I ran across another version of DK Country this morning. It's a Snes Competiton cartridge (or rom) that was sent free to members of Nintendo Power many years ago. When you reset the game, you start in the first level imediately. you have 5 minutes and a point counter. Various things get you points. Banana = 1 point DK Barrel = 10 points Bash enemies = Various points. When you die, or complete a level, you see no screens, just either restart the level or move on. The goal? To get as many points as you can in the 5 minutes you are given. Anyone think this type of Race would be good? Bisqwit, i think this question is more directed at you.

I, for one, would be all for this kind of competition. theres a story to this...let me explain. when i was a young lad of only 10 or so years, there was a competition at my local blockbuster. who could get the most points in DKC for snes or Judge Dredd for genesis. after a lot of strategy building / stealing from the other players, it was finally my turn to play. i had been practicing for at least a month to win those free rentals and i thought i was ready. but i DIED on the third level because of a misjudged jump..... i lost by 28 bananas that day. im nearly 19 now.....and im still scarred by my 28 banana incident. i could / should have done so much better.

check out the DKC speedrun thread; Michael Fried, Alex Penev, and myself have already tried runs for this competition cart (without savestates). With savestates everyone can eventually reach the highest possible score, but this may not be true if we base it entirely on skill. Sorry about your loss krieg. :|

I've read somewhere that the final winning score for this competition was at 38xx points. I've tried it with a rom a year ago or so and stopped after I've reached 4000. Maybe I'll try it again and join the competition here..

i think my score was in the low 3000's. maybe high 2900's. that general area.

Then why didn't they send me a copy? In fact, they were selling it in one issue for $35.

Btw. now it's worth over 200$ at ebay.com, no joke! Someone gimme a link to an auction like a year ago... maybe now it's worth over 300$ ;) . So if you've the real cartridge, you could be very proud of it or making easy money.

about a year ago, a thread was made about whether this would be a good game to do a TAS for. But everyone thought that it wasnt very suited for a TAS. But what if we had a competition of our own to see who coud get the absolute highest score? it is true that eventually we will peak a the highest possible score, but it will be fun to see how high that score can get. it would be even cooler if bisqwit would publish the current record along with all the snes TAS's. im taking bets that the highest possible score is arounr 5000 or 6000 i want to wait for the o.k. from bisqwit or a mod before i invest some time in this.

A DKCCC TAS being published would be a good idea, I don't see what the problem would be. For the record, my best score with no save states was 4897, and Penev got 5061 with save states (there are smvs for both of those, I can upload them if anyone needs them). It can probably be a little higher, but nowhere near 6000 is possible, I doubt it can even be improved by over 100.

no one thought mario would get below 5 minutes, but i would bet that 6k is feasible. edit: is there a version of snes9x that has remappable save state buttons? shift +f1 is SO annoying

That was a fun game, I remember it as part of a Blockbuster videogame championship. I even entered it and played it way back then, but I forgot my score. Didn't come anywhere close to winning though :/

I played in the Blockbuster tournament as well, and won the store with a score of 3027, by ten points. Phew! I even got a little piece of paper in a frame with my name on it. I'm more proud of it than I am of my high school diploma!

Have you played this? I would have to vote no on this possibility. I always thought it would be cool to try a run of this game, though. There was already a competition on this under the DKC speedrun thread. It was fairly small though.

We didn't strategise for very long, but we did find some easy tricks. I got around 4800 by continuously entering the Winky room in the 4th (?) level.. the cave one... until time runs out. You get 50pts each time, and you respawn just outside the room again. Michael improved on this strategy by reentering only a certain amount of times, and then finishing the level for the end-of-level bonus (200pts was it?), and got his 4900. The 5061 is done the same way. I don't think 6k is possible either, let alone 5500. Not unless you know of some super-hidden blue/green balloons en route?!
