normally this is used to skip the second intermission as well, but we never reach that point.

Telejump

Recently discovered by CtrlAltDelicious, telejumping allows you to be catapulted out of a teleporter. Normally used to clip into walls, I use it for a small speed boost when going back to the ship. Except now with the updated version I don't.

Text storage

Exiting the game while you're in a dialog causes the dialog state to carry over. Combine this with level completion, trinket collection and teleporting for weird results. Apparently it also allows you to beat the game really, really fast.

Other comments

No, that's about it, really.

Movie file replaced at the author's request. The new movie is 396 frames faster.

What the hell did I just watch?! That was pretty nuts. When you get a shorter version done, you should just be able to update this submission. I look forward to seeing it!
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. From the submission comments:
Shoutouts and thanks to mklip2001 for arguably being the nicest and most supportive person on the forums.

What did I just watch? It's shorter than the Pokémon Yellow run! Longer than the Maxim run of HoD though :P YES vote.

F!#K?! -------------------- When you told me you had made progress on this game, I thought you got sub-5 minutes (RTA-timing, not sub 1) I agree with Patashu: "What gameplay?" Yes vote.

Crazy. Almost voted meh because it's a cool game and you see nothing of it! :P So little is actual character control compared to intro. Was a yes vote though because it's damned interesting

One question remains: to obsolete or not to obsolete? I'm leading towards no because I don't want to see such a great run disappear.

I love being present at the moment when a speedrunning community breaks a game in half... <3

"No save+quit" would be a fine category, I think.

Obsolete for sure. The run on the site would have to ban S+Q and teleflings to be optimized for its category - it's simply outdated with all these new finds.

Why wouldn't you obsolete if we can build it faster, better, stronger. Let's make this the Six Billion Dollar TAS... or something.

Which is why I lean toward not obsoleting it and instead tagging it "no S+Q," then waiting for someone to make an improved run in that category.
